There's a takeout in the back of this place. If anyone has McDonalds on their mind, try Hall's Supermarket first. They serve homemade french fries/potato wedges and chicken tenders. And the food is truly real. Don't worry about the price. For a comparable meal at McDonalds, Halls Supermarket will be less. And the drink selection is the best in town. Mexican Coca-Cola, Mr.Pibb, various hard to find drinks, all here. The environment is friendly with a mix of locals and transplants. The outside may look discreet but what counts is whats on the inside! And inside there is wholesome and goodness. Some place warm 'n fuzzy and somewhere to stick your head in. Huge fan of Hall's! We make sure to make a stop or even go on a mini trip to stop by for their chicken salad, found in their deli section in the back. The chicken salad is one of the best I've had - it's shredded chicken that dressed well, and perfect on a Martin's cocktail roll; if you're lucky, you'll find Tom's Hot Fries in the chip aisle, and this makes a great pairing! There's not a ton of grocers in Colonial Beach, so this Great Value dubbed Hall's is a definite welcome!! It's dated, an old fashioned type store, but it's typically well-stocked. The prepared food department, especially the fried chicken is excellent. The bakery is with every calorie! As I was checking out, I saw the dessert case and tried the strawberry shortcake! It was fantastic! That alone will bring customers back again and again! The produce department is plentiful and often offers local fruits and veggies. We used to come here just to get the Gibbles cheese puffs, but they are no longer available there... bummer! Another item you may seek, but may elude you, is Northern Neck Ginger Ale! I was just passing through the area and had to stop in. I wish I had a little market like this near me! It was like a step back in time...an old-fashioned, family owned little store. I loved every part of it! They had an adorable little salad bar that was so clean and everything looked so fresh. They had everything you would want from a regular grocery store just on a slightly smaller scale. I was pleasantly surprised to find a little place in the back where you could order numerous different fried foods. They had Mac & cheese, green beans, potato wedges, regular and hot fried chicken wings, chicken nuggets, etc. Wow!!! I tried the chicken wings and potato wedges...both were soooo crispy! Delicious!! Colonial beach basically has two grocery stores. Food Lion and Halls. I wanted to see what this store had to offer. I was surprised by walking in and noticed there was a few aisles and two employees working. What caught my eye was the meat department and the homemade pot pie's. Some items were a little pricier then Food Lion, but I really liked the small town feel with this store. I would come back to buy certain items like meats and veggies, but for other items I'd rather go to food lion where it's probably a little cheaper or on sale. Clean and stocked market. The dell home made desserts. If you are lucky enough to be at the store and they are selling the strawberry shortcake GET IT. We finished one and had to go back for another. Every time I am home visiting my mother, I always want to visit Hall's. It's a great small town (independent) grocery store. You can tell it's family run, and not just by the vintage interior. In house butcher, homemade family deli items, (we like their broccoli salad), local seafood like crab and oysters, are just standard there. Surprises this visit was their own line of spice mixes, a much better selection of wines and dried pasta than FL, Old Virginia Ham and slab pork belly and fishing bait! We've been shopping with the Hall family for many years (40). They provided great service for my mother and father-in-law upon retirement to the area and now the tradition continues. My husband loves Emilys' coconut custard pie, all are excellent, then you have Aprils' chicken and beef pot pie's, yum, so good! If you don't see an item you need, just ask and they'll gladly get product if available. Well, Well, Well! What a great country supermarket! It is one of my favorite places to shop since my move to Westmoreland County! Em and the staff are great! Courteous and helpful. I really appreciate their meat department where everything is so FRESH and well stocked! Of course, it helps the prices are palatable to the pockeybook!!! LOLs There are many times that I can find better deals at Hall's than I can find at Food Lion!!! And.... I have to say I have a pet peeve about the cashiers putting groceries in my cart after I have spent my money. Everything in the produce section was in some stage of decay. The onions were rotting, the avocados were overly ripe, and the green onions were wilted, the leaf lettuce was on it's way to liquifying. It was horrifying, no wonder the avocados were 89 cents, no one would pay more for them. You'd think in what is largely a farming community they would take more pride in their produce section. After seeing that I left the store without buying anything, I just assumed everything else in the store was rancid. Go to the Food Lion in King George or Colonial Beach, it might be a farther drive, but at least you know you won't be risking food poisoning. read more
