We live in a very sad era of a severe lack of notions and fabric stores, especially locally owned shops that carry quality supplies. Z Fabrics is such a godsend in an already under supplied part of the country. I love stopping in to chat with Lee, who is always working on some magnificent knitted project, they have an excellent selection of yarns, and everything you need to keep on sewing! I've been particularly impressed with the quality of ribbons they stock, 100% cotton double faced satin ribbon that isn't entirely made of plastic is hard to find! my daughter and i are big crochet and crafting enthusiasts, in Portland for the weekend. Walked into the shop 7 minutes before closing and literally was kicked out. I would maybe understand if this were a clothing boutique where you need to try things on, or if the salesperson told us he had couldnt ring anything after5, but we were shown the door even tho we acknowledged we would leave by 5. Too bad because i can do a LOT of craft shopping in 7 minutes And yarn and kits and other tools can really add up to a nice Maybe close an hour earlier if it's too exhausting to stay open till your advertised time of 5. While traveling I like to visit quilt/fabric stores local to the area I'm visiting. I was very disappointed with Z Fabrics. I was the only customer in the store but was not greeted nor acknowledged when I entered. The 2 employees working there were too busy socializing with each other to say anything to me. Also their selection of fabric is limited with very little variety. This is definitely a store that I would bypass in future trips to Portland, ME. read more

The staff here is super friendly and helpful and they have a fabulous selection of fabrics and yarns for all tastes and styles. I am particularly fond of the Japanese linens that are carried here. I wouldn't sew or knit at all, if I had to go to the mall for materials. Here, you get professional help and guidance, you get left alone if that's what you need, and you get an awesome amount of compelling fabric and yarn and notions and tools. Great selection of modern fabrics! I went in this weekend to pick up some fat quarters to make masks. I was specifically looking for cute and fun prints. I found a kitten print, lion print, and chemistry lab equipment print for myself. And my husband picked out anchors and pretzels. Hey, if we have to wear masks they might as well be fun, right? I made a couple round trips to find a parking place based on prior reviews. While I would agree there are some beautiful fabrics here, I found the choices somewhat limiting. But most disappointing was the service. I waited till all other patrons in the shop had been served, and then asked the staff if they could help me find a complimentary print to the one I intended to purchase. The response was "your ability to look is as good as mine." Somehow I would have hoped for something different since I was the only customer in the store. How hard would it have been to spend a couple minutes with me to find a complimentary Moda fabric? I have made my first and last stop at Z fabrics. read more

Would give Z Fabrics another star if I could! I have been ordering fabric from them to make face masks while we're collectively quarantining and my experience has been phenomenal. I am super excited about the quality of the fabric I have received and am very impressed with their prompt shipping. Their website is very user friendly and makes it easy to find what you're looking for in their wide selection of prints and materials. I have also been in the store before the world got weird and found it to be well organized and those working there to be friendly and helpful. I came here initially when I was making my first quilt, and foolishly did not get enough of the red I was using. I came back with a scrap of the fabric to match it and get more, and they were out of the bolt I had bought from. The woman working here took my scrap of fabric, researched it, and found the exact match for me. This is to say that the customer service is above and beyond what I would expect from someone who had never seen me before - they are super nice every time I go in and great with any questions I have. The fabric selection is not as big as one of the big-box stores, but it's all chosen well and they have a lot of really charming prints. This is a great place to pick up fabric for any kind of quilting project and for many other projects as well, or just to browse for fun graphic design ideas. Those pictures are misleading because they have moved into a new location. The location didn't seem quite as nice but the selection was good for a small store. I was excited they had some of the etsy esque patterns rather than the big names. I asked for a specific one and I was told where to look and that they probably had it. I never did find it which was disappointing but I found a few others along with some nice fabrics. It's a great place to stop in to avoid the bigger box stores but it wasn't an out of this world small store. read more

Not the cheapest fabric, but much easier to find what you need than a trip to JoAnn. I found a few awesome shirting fabrics, though only got one on this trip. I was also very pleasantly surprised to see that they carry some of the more contemporary patterns, including Colette patterns (and I snagged the Negroni one since I've been chomping at the bit for it). Stopped by recently curious about working with knits. Having no prior experience with the them, the woman working showed me the differ types of knits, explained their uses, and the differences in fibers. She worked with to find a pattern, and explained on their machine the different types of stitches I should use. She even suggested other resources outside of the shop. Loved this place - it has a little bit of everything for the avid sewer. No, there aren't wools or other fabrics for office or outer wear but there are plenty of other fabrics here to enjoy.
