I brought in a large group of books, all hardcover, quite a diverse group of subject matter, all in great condition. I was informed they would pay me $1.25 for all my books. $1.25?? Really?? I spent more than that in gas just to drive to your store. Based on other reviews here, seems like other folks are making out like bandits when they are offered $7 or $10 for their hauls. I declined their offered and bluntly told them that I would use more of my time and effort to take them over to my favorite mom-and-pop, non-chain thrift store and give them away for free so that those folks could make some money off of them, part of which will actually go toward helping people who are overcoming drug addiction and other similar situations. I will never again bother to bring anything to sell to any Half Price Books store. read more

Half price books Roseville is located a half mile from the mall and I have ALWAYS had a good encounter there - hence finally breaking down to write a review. The staff has always been lovely. Yes, you're never going to make a tremendous amount of money on your used books, but if you're Kon Mari'ing (that's the verb now - right ?) your bookshelves. It's a easy way to let go of what doesn't bring you joy (bye bye sharepoint 2010 book) and make a few bucks to go next door to Dunn Brothers and buy a cup of coffee. I am not a huge book nerd , so I can't tell you much more about selection - but I'll gladly pass up B&N for Half Price any day. There is parking but Fairview (the road it is on) is pretty busy - so be careful with cross traffic during rush hours! read more

We brought in 159 CDs, and they offered $3 for ALL OF THEM. Yep, THREE dollars total. What an insulting experience. I understand CDs are not popular anymore but while waiting we saw several in our collection they were selling in the store for $4 and 5 dollars individually. Folk, jazz, rock - mix of genres. Employee spent 30 mins reviewing them & claimed it was 120 CDs, when corrected he said he may have "missed some" . read more

I stopped by this Half Price Books location after shopping at the mall. It's conveniently located across the street of the Rosedale mall! I found a lot of great discounted books! I spent $10 on 5 books! That's a good deal. There is a wide selection of genres and media's! You could wide a LARGE selection of DVD's. I was pleasantly surprised actually! This store is neat and organized. There are new and used items to choose from here. I recently cleaned out my bookcase and had a bunch of Time Life hard cover books for home repair and do-it-yourself books. I was recently a personnel cut at work due to Covid so I thought that I could make a few bucks trading them in so others could love them like i did. They were in great shape, some hardly opened along with a bunch of cook books and the famous Top Secret Recipes books. During Covid it is hard to get an appointment to have them look at your book and they limit you to 2 medium sized boxes. I usually donate but I thought these books had some value. They only start to take appointments when they open on Friday morning until the next week's schedule is full, which I am told takes a couple hours to fill up. It didn't take them long to look through my books and let me know what they could give me. The 2 medium sized boxes with hard cover books in mint condition on home improvement and cook books were only worth a whopping $2! Not really worth the trip. We did enjoy Portillo's nearby for lunch though! Books are a dying breed. You would be better at donating them to save the hassle of trying to get through the phone to schedule a time for them to look at your books. The people were nice and helpful but each quote stared with "It isn't much but I can offer..." If i knew that, I would have just donated locally. I drove up to Roseville because I could get through the phone at the Apple Valley location. read more

It was time to clear our bookshelf filled with hundreds of books. We didn't care too much about making money and just wanted to get rid of them. So where to go? Half Priced Books. We brought our obnoxious collection of textbooks, novels, and cookbooks there last weekend. A staff member noted that it would take about twenty minutes to look through all the books, before offering a bid for them. While it took about 45 minutes (and plenty of pestering) before they offered a bid, we got close to $70 for everything. It was a lot more than expected, and we're just happy someone took them off our hands. As for the store itself, it's pretty large with used books of all kinds. And like any other bookstore, it's organized by type. I wouldn't come here looking for the New York Times' Best Sellers, though. It's more of a place where you might find something interesting that catches your eye. There's also a decent music and skimpy video game section. I would consider returning to get some books off my hands, but I'm open to other places. read more

I must admit, I am a far bigger fan of the HPB in Highland, but this one is decent if in the area. Nice selection of the boxed cards. I'm not that original when it comes to giving out birthday cards, thank you's etc. My family always recognizes my cards because the ones they receive for each occasion looks like the one they previously received. Oh well. Hit and miss selection of books. Sometimes they have a really decent selection and sometimes its seriously sparce, but they have no control over what they get in. I've found some pretty good titles in the DVD and movie section that were rare. Excellent clearance section on the back wall by the restrooms. Children's section and gift kits around the holidays make for nice gifts. Check out staff is pretty much always friendly. The ones stocking the shelves seem to want to avoid answering a question a fair amount of the time, but if you track em down, they will help. read more

Never fail to find something awesome here. My favorite area is the kids section because I have been buying books for my friend's kids and the other kids in my life. We've been bringing the books we're done with to Half Price Books for a few years now, I have 3 kids so every now and then they go through their books and whatever they get for their old books they get to buy a new (used) book or 2. But the last time we brought items in we only got $5 for a filled Target bag, which included about 15 gently used kids books, about 4 gently used adult books and 3 current, purchased brand new and only read once adult books. We were all very disappointed this time around, since it wasn't enough for each of my kids to each get a book. But I went with 3 stars rather than 2 because my kids really enjoy their summer reading program. We will return for their summer reading program but we'll probably just donate our old books to the school from now on. read more

Don't sell books here. The prices they give you are ridiculously low for how much they turn around and sell for. Amazon is way better. It's not a bad place to come buy books but I'm doing my rating on the selling aspect. This place is bull. I once turned in like 30 books and got 7 bones for it. Really? Granted I was happy to have all of it off my hands but afterwards I had some serious sellers remorse. This is their newest location, maybe a year old. It doesn't have the funkiness of the original, like many original places do and yes the staff at the original are clearly "book people", you don't get that vibe here. I like that its on one level, very bright, and pretty spacious. The aisles are pretty roomy. Plenty of inventory, and I tend to come to this location for the major sales for browsing. It has good size handy mens and womens rest rooms. There is a convenient Dunn Bros next door to skim through your new buys.It's actually my favorite location for aesthetics alone, and no stairs, but I only come here if I know I'll be in Roseville. read more

OMG I CANNOT TELL YOU GUYS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS STORE! and specifically this location everyone is so helpful everyone is so kind and they always go out of their way to make sure that I am comfortable (always so welcoming as soon as i enter and when i leave). They are so helpful in finding what I'm looking for. I have been going to HPB for YEARS! But this location is DEFIANTLY, by far, my favorite. I currently am in school, work full time and run a business part time. Time is so important to me and I do not like waisting it. Time is money. So... I called in the other day looking for some books because Amazon would have taken too long to get shipped out, and would have cost more to ship it in time for when I needed these books. What happened was, this girl named Emily went out of her way, spent over 10 minutes on the phone with me, to search up titles find locations where I can pick them up, or there was the option where I get them shipped to me or shipped to the nearest half-price books location (free shipping from local store to local store, really cheap shipping from out of state locations) I was blown away at Emily's customer service skills, patience, her kindness, and her calmness throughout the entire conversation I had with her. I don't know what else to say but thank you HPB for always having my back. And good work Emily, there should be more people like you in the world. You are FANTASTIC at what you do. read more

I just discovered their discount LP's section. 50 cents for Frank Sinatra. Always a go. They really have a great selection, and great prices. Clearance section always has an odd mix, but good prices. The workers seem a bit sullen, but maybe they're the introverted, reading type. Honestly, I wouldn't pay full price for books again. I hope none of my friends pen the great American novel, because I will buy it here. read more

The morning meetings at Half Price Books must go something like this: "Okay folks, remember to make customers wait for a half an hour while you assess their books, then give them $3 no matter what they bring in." Seriously. What a horrible waste of time. It doesn't matter how pristine your books are - lots of mine were brand new, never read. It doesn't matter if you bring in one box or fifty books at a time - they will give you three dollars. So be like me, and the next time you have books to get rid of, donate them somewhere that will appreciate them instead of letting these shysters resell your book for $11.99 after giving you all of .20 for it. For bibliophiles on a budget! This is where you can find my husband & I on a Saturday night. We really enjoy the laid back atmosphere and have always found the staff to be extremely knowledgeable. I went there one Sunday morning in July to pick up some collectible books for my husband's birthday and not only found the books, but an informative and encouraging staff worker that helped me figure out what I was looking for. While it's nice that they have their "clearance" wall, it's unorganized and very time consuming to browse through if you decide you want to spend the hour or more it'll take you to get through it all. What's rather more annoying, though, is when sales counter staff are standing there talking about personal life matters in front of a customer, and between ringing up a sale and such other things with a customer, they continue on their private conversation. Come one, people! That's rude behavior and poor customer service! However, when I come out this way again, I will likely stop in to browse because, in general, I really like HPB. I love half priced books, because you'll never know what you'll find. Of course finding something specific can be very hard too. Especially if you have that one book, that quite doesn't fit into a genre. I find it best just to roam around in a zig zag pattern in the store and find random books/movies/CDs/toys that pique your interest. That's the best way to do it. read more

Stopped in to sell some of my childhood and got a pretty good amount of money! Great for just getting rid of stuff that you know someone else could enjoy (and you know you won't be anymore). The staff here is all sweet as can be! They are all super nice and one particularly dashing chap helped me bring in my obscene pile of junk. I browsed around but I wanted too many things to decide. I was surprised at the great selection and the random stuff I didn't expect (Japanese embroidery book=heck yes). Once a favorite place to spend my spare hours, I have stepped my last steps through their doors. I have often gone to buy books and movies, and at times to sell used books and movies. The last time I went, they offered almost nothing for the items I brought to sell - as if they expected me to donate most of the items so they could get 100% profit off of me twice (when I bought the items, and again after "selling" them back). never expected all of my money back, but $13 for 31 items.... all of which they well sell for an average of $10/each??? And that wasn't the end of the issue that day - I bought a few items that day and paid with a credit card. Later I found that they charged my credit card twice for the same purchase. I've called to correct the issue, but now going on two weeks since the purchase - I've yet to see that double charge refunded after they said it would only be a couple of days. read more

Incredible! I stay nearby a lot and I thought I would give Half-Priced Books a chance. I went in with low expectations and came out pleasantly surprised with a box full of books! I normally shop at the bookstore in my hometown, and books there average to be about $15-$25. At HPB, I spent no more than $10 on each book. The place was organized and clean, the staff was friendly, and it was not too busy. I will definitely be visiting again. read more

I am with Amy R. on this. The HPB in the highland area is a better store, but this is decent. Don't think that you are going to get much in terms of money out of bringing books in, but if you are looking to get a book on the cheap for a book club or for kids, this company is perfect. I haven't found some of the hidden gems I have had success with at the highland location, but overall decent. read more

So I'm a teacher. I always look for cheap books to buy my kids since they are usually destroyed and/or stolen. Most of the time I find them at library sales. But this week, I needed 11 copies of The Secret Life of Bees. This place had way more than I needed. I don't even know how they got that many, but it was amazing. And they were all the same edition. Hello, amazingness. I was able to also find an ACT prep book for $2 and a couple popular books in their clearance aisle for cheap. The thing I like about HPB is that they have a lot of textbooks and learning materials. I was able to find a teacher's guide for teaching English language learners that looks pretty awesome. There were more books, but I still need to eat this week. The only reason I don't give it five stars is because they offer a 10% discount for being a teacher and a 10% discount for selling to them. For some reason, the employees all think this is like the best deal ever. It always makes me smile inside. read more

I am totally unimpressed by the rude customer service. I was in this store on Feb. 21 and was looking at a book, but was late for a meeting and asked them if they would hold the book until I came back later, which they did. Upon my return, the cashier was waiting on a customer, and interrupted her to ask if I had a question. I told him about the book, and he said he was waiting on a customer and would be with me next, but then he yelled at me, "I NEED THE SPACE!!!!!" When I asked him what "I need the space meant, he yelled it again, "I NEED THE SPACE!!!!" What he was "trying to say" was that the customer ahead of me wanted to use the credit card swipper. Really dude. You couldn't have just asked me to move so she could use the swipper? I reported the incident to customer service, who forwarded my comments to the district manager. By Feb. 24 I forgot about the incident and returned to the store to see if they still had my book on hold, since I walked out before on the rude cashier. I was approached by the manager who told me that "I am no longer welcome at his store, please leave." While I did yell at the rude cashier on Tuesday, he accused me of cussing at him. Maybe I did, maybe I didn't. I was angry. Apparently, Half Price Books does NOT care about quality customer service, if they ban a customer for complaining about their rudeness. I DO NOT tolerate rudeness in anyway, and will forever boycott ALL Half Price Books stores. I remember a few years ago I returned some books to Half Price Books in Maplewood, and the cashier sneered, "You know, this ISN'T a library!" Not only that, but they offer very little money when they buy your books. You are better off selling your books, magazines, CD's etc. on Amazon.com and get the price that you want from them.
