Not any more, not only has the prices increased 75% in about 7 years, but payment has to be made up front. If you don't have the full amount up front, absolutely nothing will be done. The cheapest casket they have is almost $2000 and it looks like an elaborate zip-lock container that has been spray-painted. The owner/director of the place has got to be the coldest, most inflexible woman in the world. When we asked about making payments she almost yelled " NO". After that she seemed irritated that we were there bothering her. In the end we got basically nothing for way to much money. This place has gone from a wonderful caring place for the grieving to a cold building that's only goal is to separate vulnerable people from their money. I hope this place closes so no more people will be ripped off.

She did not have a preneed form for cremation but had a burial plot at Golden Oaks Cemetery. She buried my Dad in 92 in a ground burial and Caniff Funeral Home did the funeral. Marcia Caniff Davis made all the arrangements for my Mom with my brother and sister, ignoring my calls and left me out completely. That was my Mom too and I had a right to give her a proper funeral. Mother wanted pink roses, a pink dress, and a pink liner in her casket so her hair would look white, and she was so beautiful. I was called at 5:32pm and told by Pat Caniff "Your Mom will have no funeral, no visitation and is on the way to the crematorium and has probably already been burned." I had to find her body at a Portsmouth Crematorium and see her in a garage, lying on a plywood crate, unembalmed and an odor, mouth wide open, and a baby burning in another oven. I took her roses and read her Psalms and told her how much I loved her and said goodbye. Caniff did not even offer to drive me to Portsmouth. I have never cired so hard in all my life! It is a nightmare I will never forget. Caniff's argument is they are not a crematorium, but Caniff made all the arrangements and had all the forms signed and drove her body to Portsmouth! Caniff should have trusted but verified the forms because the family and coroner told Marcia about a family dispute. My brother, Roger, lied and signed as Executor and my sister, Janet Gail signed as his witness. When the ashes were returned to Caniff they buried them in her burial plot next to my Dad and did not call and invite us. This is so wrong and I pray I can stop this from ever happening to another family. I want the entire community to know about this tragedy. May God forgive them for how they treated my Mom and me. My father passed away on the 10th of December and although we knew it was near, we did not have…read moreenough time to shop for funeral homes. I'm sure this is a common story. My father used Steen Funeral Home years ago for his mother so we called them first. I was able to go by and talk to them in order to shop around. Little did we know we would need help so soon. I had done some internet research a few months earlier so I knew that a "direct cremation" should only cost about $1500 for everything we wanted. When I was talking with them I asked why they were so much higher than what I thought it should be. They explained that "they were the best" and it costs a lot to maintain the facilities they have. In my mind, I wrote them off the list right then. What I requested was direct transportation to and from the crematory, placing of the obituary I wrote, and completion of minor paperwork, and no more. For this they quoted about $4200. When he died the next morning, we had no choice but to proceed with Steen. I did complain that their price did not represent a fair market value for what they were specifically providing us. They asked me what would be fair and I replied $1200. They said they would let me know. I left feeling better about it. Two days later when they were handing me my father, they handed me an invoice for $4400. They had added $200 for "cleaning and disinfecting prior to cremation" to the bill. I was livid, but I paid the full amount and walked out. I later asked friends about their experiences and found that this type of service is usually about $2000 in the Ashland area. The notion of "full blown" funerals with all the bells and whistles is rapidly changing and some funeral homes are adapting to a different demand. Older funeral homes seem to hold on to the traditional ideas and charge the same base rate no matter what they actually provide. I generally do not agree with government regulation, but sometimes I wonder if taking advantage of the bereaved should be against the law.

I first did a review in Feb 2023 when my mom passed. This time I am writing a review after my…read morefather died. I have had 2 very different experiences with Ferrell chambers funeral home. Both of them incredible. I first met Tyler, and lance when my mom died. Back then they had no ideal who I was​. When i called this time around, they knew excatly who i was. That in itself was amazing. I wouldnt consider myself as memorable to most but to some. It was so nice and comfortable to feel like i was talking to family i hadnt seen in years. I dealt with lance first and explain my dad was on comfort care and to be expecting a call from the hospital. He was on it and even remmebered my dad was a vet. Saying he had most of the info he would need from my moms passing. Just bring the dd214 when we come in to meet. That he be there when we needed him. I went into the hospital with the knowledge my dad would be in great hands. After my father passed i called the funeral home and got the answering service who transferred me to tyler. I was very emotionally distraught over my father going to the morgue. It wasnt a place i wanted my dad to be. So i called tyler and asked him if he could please be ready to recieve my dad as he had passed. He was very accommodating to what my need where. I also asked if he could please call me and let me know when he was picked up. This is the part that is so great. I recieve a call within 30 mins of leaving the hospital for them to arrange my father for transfer. (They had to clean him up and remove all the ivs and such). Tyler called me to tell me that he had him and my dad only went thur the morgue. He never stayed in it. Now i know that doesnt happen for everyone and im sorry for that. But if tyler and lance can make it happen they will. They go the extra mile to make the family feel as though they are family. When my sister and i went in the next day everything was waiting for us and we only needed a couple things done before it was all said and done. The cremation was done as quickly as could be since you need a death permit. They played my dads favorite songs while he was being cremated. My father was never alone. That brought me comfort. And if you are ever worried about bring kids to the funeral home dont be. I took my 5 yr old with me to pick up my dad ashes and they made it a happy experience for her. She wasnt creeped out or uncomfortable at all. So she got to be a part of it too since we didnt have a service. We are currently still waiting on the death certificate and some other things but they call and check in once a week. That so nice. I dont have to hound them for information. I know that they will get to me as quick as they can. So if you are looking for a real family friendly funeral home this is the place. Lance and tyler will take care of you. This i promise 100%. The experience was stressful and painful. Chris in particular was an extremely CALMING influence during this time. The service was short, 5-7pm, but effective. Everything they did for us was above and beyond, but Chris was a master at remaining calm and helping us through differences of opinion on how to go about Celebrating my brothers life.
