These guys were champs at my most recent visit. They continue to buy books during the strange corona crisis, but you need to make an appointment first, and those appointments go quickly. This is the location of the four in Kansas City that you're likeliest to either get an appointment or run into a cancellation during the week. Good selection and helpful staff. read more

I've been a big fan of this place for a while. I've turned books in & gotten $10-15 for 3-4-5 books at a time. So we cleaned out a storage room & ended up with 7 BOXES full of books & decided to drive from Columbia, MO to HPB in Independence & see what we could get. $1. That's it for 7 boxes of books! I understand they need to make a profit & I appreciate that. However, $1 for over 100 books is ridiculous. I they hadn't already unboxed them & mixed them with other books, I would've taken them back & sold them myself. I'm no longer a fan of HPB and won't be making stops there anymore. read more

While I adore the store and all the amazing books and items they have, I was a little saddened by the amount of money they pay when they buy books. I brought in a full bookbag, about a dozen books, the only one in less than perfect condition was a vintage book that looked rough when I bought it a few years ago-and I got a whole $4! Enjoy this store for the great selection to buy but if you're wanting to sell items, go to Prospero's Parkside Books in Blue Springs or Dog Eared Books on Noland Rd. They have never done me wrong in the 15 years I've lived in the area! read more

What a great addition to the neighborhood. I happened to be here for opening day. A long line of eager patrons curled around the side of the shopping center in anticipation of being one of the first 100 people to enter and thus get a free shopping tote. I wondered in once the line died down and was number 106 or something close to it. This store, since it is brand new, is clean, well organized, and stocked. Though much of its selection is "used," it never seems like that. The condition of everything (books, gifts, calendars, books on tape, vinyls, DVDs, comics and anime, etc) is like-new or actually new, but of course marked half or less the retail value. The staff are happy to be there and happy you are there, too. We've had many of our old books for sale on Amazon for awhile now, though when we do actually sell a book via this venue, they take commission, we have to package and ship it, and we don't make much money. In an attempt to get rid of books we no longer need/read (hello grad school text books), we took 7 boxes of books to sell (about 150 books in total). A kind staff member scans each book, gets a suggested price, adds it all up, and tells you what they can give you for the lot. They took every book we offered with the exception of some old, old books with a compromised spine. In short, we made $204 for all our books. Not bad :) So happy this store is part of our landscape now. I've already been there twice in 4 days... I may spend that $204 as quickly as I acquired it! read more

I come here every so often. I usually only look at their alt religion section. I've picked up a few astrology books and some other spiritual/metaphysical books. The prices are definitely better than paying full price! read more

Don't sell books here. Half priced books rips people off big time and they overcharge for what they have in stock. Any person would be better off marketing their used books online instead of getting ripped off by this business. They're good at being nice though! read more

Any book person will love this place. Especially love the collection of old books. Great sales.

A fun place for any book lover to explore. I could spend hours there, every day. You never know what you're going to find. The only slightly frustrating part (and I understand that they have to make a profit) I do wish they'd be a little more generous when you bring in books to sell. read more

I love to read, and I hate spending money, so I guess you could say that I was pretty excited for a new place to shop for used books. Say what you will (everyone else does) but after a long day of stressful adult things like work and college and bills, my favorite way to relax is reading the books I loved as a kid, like Nancy Drew mysteries. Their kids section is awesome, and I love that one whole section, floor to ceiling, is clearance, which means the books are only a dollar. Normal price books are more expensive than I'm used to -- most thrift stores sell books for around 75 cents or so, and if you ask me, a used, 50-year-old hardback shouldn't cost very much at all -- but the books here are literally half the publisher's price, so at least it's easy to calculate. I tried selling some stuff (a box full of paperbacks and another box full of DVDs, some still wrapped in plastic) and I got only $14 for the lot. I literally spent more money than that per DVD and there were a good 30 or so in there, so that was pretty disappointing. Besides books and DVDs, they also sell CDs and all sorts of computer games and software, and service runs anywhere from enthusiastic to bored and indifferent. read more

Check other sources and sell elsewhere. You'll save time and have more money and less frustration. I brought in 2 totes full of college textbooks and was told 1 hour wait which I understood they got busy it was around 2:30-2:45pm. I proceeded to ask one employee if it was ok to step outside if I needed to smoke and he said it was fine. So my friend and I looked around the store for a little while then saw a new employee working on the stack. I spoke with the new person and asked if it would be ok if I could run to the car and grab a drink out of my car the time was around 4pm at this point and I was thirsty. At first this person said it was ok before another employee said it was store policy that I had to stay in the building. This contradicts the first and second person so I asked my friend if he could run and get it for me since this place apparently doesn't allow you to even step outside the building. This was my first problem I waited almost 2 hours and I can't even step outside or at the very least get a drink. Then my second problem was the time and payout. At this point it was almost 5pm and I was beyond ready to leave and I almost told them to forget about it and leave with my book I have things to do. Then right before I did I was called to collect the offer. And my face must of said everything because after this person gave me the horrible $80 offer I asked "for everything?" and I was told yes. So I waited almost 3 hours, couldn't leave, and got a ridiculous lowball offer for 2 full totes of textbooks most in good shape. But I wasn't about to leave empty handed from this place after everything so I took back one of my college books worth $50 on BookScouter and walked away with a measly $71. Needless to say you are better off selling elsewhere, selling local, or even throwing away than getting shafted by this place. I will never buy or sell here again after this poor of an experience and will not accept any payment to remove this review. read more
