The kitchen is open to guests which I found amazing. When I arrived I was hungry but not for a full meal so I toasted a bagel and sat outside on the porch to eat it and listen to the birds. One caveat about the Rooster Room is the shower. You need to get the shower curtain arranged before you take a shower to avoid water on the floor. Otherwise, it was a great stay and the breakfast was wonderful, as well. It's definitely not your ordinary lodging.

The rooms were straight out of a romantic and cozy place and time, even though newly remodeled this treasure truly felt alive with history. Over breakfast I found myself daydreaming about getting married to my husband all over again and having the wedding in this classic overnight country hotel. The grounds were very well kept, complete with a beautiful pond, historic barn, and a deer grazing in the field out the window as we ate are breakfast at the huge ol' farm table. Or hostess was also super accommodating with a special gluten free, paleo breakfast for me. I look forward to staying here again, and sinking back into that chair on the wrap around porch as the sun gets ready to set, and the wildflowers sway in the mountain breeze.

Debra, the…read moreowner/innkeeper, has expanded her flock of goats and now is mastering the art of goat cheese and milk-making, selling her creative chevre combinations at local farmers' markets and offering advice to would-be artisan farmers (or wannabes) along with her signature ranch house breakfasts (think fresh eggs, hash browns, melon, sausage, and excellent dark rich coffee). She's also a fountain of knowledge and great conversationalist, and her elegant ranch home quickly feels familiar within the first few minutes of arrival (once you open the gate and bounce along the gravel driveway to the barnside parking). This time, I decided to get creative and took a sunrise hike before breakfast to the summit of nearby Council Mountain (8126 ft.) in the Payette National Forest. Admittedly, it was a bit of an adventure, with fallen Ponderosa pines (the good Samaritans have chainsaws in their trucks up here), black bear cubs, a great grey owl, kestrels, and a herd of free-ranging cattle, and I didn't get back until 11:30 am, so my breakfast was an early lunch. But the chance to see the mountains from an exquisitely rugged vantage point made the 12-mile morning trek worth the effort. The food and company that Debra provided after were most welcome. You don't actually need to do a hike like that to have a good stay at the Elkhorn (or bring along French wine to drink on the patio while watching the lightning and rains come in at night). You could just hang out for a while and soak in the hip ranchhouse atmosphere while goats, horses, sheep, mules, chickens, dogs, and other creatures wander about. It's definitely a pioneering sort of place - a 21st century version of a Western American classic, with WiFi and goat cheese included.

The lodge is historic and there is a lot of cool history. There are a lot of cool pictures off the lodge I days past hanging on the walls which gives it a "Shining" ambiance. Getting in the tubs first thing in the morning and watching the steam come off the lake while soaking and relaxing is a wonderful start to the day. Overall I highly recommend the experience.

If you visited the hotel prior to the pandemic, please be advised it is a completely new and improved experience. The building and grounds have a unique and storied past, dating back to the mid-1800s when the first permanent structures were built there. Then it fell into precipitous disrepair for many years until the last several owners began putting a great deal of money into bringing the resort back to its former glory. The building is a big, sprawling and drafty old place. If you are looking for a painstakingly restored Williamsburg style country inn, this place isn't for you. There are creaky floors, uneven surfaces, and yes... cobwebs here and there. But the wonderful new owners of the property are dedicated to making it shine. Please do visit the The Lodge at Hot Lake Springs. Ask questions, wander from room to room. Explore the grounds. Read Wikipedia about the lodge, and track down some of the cable ghost hunting programs on YouTube that feature the place. Enjoy soaking in the pools. Rooms were great, the owner is a little Korean lady that makes the stay special, and it is only a couple of minutes to walk either way to a convenience store or a restaurant at the truck stop. Much more personal and pleasant than the strictly commercial places in Baker or LaGrande. I suggest you step back in time for an evening.

This place, in contrast has made lemonaid out of lemons so to speak. The room was great, as always. The staff was great, as always. They no longer have a breakfast buffet.... most motels have stopped offering it while not reducing their room rates. The Eagle's view came up with an interesting solution. You fill out a menu of what you want in the morning and when you'll show up and hot coffee and all the goodies you ordered are waiting when you get there. Being a big eater I was concerned that the portions would be skimpy. But the gal working the b'fast really heaped on the food. It was great! This motel has always been the best lodging in town (by far). Always stay here when we're in town.

There is a Safeway around 6 miles away that we did get some items to heat up and have in the condo. Seating was ample for our family. We would have liked bigger beds for our teenage boys but we made it work fine. The surrounding area is lovely and a few miles away is beautiful Wallowa Lake State Park which we stopped at on our way out of town. We would stay here again.
