It really is a treat to have a Half Price Books this far south located at the very end of the South Park Meadows area. It is super convenient for me to pop in especially since there are other big box stores (Sam's), a local barbecue spot next door (Moreno's Barbecue), and even the movie theater (Cinemark) I usually frequent. The selection here is robust and they have a ton of options for everyone including vinyl records, cassettes, VHS, DVDs, paperback and hard back books, a nice long clearance section, and like others have mentioned - nice spots to plop down and hang out/sit for a minute. I come here often to check and browse the vinyl selection. They have a nice set of records that rotate in and out each week. They even have a collectibles box/bin the record area for you to look at that include some super rare records. Their selection ranges from used/previously owned to brand new albums. I have seen some classic rock albums that are reasonably priced. In terms of selling your books or media, I have only been here one time to do so and I came during the week. I had no issues with the offer they gave me as it was fair and the wait for the offer was not long at all! I wasn't even done browsing the store before they had an offer ready for me. Easy parking and super spacious store to come through to and check out. They are tucked away off the side, at the end of the South Park Meadows area, but worth a stop or drop in. read more

I've always liked the Half Price Books chain even though they seem to be dwindling in some areas. Some might consider them an underdog compared to bigger box book stores. But, you know what? I'd rather support the underdog. They've got used & new books, music on various formats, movies on various formats, magazines, kids books, and gifts. They (still) buy & sell. Not much has changed with their business platform and I like it. This location has a lot of offerings & everything is well-organized. Whether you want a banned book, a book on queer history, a cookbook, or a romance novel, they've got something for everyone. Clean store. Friendly staff. read more

This bookshop sits directly next-door to a Sam's Club and Moreno barbecue on the other side. This is one of the larger HP bookstores that has every imaginable book, puzzle, game, comic, CD, DVD and a fairly decent record collection. You can sell your books here, but they usually don't give you much. I would recommend selling your records to End of an Ear or Breakaway Records since they'll give you a better price. There's plenty of locked down kiosks featuring lots of collectible items for that special collection. There's even a clearance section. This store is definitely worth looking through and there's even a few chairs to sit at. 10 photos included for more insight. Plenty of parking. read more

Needing to escape the heat of my apartment, I knew exactly where to go to kill a few hours! I always get lost in rows and nooks at any HPB; sitting on the floor to get to the deepest recesses of the lower shelves. I love this location. It's nearest my house and usually has everything I'm looking for (and everything I didn't know I was looking for). It's also EXTREMELY organized. I've purchased everything from books on serial killers to Beyonce at this location. It's a rarity that they don't have something in store. If they don't, then there's always someone who's more than willing to help you track down what you're looking for. The fact that I can get what I want right then at a price cheaper than Amazon is a huge plus for me! read more

It's laughable what is offered when you try to sell your books and games. I took in 10 paperback and hardback books and a Monopoly game just to see what they would offer. The young lady said, we will take them all for $1.74. How can you make that offer with a straight face ? I just packed up my stuff and left, thanks but no thanks. A donation to Goodwill is more valuable to me than that. read more

Stepping into this place get ready to feel like home with the type calm and welcoming energy that is given to you from the clerk. They are very quick to aid you in whatever you need while you're there looking for a book or just to explore the store. Definitely a judge free zone and you never have to worry about breaking the bank for great book. Prices are fair and they will even reach out to other locations and have the book shipped closer to you so that you don't need to drive so far. Great place overall. read more

I've been to this store 4 times. During my most recent visit (December 2023) they REALLY dropped the ball. First, they forgot to put the disks in the DVD case, when I was checking out. Which meant I had to stop by there on my way from Corpus Christi to DFW, to get the disks. Then, when I opened the ornament box I also purchased, I find it was filled with bubble wrap and plastics, but no ornament. So, I paid $15 for a nearly empty box. Now, since it takes 4 hrs (and more than $15 in gas) to go BACK, I'm not making a special trip. But I am posting a warning to others - check your stuff before you leave the store. read more

I love going to this store to browse around as you never know what you're going to find. I collect vinyl and have found some good finds at Half Price. The SP store I went to for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. I've been to the south Lamar location many times and the SP Meadows location is a lot bigger. I had some books and CD's to sell. I know from past experiences that they don't give a lot of cash for whatever you're selling but I was cleaning out some things that I no longer needed and was happy to get whatever I could and then donate the rest to APA (Austin Pets Alive!). The staff is really friendly and the store is clean. While they were looking at what I had to sell, I browsed around and found an out of print aromatherapy book someone had stolen from me at an event years ago. I was so excited at this discovery and to get another one and it was in great shape. I also found a few records. So they bought about half the CDs I brought for a total of about 30$. So what I had found to purchase, I used the 30$ towards that and spent about 12$. So it was a win win. I got things I was excited about and will use and they got some good things to sell and give a new life to. It's a form of barter and is so much better than trying to sell things at a garage sale. If you're in school past the primary grades, this is a good place to see if they have school books you need or reference books. I say this because I saw some medical books that I used like anatomy and nutrition books as well as yoga and tons of literature types. Each store is different and I think you could call to see if they have a particular one in stock. Happy hunting! read more

Molly greeted me warmly and had the book in hand upon mention of the title and my name. There's a HUGE selection of books, and this store is awesomely laid out! And just for "fun" - I'm frequently an Amazon orderer to reduce shopping errands... I love Half Price Books! Since I have a kid now it's a great place to find board books for cheap. If you are like me and get tired of reading the same books over and over then this is a lifesaver. The kids section is a bit smaller than the south Lamar location, but still good. We have also traded in and sold books here too. This particular location is good for selling according to my husband but it depends on the type of book too. I'll definitely be back here! Really nice, well stocked and tidy bookstore. The prices are fantastic though I didn't see nearly as many used books as at the other location on S Lamar St -- I love browsing bookstores and enjoy finding new things. I did notice that there is not nearly as much of a social sciences selection (sociology was across the store from economics and history was also elsewhere) ... and I didn't find a lot of food history books -- but that could be something that fluctuates. I have a medical condition and cannot wear a mask. I wear a face shield and I've shopped at quite a few stores without an issue. The manager threw me out because I wouldn't wear one, even though the ordinance allows for medical exceptions. I will never set foot in another half price books even after spending probably thousands of dollars there over the years. read more

So, today was my first venture out to a store besides grocery store. Everything seemed OK signs requiring masks, protocols about distancing etc. Well while I was there an older woman in her 70s came in without a mask. She was told she needed a mask or she needed to leave. She proceeded to argue saying that first it was against her religion, then it was too hot, and then it was against her rights. Anyway she and the entire store needs to know that I was exposed to coronavirus right before that. read more

So to be fair the woman at the front who had the skull mask was LOVELY! She was very sweet and helpful. She carried my 2 boxes of books back to the "sell your books" area and when she arrived the man behind the counter said, "wait we aren't doing more than 25 items unless it's an appointment !" She responded with, "yes she has an appointment." He seemed extremely annoyed. Once he was done processing my items (10 minutes later) he offered $5 which was fine I know they don't hold their value. He said I could take anything back from the zero value pile which I did and accidentally knocked over 2 books to the floor on his side of the counter. I apologized profusely and he just stared at me with no response with an annoyed look on his face. It's not hard to be a decent human especially when you are in a retail environment. I get it we all have bad days but come on, COVID sucks enough without people being rude. read more

Incredible customer service!!! Ryan, the manager, is the best manager I've ever dealt with. Olivia and the other staff are all fantastic, too. They're always so sweet and pleasant. I recently went in there without a receipt and they did their best to accommodate me. I even got store credit....after losing my receipt. I was so grateful for them going the extra mile for me. I be lovin ' this place! Being an avid reader and all-around book nerd, I'm in here prolly twice a week! It helps that I live about three minutes away in Onion Creek. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always willing go help. Always seemingly in a good mood, though they get busy at times. The store is clean and inviting, usually with good music playing. And it's very well merchandised, what with all the displays and endcap featured books. Those things have cost me money several times! But speaking of dinero, it's one of the bestest things about HPB. Every 2-3 months I sell back most of the books I buy and read, so I figure I'm doing all my recreational reading for very little money. And we know anyway that, as far as bang for the buck, reading is one of the least expensive forms of entertainment there is! Right? HPB South Park flat out rocks. I love it. One of my Top 3-4 favorite hangouts in all of South Austin. Keep it up, guys! read more

Where to begin, it's called half price books not full price books plus add some more money on top of the final price. I don't know who is pricing their comics but how hard it it to look up a comic on ebay or even comics price guide. It's like they made a price wheel and spun it and what ever it landed on was the final price. Had this been the half price on north Lamar they would have worked with me on the price of this dvd I paid for. The dvd had a price tag of $14.99 and it was from august. They could have discounted it to 7.99 like the other ones but the manager said no it was to new to the store. I didn't know 4 months was too new. Ohh well I will stick to my favorite half price on north lamar. read more

Go in with nothing in particular in mind, leave happy. I find that going into a HPB without a specific book in mind ends with me being happier than when I go looking for something specific. I never seem to be able to find specific books I want even though I feel like they have a good selection. The prices for a used bookstore are just okay. Most of the time I can get a book cheaper via Kindle than I can here, unless the book is on one of their bargain racks. If you prefer reading physical books, it's cheaper than getting a new book somewhere, and sometimes I want the feel of a real book in my hands when I read. I love bookstores in general, so four stars from me. read more

I was doing some exploring after moving into a nearby apartment. Tucked way in the back of Southpark Meadows was this bookstore. I went in, took a look around and saw used video games, vinyl, CDs, magazines, and a mix of new, used, and collectible books. I pulled some books to check reviews and price compare with my Amazon app. Everything that was new or shipped from Amazon was cheaper here! This is the newest location in Southpark Meadows and its all shnazzy ... So the downside to a new location is it filled with new books AND so you will pay more for your book because it does not have many trade ins yet. The customer service was nice..but nothing over the top..but again they are semi new and I need more experiences at this location to fully judge it. I did buy two books and my mom bought four books.. All for the price of $40.00 bucks .. Love it! The store is set up like all the others ....as in with all the different sections and the buy back service. Over all.... Its a nice place! read more

Everyone at this half price books is always friendly. My daughter was throwing a tantrum and one of the friendly staff gave her a balloon to raise her spirits. Olivia is usually the one reading to the children on sundays, she is always so energetic, and makes the books come alive. This is by far the best Half Price Books I've been to. The employees are courteous and helpful, and always say hi when you walk in. I sold some of my items and received a surprisingly great offer. I was sure I would get ripped. Nope. They also have the lowest prices out of all the half price books in Austin. Great clearance, great horror movies, video games, and action figures. They have a great selection. I am on the most wanted list for not picking up items they hold for me, but they are always nice about it. They will hold up to five items for three days. I've gotten hooked on an old TV show, and decided to call HPB to see if they had any DVDs of it. It was 9:25 a.m. on Saturday February 29, and a young man answered. He gave the appropriate greeting, and I simply fell in love with his voice. I asked him if that location had my DVDs, and he politely put me on hold while he went to look. A very short time later, he came back on the line and apologized for not having them. In the next breath, however, he said, "I can have them shipped from another store--two, actually. Would that be okay?" My heart soared and I said yes, please do. He took my information and told me it would take 7 to 10 days. I had forgotten his name, and didn't have the sense to ask or call back. I went to the store today to sell some materials, and I asked a couple of employees if they knew who that could have been. Olivia said that sounded like Dave, but she couldn't be sure--and the schedule for yesterday had already been trashed. I'd love to know the man's identity so I can personally thank him for his help. Had a few minutes to kill before my eye exam at Sam's Club and noticed this Half-Price Books pop-up out of nowhere. I'm very excited we Far-South-Austinites have a HPB now. Walked in and everything was organized and the place has a nice wood smell. They had a good selection of books on clearance for just $1. They tend to overprice the comics here. If you go to the one on Lamar you will find a lot of the same ones for sometimes even less than half the price as the ones here. They have a decent selection of comics and graphic novels, but not a ton of them. The cashiers seem nice and I've never had any issues there. It's nice because it's the only bookstore nearby and the prices are usually pretty acceptable. read more

This is the half price we visit the most. I feel this location has the best children's clearance section. The Lamar store is ok, but it's outside and when you have a wandering toddler, it's not the best location for kids' books. The chesterfield, MO location has coffee and tables... I wish his one did too . Nonetheless, we love half price books. read more

I've gone to this location several times and the staff always goes above and beyond. Cheerful and helpful to the point that my 12 year old commented on how nice the staff is. He's words were "I love going to a place where you can tell the staff works there because they like what they are selling" I came in once looking for a text book and staff personally looked through stock for one and there was a copy. (Apparently it was an ACC only text book hard to come by) For a friends birthday I came looking for a book, that has the same title as a lot of books, and the staff member at the register was very resourceful and although I wasn't sure what book I was looking for that day, I was given tips on how to figure out what book I needed and how half price books can help me find it. Which I did later purchase at this location. Today, 09-09-2017, me and my son came in with previously mentioned text book that I no longer needed and was wanting to sell back and the purchasing staff in the back of the store was extremely personable and explained the process of selling books back. Later after finding a few movies to purchase the cashier made pleasant conversation with me and my son about our selections. Always an exceptional and positive experience and I wanted to that on to the entire staff and truly say thank you! read more

I'm so disappointed with this place. Everything is overpriced!!! I was looking at the PS3 games seeing what games I might buy and low-and-behold I saw skyrim. For a used copy they wanted $29.99. Why would I pay that price for a used game when I could go to Walmart, and get the Legendary edition with more content for $20? On top of that the used movies/tv shows section was overpriced as well as their comic book section. I will stick to the Half Price at 5555 N Lamar to get all my good deals. read more
