I am sad to say this business is operated by dishonest and unethical people. I signed up for a course that was subsequently cancelled due to Covid. Many months later, when it was clear the course would not be rescheduled, I emailed and called the business contacts several times requesting a refund. I was ignored every time. I am out almost $50.00 and will NEVER use this business again. They also own Northern Comfort Quilts in Saco which primarily provides quilting services. I would not trust them. I am sad to submit such a negative report since most people I encounter in the quilting world are honest and reputable. I don't want anyone else scammed by these people. read more

I was greeted when I walked in to the store. I was immediately drawn to all of the jelly rolls and charm packs! Alas, there were NO prices on anything. The woman that was working seemed very nice and knowledgeable, however couldn't split her time between customers. I patiently waited after filling a baggie with scraps (for $1, I was very excited about that), and FINALLY finding the hand sewing needles that I needed and originally went in for, I was admiring the fat quarters. I'm a very impulsive shopper, I had 2 or 3 in my little pile, and again, no prices. No shop attendant to help. I went to the counter to pay... and I waited and I waited and I waited. Finally, I just left. I'll go again as I'm hoping that they carry more English paper piecing supplies. But if this is the way that it's going to be, I'll drive to Windham and Westbrook. read more

The only reason I am giving 1 star is because I can't give 0 stars. I dropped off a sweatshirt that was my best friends before he passed away. They were supposed to sew it into a teddy bear for me. I didn't hear anything for 2 weeks so I called just to ask for a timeframe. The woman was very rude and couldn't give any timeframe. I called another week and a half later and once again was very rude and told me just come get the sweatshirt and she will not be doing anything for me because she is sick of me calling. I am new to sewing and am also a beginning quilter visiting Kennebunkport, ME. I stopped by Saco, and visited the Half Square Quilt Shop to take a look at the fabric selections. I found this shop to have friendly and professional staff. They had a wide selection of fabric, including some of the Kaffe Fassett Fabric , however not the line I preferred. For those who wanted their quilt completed with a Longarm, they had this equipment as well. They even sell their scrap fabric at a very reasonable $1/sandwich baggie, and you select your own scraps, as well as stuff it to the gills as well. I left with 3. I would definitely return to this shop, the next time I am visiting this area. read more

Mediocre quilting quality and spectacularly rude service. I moved to the area hoping to make Half Square my go-to for longarm quilting. Now it's my never-go-to. My first quilt came back with folds in the batting - a huge quality error. It also was covered with tangled long threads that are taking forever for me to trim. In short, she handed me a mess. The owner openly argues with her own staff and - see for yourself - scorns her customers on her own Facebook page. The fabric selection is pretty good, but things aren't priced. Ordered something online in February that was supposed to ship approximately 60 days later. I have been calling for months and asking where the order was. As of 10 days prior, there was excuses that parts did not come in. I finally called Amex and canceled. I then called the owner and told her to cancel the order. She said "oh but it just came in"! I said that I did not want it and reversed the charge. She said you cannot do that with a pre-order. I informed her that after 7 months it was a moot point. She was not very nice and after this length of time, you would think she would understand that I was not interested any more. Sad experience. read more

Purchased fabric for a wedding quilt - it was pricy but did not want to order online. After finishing the quilt, I stopped by and left the quilt, backing and batting and received an estimated price to machine quilt and timeline when it would be finished. I called to inquire if the quilt was done and was told that the quilting machine had broken and a part had been ordered. So I waited some more, called again and then finally went into the shop. The machine had been fixed but my quilt was way down in the pile to be machine quilted so I asked for it back. It was still in the same shopping bag, untouched for months and the lady had the nerve to say I owed her for the batting. I showed her my receipt for the batting from another store before she would let me leave. If you are in a hurry - it might be a good idea to go elsewhere. read more

I have had one quilt long armed by Pauline and I couldn't be happier with the results. The stitching work was impeccable, and she had the quilt done and shipped back to me pretty quickly conspiring she had several other customer's work in-line ahead of mine to quilt. I have also bought several hundreds of dollars worth of fabric and notions from HSQS, all of which have proven to be of good quality and fair pricing. Pauline and I have become pretty close friends for well over a year now, and I must say, she is one of the hardest working women that I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. She is passionate about her quilting and her business and tries to really make her customers happy. However, I personally have seen several blatant attempts to damage her reputation online by a few miserable people who are not happy unless they are spreading their misery and lies to others. The best advice I could give to potential customers would be to judge for yourself based on your own experience. Pauline has a multitude of satisfied customers, but most satisfied customers do not think to provide good reviews online. read more

I'm furious. So in late October 2017, I got a job at Half Square Quilt Shop. I did tasks, such as helping her move furniture to have her office repainted, helping her cut fabric for samples, I helped her sew a quilt, organize the shelves, and especially, I helped her with her website through Wix. I created a page of thumbnails of logos of fabric brands that would link to the pages which would eventually link to a list of those products (took 2 long calls with customer service to figure out how to do that). She even wanted me to work from home with no proms of compensation. I didn't. (That should have been a red flag). I worked maybe a total of 15-20 hours. One morning out of the blue, she called to lay me off. She went from being happy that there was someone to help her, because she was dealing with an illness. Then 2 days after Halloween she called because she, "doesn't need me anymore," because the foot traffic in the store was dying down, but she said she would calculate the hours and send me a check (Must have been like $140 before tax?). I waited A MONTH. On December 2nd, my BF and I went to Half Square. We politely waited for the other customers to leave, and I, trying to be friendly and not accusatory, I asked if she had mailed out my check yet. She said no, and that she wasn't going to, because I apparently made, "too many mistakes," and may pay was going to cover those mistakes, mistakes that she had never mentioned before. Even if I did make these supposed mistakes, THAT IS ILLEGAL. She also accused me of lying about being able to sew??? I told her to her face that if she doesn't pay me, it's theft of services, he response was, "I think you should leave now." So I file a case with the Maine Department of Labor just before Christmas. I filled out all of the paperwork. My case was denied. The woman handling my case says the Pauline McGrath told her THAT I NEVER WORKED THERE. I only had a job interview. And mysteriously, all the time card on her register have disappeared! I even emailed the woman handling my case the confirmation email from Wix from when I was invited as a contributor on her website. Why would I have admin privileges like that if only interviewed with her??? But she said that there was nothing she can do without the time cards. My only choice was to sue her in a Civil Case, but to hire a lawyer and to pay the $50 court fee, it would cost me more than the money she owes me. So she gets away with calling me a liar, lying to the government, and stealing my money. The only thing I can do is leave her a nasty review on Yelp I guess. In conclusion, don't give this woman your business. (She is terrible at running her business anyway. She doesn't even inventory her products). read more
