My wife and I love to stop by and spend some time perusing through the different genres and seeing what has come in recently for our favorite authors... and all at half price (or less) of the original pricing. Even cooler, if you have books lying around or even old DVDs... bring them. They will buy them from you and then maybe the books you pick out will have a place on the shelf at home! Then, to add insult to injury, the clerk proceeds to tell you that he's going to sell the Gamecube for $100. If I could give a negative star rating, trust and believe, I would. That place is a joke. What a scam!! Books there are priced OK but selection bad. Also they bring you in with opportunity to sell them used books but then when you lug the books in they give you very little. Honestly, I brought in a box full of books that included best sellers in good condition and got less than a dime for each book. They lure you in with this opportunity, give you almost nothing for each book and, I expect, assume you will not want to drag the books back home. If they were honest they would make it clear in their instructions for the book buying that sellers should expect very little for the books they bring it. If I had known how little I was going to get I would not have bothered lugging them in. My plan had been to just use the money to buy more books there but I felt so cheated that I just left. read more

I visited half price books on 8/5 with a collection of books to trade for an offer. They gave me an offer, I accepted, and I left the store. Within an hour I received a call from Chris (the assistant manager) letting me know they found a $2.00 bill in one of the books! This was in one of my young son's books and one of his prized possessions! It would have been so easy for them to keep it and my son to never know where his $2 bill went. I am very grateful for the honesty and integrity this business exemplifies. I did go back to the store to retrieve my son's $2.00 bill and even offered Chris two normal $1.00 bills as a thank you, but he would not take my money. This place is very easy to miss, but my Mom found them several years ago and brought them to my attention. It's a pretty sizable store and they have a pretty eclectic mix of items. They don't have a huge selection of music, but it's decent enough to warrant walk throughs. They have a pretty wide array of items that are kitsch, and I've picked up a large amount of items that I've really enjoyed. They don't have them any longer, but I've picked up about a dozen of their dolls that are historical figures such as Einstein, Ghanaian, and a Van Gogh where one ear is removable (I was sold immediately). The thing I enjoy most is that they have a huge amount of books that I just don't see when I go to book chains like B&N. Since people can bring their old books to exchange for credit, the shelves change frequently and you really never know what you'll see. I will also say that I went to an employee asking if they had a specific book I was looking for and they were very good about searching for the book, seeing that they currently didn't have a copy, and having it brought over from another store. I particularly appreciated it because i didn't even ask. The employee just asked if I'd like them to do that. This book wasn't anything expensive, so this was done for a book that was under $10. That's the kind of thing that will make me a loyal customer every time. read more

I've been going here for the past 4 years and it's great for the entire family! The staff is so friendly and willing to help. Recently, I took my daughter to their reading hour event and it was really fun for us! I'm so glad they host events like this. I dragged two heavy boxes in during a pouring rain ( two trips) and was told I should wait instead of coming back later. After wandering around store for 45 minutes, they paged me. The books were beautiful coffee table hardbacks, some travel books and some dvds. The girl said "we can give you a dollar." A DOLLAR! She explained that they would be recycled, meaning thrown away. My library has been closed since COVID, so no book sales to donate to. There was no way I was dragging them back to my car and I think she knew it. How insulting! read more

Having been in grad school for the past 18 months, I was excited to buy some "real" books to read that had nothing to do with leadership. Half Price Books to the rescue! I was able to purchase about 8 books and a DVD set for under $25! For some cheap reads, make sure you check out the clearance section in the back of the store where many books are in the $1 - $3 range. This was perfect for me as I wasn't looking for any specific title, just books that interested me. There was a large selection of books on just about every subject you could imagine (and then some). The staff was extremely helpful in locating specific books and subjects. Once I get through this bunch of books, I look forward to a return trip! read more

How is this showing up in Murreysville and not Monroeville? The map tells you to go about two to three miles further than you need to. Let me say that this is a great place to come to find a book that you need to replace. One that was damaged, one that was wore out by reading it too much, or say something like one that you lent out to someone and never got back. The pricing is great here, the name is apt. This is a place to come when you have a ton of time to waste in a day. Much like a library, you can browse and read while sitting here. Eventually coming across the one book you just have to have. I suggest heading to the back of the store where the clearance section sits. I definitely found a couple of hard cover books in great condition for a buck. I even got a bonus, a bookmark in one of them. It was Goosebumps, I know you are all jealous now. read more

Lying scumbags!!! The last time I traded some items in and before I got the usual "okay buddy, these aren't stolen" I walked around the store and waited...waited 25 minutes on 4 items (three PS2 games and 1 DVD). When I went up to hear my total, knowing my games weren't cheap (older RPG titles), I was told $3. Confused and angered, I asked to know how much each of my items were worth. Was told that wasn't possible for my 1 item I brought in. Guess they thought I was a thief and idiot, I told them I had 4 items and my other 3 items happened to be in another pile, to the side. The employee said "oh" and just looked at me. I demanded my items back and wanted to speak to a manager because they were basically trying to rip me off. The employee continues to just look at me so I left. I will NEVER go into this location again to trade items in. Lucky for me, as I'm sure the employees found out, those games were worth a good amount. Sold them on eBay for a total in the three digits! I'm reviewing as a buyer and not a seller. I've not sold to Half Price Books. First off, I like there are are visible staff on the floor that are available for help. I feel like many places, in general, under-staff the floor. The staff here are VERY HELPFUL. I inquired to a staff-member about a topic I am interested in, and they engaged another co-worker, who then engaged another, who all helped me find resources and gave me encouragement on my project. The facility is large and they have a decent selection. The clearance section was a bit intimidating because I couldn't see a particular ordering for those books. As used bookstores go, this Half Price Books is a great option. It is clean and well organized (which I can't say about the McKnight Road location). There are tons of different sections. I especially love the mass market paperback section, where I can find affordable copies of classics. The staff are very helpful. The kid's section is pretty big and has a snack and reading time once a month. I don't feel like the trade-in value is quite what I would expect; however, it's nice to take a bag of books, movies, and records in and walk out with something for everyone in our family. This is definitely our go-to used bookstore in Pittsburgh. read more

This just might be heaven for you if you love books! I come here when I'm searching for specific books or just browsing. The staff is extremely helpful in helping you to locate a book if you are looking for something specific. Their products range from CDs to journals to children's books to magazines... even collectables! There truly is something here for everyone. Also, they have a very nice and constantly updated clearance section in the back near the bathrooms. Additionally, they will buy books off of you. While you may not get much, they typically take everything and its nice to get a little something for items that you would donate anyway. They have alot of books in the subjects I like and I have often found hard-to-find stuff at great prices.....I have friends who shop another store and buy the latest fiction stuff and they give them to me after they read them and I trade them in...they have always added up my stuff super fast and gave me a fair trade-in or cash offer....I also really like the memorabilia and toys, games and autographed items they have for sale......it's a neat store......albums, books, games, toys.....gift ideas.....the staff is always super nice.....huge selection of VHS and DVD's ......I just love the place. read more

There are 4 locations in Pittsburgh. Monroeville is my favorite! The selection is great there are tons of genres to choose from. It's very clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. If you choose to sell your items this is a secondhand store with secondhand items, they do not pay much for what they buy, but it's enough to pick something better off the shelf. The only time I got any amount of money for my items are if its a popular title and they go through it faster than others. This is my favorite place to go read more

This is my favorite bookstore since Borders closed. They have a great selection of books in every genre. The only problem with this store is I came in to sell 6 boxes of books. We only got $38 for all of the books when we probably had $200+ worth of books. read more

Half Price Books serves a certain purpose, and in a township like Monroeville, where there are no other bookstores, it is essential that this place stay in business. Most of the books are remaindered or bestsellers, but there are books of quality to be found here in and among the junk. Most of the staff is helpful and friendly, and they are paid poorly too, so they deserve a little slack. The records, CDs, DVDs and such are ordinary as well, mainly whitebread kind of stuff. Today my son and I went in looking for Fahrenheit 451 and a helpful guy found copies for us. On the other hand, one of them (a paperback) wasn't priced. The friendly woman at the counter called to her two co-workers, a slightly older gray haired ponytailed guy, who was talking to another worker, saying she needed a price on it. They ignored her (it was clear they saw her) and she kept holding the book in their direction, but they refused to price the book. We looked through the bin of so-called "collectible" LPs meantime ($100 for a worn copy of The White Album, seriously? $75 for a shitty Beck 10-inch?) and at some of the rare books ($1000 for a signed GW Bush book, really? $1500 for Well's First Men on the Moon, which usually auctions for half that, seriously?) but STILL the ponytailed guy ignored the nice young woman who was getting slightly awkward and embarrassed about it. Finally she priced it on her own at $1.99 as the ponytailed guy walked behind her without talking to her. I thought he was rude and setting a bad example, and if he's the manager, or at least the guy who prices stuff, he was being a bad manager. And that will set the tone for the whole place if they're not careful. read more

I've been a HPB customer for about 20 years, until tonight. I brought 19 boxes of albums, 1600 albums total, to your Monroeville PA store. Miller, the store manager, and another employee sorted through the boxes for about 45 minutes. Long story short, the HPB store offered me a grand total of $15 for 1600 albums. That is .009 cents per album. Miller gave me the same story HPB always gives to sellers...supply and demand... and that me that she was only going to sell about 60 of the albums. But, she said 10 of the 60 albums would go for $1 a piece, and the rest would go for more. So if the remaining 50 sold for $5 a piece, that's $250 for the store. I could have walked out with my 1600 albums, but lugging them there was a huge pain. So I got ripped off and will never go to your store again. read more

I went in to sell CD's and AFTER they went through my items and wasted 15 minutes they told me I need a photo ID which I do not have. Then she tried to be all nice and tell me sorry for wasting my time and had the rudest voice when she said, "Ohhh you only have a permit?" I honestly feel so talked down to and hurt because I work in retail, and I would never treat a customer like that. If I need a photo ID it's not that hard to use your words and tell me you need my ID before you waste my time! Another experience I had at the same store is one time I wanted to ask an employee a question to see if they had a book I needed for class; however, that employee was extremely rude to me. I walked over to the counter that came out from the wall and my foot was an inch over where the counter ended and she said, "Oh I'm going to need you to take a step back. This is an employee area." I wasn't in the 'employee' area. It's not like I was trying to get behind the counter, my big toe was just sitting on the tape on the ground, so she decided to try and assert her power over me because she is a worker and I am a customer; however, as a customer I was not respected. Just because my big toe is on the line does not mean you need to tell me to take a single step back, it's not that big of a deal. read more
