It's on the north side which tends to have a more refined feel to it. Rent a car (it's very cheap these days), so you can easily explore all around the island from here.

BAD COCKROACH INFESTATION!!…read more We stayed here for 5 nights in Aug 2025 and unfortunately our experience was ruined by a persistent roach infestation inside our unit. On the very first night, we killed six live roaches indoors. Over the next two days, we encountered several more inside--including one crawling near my foot while we were eating at the kitchen table--which terrified my children. We also saw many on the patio, along with ants along the wall near the sliding doors. We were unable to use the patio or keep the doors open for fresh air. Management sent pest control to spray, but the cockroach sightings continued. They offered less than 10% partial compensation, but it didn't make up for losing the ability to relax or feel comfortable in the unit for the majority of our stay. We understand Hawaii has tropical insects, but this went far beyond the occasional sighting. This was a recurring and disruptive issue that affected our enjoyment of the vacation. Management said it's "normal" for Hawaii. Well, I've been coming to Hawaii for decades and I can confidently say this is a bad infestation because I have never before experienced anything like this. Especially at resort (supposedly) of this caliber and price point. And management's response was slow and unsatisfactory. I do NOT recommend this resort. Proceed with caution--especially if considering a ground-level unit.

Then, just days before we were arriving, I was informed that we would NOT have access to the two golf carts as agreed and that there was construction on an abutting lot. They suggested we could rent bikes to get around the property (they had some, not enough for our group). I didn't want to spend more money so we made do by walking. The construction next door meant a giant fence along the property line which totally blocked our view of the ocean. They should have offered us a different property for the week. I would certainly not use them again.

The view of the waterfall alone will leave you breathless, but each of the bedrooms are completely isolated from the rest of the house and the kitchen/dining area is about 25 yards from the rest of the rooms with an amazing 260 degree view of the river and waterfall. At night the sounds of the Hawaiian Hilo jungle will lull you to sleep. The frogs are so loud at night you will swear you are the last people on earth. Hilo is a short walk and you can avoid seeing anyone for days if that's your thing. We loved our time on the Big Island, but loved our stay at The Falls at Reeds Island even better.

This time I stayed there only for the weekend to relax and recharge batteries. My unit was very clean and had updated kitchen and bathroom. The host left for me fresh fruit and flowers, so sweet of her. She was easily to reach to answer any questions or recommend attractions. She also showed me her coca trees and orchard so hopefully next time I'll be able to taste her homemade chocolate. I will definitely stay there next time I'm in Hilo.
