I'm not super into musicals so honestly this was a good experience for me, but not something I'd go see again. However, the story and script are interesting and I can see how broadway fans are into this. The theater is just beautiful and seats were comfortable enough, but I found it incredibly cold! This may differ depending on your seat but I was in the Orchestra L section shivering up a storm in a winter coat. Again, the actors were excellent and had great voices, but the comedy just wasn't my cup of tea. I know tons of people are into musicals though and if that's your passion, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It's far from the normal musical, original music and concept with a unique twist on a typical show. Fun experience but I think I'm now good on seeing Hamilton!

My takeaways: 1 - Lin-Manuel Miranda has written a beautiful musical, perfectly capturing a flawed man pursuing what he saw as a righteous path with, at times, questionable motivations. The rhyme and score, executed by an insanely talented cast, take you on the emotional ups and downs of life - without your awareness of joining the journey. 2 - Everyone longs for significance and belonging. 3 - The world is wide enough for diversity of opinion. We do not have to figuratively kill other's ideas, or destroy/demean our opponents, to elevate ourselves or achieve political security. 4 - History is a valuable teacher, if we choose to listen and learn.

Just my playbill no photos were allowed during the performance. Duh.

Ok so much hype about this musical play. Was it good? Yes! Could you go on in life without seeing it? Absolutely. First of all, here are my negatives... it's long! And it's filled with singing. Anddd as much US History and Government that I have learned in my life, I know for a fact that George Washington (1st President George Washington) was never ever known to be a chubby black man with a fro! With that said, I enjoyed the show. I was happy that although this was musical, the "singing" was split up with rap, ballads, hip hop and chorus. It jogged my memory with all the US history! My favorite characters were Thomas Jefferson, another black man in the play LOL, Hamilton of course, and King George! Great part about all of this is that its a true story! And I have to ask! What ever happened to the 3rd sister Peggy? LOL

IT'S 3 1/2 hours you'll never get back. Didnt find is funny or enjoyable... honestly i found the play as painful as the seating. WE Were in the second roll but managed to sit behind people much taller.. so struggle to see. But we saw and heard enough to know this did not live up to the hype. Then the person next to me was a huge giant who took half my space. I was praying for it to just END. THE ONLY PART WE ENJOYED WAS KING GEORGE. He was the only one who we found talented. Thank God we did pay 800 to see this in New York last spring. 500 was enough to waste. Ohhhh how i wish we'd kept that 500 but beat 800 each. Ac not good either.

After months of entering the Hamilton lottery, I finally won! I was able to score 2 tickets for $10 each. Before you buy they warn the seats may not be together, and may be limited view. Well, we ended up being able to sit together but the limited view came from being in the 2nd row because being too close to the stage we weren't able to see the bottom half of people during scenes where they stood further back. This was not a deal-breaker for me since the tickets were only $10 and the show was stupendous!!! The CIBC theater is really gorgeous and they offer beverages/snacks at concessions, as well as a coat check. I was extremely entertained by the show itself and the cast was amazing too. I would definitely go see it again if I got the chance.

Hamilton is a 5-star American musical, but the performance in Chicago fell a bit below the high standards of the original cast ... or the oversized expectations that comes with purchasing exorbitant tickets to the most-hyped show of our lifetime. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius. Hamilton is one of the best pieces of writing and lyrics I've ever experienced. His ability to pack so many words and rhymes into every minute of the musical is stunning ... and breathtaking. Some of the Chicago cast struggled with the lyrics and clear pronunciation while others were truly outstanding. The CIBC setting is not great although it is historic. The experience getting in/out of the narrow lobby wasn't fun while those sitting on the edges complained of obstructed views of some parts of the show. Hamilton qualifies as a real 5-star show even though the Chicago version had a couple hiccups that lowers it's rank to just 4 stars.

Believe the hype this show was all that and more.

This is the best musical I've ever seen. We loved every minute of the show. The performance was flawless. The way they tell the story through some rap and hip hop was engaging and fun. Since the show we've been listening to the sound track over and over. I only wished it was longer or we could go again. Lin-Manuel is a master story teller and song writer, kudos to him for the years he worked to make it happen. His hard work paid off, go see this one if you love musicals.

One of the best (if not the best) musical i've even seen! The one thing I really wanted for my birthday and we happened to be in Chicago during it's run. Not only was the show perfection in all areas, but the theater was amazing with wonderful acoustics. I understand the hype. It is so much deserved. The acting and singing was incredible, not only by the lead roles, but the entire cast. Bringing history to the present in a fun and entertaining way made for the perfect evening. This is a must see!!!

Don't Miss the Chance to See Hamilton: An American Musical Hamilton: An American Musical is a Tony, Grammy and Pulitzer Prize award winning musical about the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Inspired by the 2004 biography "Alexander Hamilton" by historian Ron Chernow, Lin-Manuel Miranda created a transformative new musical that redefined Broadway blending hip hop, R&B, pop, and soul into traditional-style lyrics and music. The Chicago run at the historic Majestic/CIBC Theatre was the first Hamilton performance to premier outside of New York in September/October 2016. It is a must see musical. The music, choreography and staging are brilliant. Since it is in an old theater, there are many locations where a view of the stage may be partially obstructed. Our right orchestra seats, row N 16-18 -20 and row T seats 18-20 had different views although they were only 6 rows apart. Since the seats at row T were by the wall of the theater and under an overhang, we could not see the far right hand side of the stage or the top of the theater at all. Since we had read reviews, we were prepared that this might happen. Our daughter's seats were more "centered" in row N and thus were less obstructed. Sound quality was perfect though and "Hamilton" was incredible. We also walked up into a box and to the front of the mezzanine to check out other views as well. Note: We ate at the Italian Village a block away and took advantage of $12 valet parking. No lines to wait for our car and missed the traffic in front of the theater on the way back to our hotel.

Make sure you get a chance to see this while it's in Chicago! Such an amazing story and the production is so good! You can see the amount of work going in to this performance. The songs are amazing and the cast is all so talented. I want to go back and watch it again! The theater is small and cozy. There may be some seats with slight obstructions such as an overhang from the balcony but nothing really serious. It's nice that they sell alcohol at the venue as well. Be weary of using the bathroom during intermission as the lines can be very long.

We loved King George - he was the best ever. George Washington was fabulous as well. Interesting production albeit a bit long. We noticed people leaving half an hour before it ended. The music was great - the rap, r and b, even a small amount of classical. Not sure it was worth the expense though, understanding they gross over $100 million annually. Good experience overall.

Omgoodness...this stageplay was phenomenal!!!! The sounds, cast, singing, what more!!!!. This theater was exceptional.....

    Grant A.

I finally saw it!! It was different going to a showing with slightly different actors and singers because I had listened to the soundtrack a few times over the last couple of years. Seeing the complete show is definitely an experience and makes the musical numbers easier to understand contextually within history. My grams has slight mobility issues and a member of the staff was very helpful in helping us navigate to our seats, which I'm appreciative of. We were seated in the balcony. It's noteworthy how popular the production is even after it's been on stage for a few years.

What should I wear to this show? My family is planning on wearing nice jeans and a nicer shirt; I just wanted to make sure that wasn't too casual. Thanks!

I like its ornate décor, the stadium style seats set-up which offers good stage view, the acoustics, and the overall aesthetics of this venue which makes it an ideal place to watch live events. On my recent (late June 2026) visit to see The Human League, Soft Cell, and Alison Moyet for the Generations tour, overall, I had a good experience. There were couple of issues that we had such as lack of cool air circulation inside the auditorium (it was hot and sweaty) and a couple of people standing throughout the show to dance, blatantly blocking other peoples' view and not caring about being inconsiderate and uncourteous to people behind them to which the theatre ushers had no problem with it. Otherwise, I have not had issues at this venue. So, 4.5 stars but rounded up to five. I look forward to going back here.

When we first arrived, upon checking our tickets, our tickets wouldn't scan/verify. The usher was getting frustrated with us for this, and made us go to the ticket booth to get our physical tickets. We showed the person the tickets on our phone, and she printed them out for us -- after several rounds of confusion on her part. She was so soft spoken (in a noisy theatre entrance) that it led to much confusion. After this, we had to "cut" back into the entrance line (the security guard was helpful here) and we got thru the gates, finally. Then this usher/ticket checker who scanned our tickets (the 2nd time) was literally yelling at us on which direction to go (not a yelling as in being loud, but yelling like we were stupid). I go the way he yells at me because he won't stop yelling at me to go the direction he points me in -- which is the wrong direction. We had orchestra seats and were headed there, but this usher/ticket checker was yelling at us to go up the stairs. Fine, maybe I'm wrong. We get upstairs, and the 2nd usher again points us in the wrong direction to go further upstairs. This is again incorrect. We are flustered and confused, and not sure what is going on. We finally reach the 3rd usher at the top of the stairs, and he finally points us in the correct direction. The ushers here (Sans the 3rd one) were incompetent and rude.

Somehow, I learned about a children's production presented through their educational wing. I'm not sure if their education & engagement was this strong in years past or perhaps I simply wasn't dialed into their offerings, but that's definitely changing now. We went to see Splish Splash. This was a 50 minute long story about a blue heron and friends who are seeking to repair the moon after it fell into Lake Michigan. There were songs, there was play, and it was highly interactive. The kids--fellow "sailors", along with three of the cast members--learned a song to sing along at various parts of the show. There were several times when the kids were invited onto the "stage" (it was in one of their lab/classroom spaces, so there wasn't a raised stage) to help or participate. It was so well done, and kept the kids engaged. I really loved how this experience was designed. Upon arrival we were checked in and pointed to one of the classroom spaces. I was surprised because I wasn't sure how actors could be safe there, but it was actually a room for the kids to color and read books or play with toys and stuff before we were taken into the room where the performance took place. I've only seen something that was meant to keep kids busy like that before showtime is at Filament Theatre, and we've gone to kids shows at two or three other theaters by now. It was a great touch. This production was specifically geared toward children aged 0-5, which is atypical and felt so special that it was written with the littlest theatergoers. One of the important pre-show reminders was for adults, reminding us that it's a no-shush zone! I'm so excited that one of the most important theaters in the city, and the oldest non-profit theater still in operation in Chicago, is so committed to developing young audiences in an exciting way and meeting them where they're at. I was reminded of the same issues I mentioned in my earlier review, issues that persist after almost a decade. Like many theatres, they make you wait outside (in this case, in the cold), while they get the theatre ready. Maybe they don't want to pay for the workers to be there for too long beforehand? It makes for a crappy experience. You are then funneled inside while security guards bark orders at you, even when all you're doing is trying to find your way inside in a polite manner. Luckily, the guard in our line was nice enough and joked around with the kids. The lobby is tiny, unlike the other major theatres downtown, so that is something to be aware of. There's really zero room to breathe, and the intermission bathroom line snakes up from the basement into the bar line. Luckily, I got there earlier on, but that's a bad experience. The bathrooms aren't that nice, sadly, and they could use extra care. There are a lot of stalls that don't lock, don't have purse hooks attached anymore, etc. Worse yet, the attendants are on a power trip, though they're not quite as mean as others in similar theatres, and the line moves quickly. I just don't appreciate them yelling "up against the wall!" It's a bit much. The orchestra seats were pretty comfortable and even have good sight lines for short people! From what I saw, the snacks weren't as expensive as one might imagine, though not cheap. Frustratingly, there is no public wifi here. What year is it?

Great production at this beautiful theater! Everything seemed organized and there were concessions…read moreavailable and a decent amount of intermission time- much needed to use the women's restroom. We decided to go with the last minute as we were in town and even though the seats were in the balcony section, we still very much enjoyed the production. Sound and lighting were great. Seats were comfortable. I saw a wide range of clothing attire but it was nice to dress up since the theater is so classy. Security was seamless.

Sharing a letter that I wrote to Broadway in Chicago and the Cadillac Theatre for which I never…read morereceived a response: I am writing to share a concern regarding audience management during performances at your theatre (Cadillac). I attended The Phantom of the Opera last night and unfortunately, the experience was significantly disrupted by a visibly intoxicated family seated nearby. They spoke throughout the performance and, most notably, sang very loudly during the final song--directly over the performer during what is meant to be a pinnacle and emotionally powerful moment of the production. This behavior was disruptive and diminished the experience for many audience members in the surrounding area. This was not an isolated incident. Last year, while attending Moulin Rouge at your theatre, I experienced a similar situation involving two belligerent and intoxicated audience members who talked, sang, danced, and cried audibly through much of Act I and part of Act II before finally being escorted out. I paid $250 for my ticket last night to see one of my favorite musicals, and it is deeply disappointing to have that experience compromised by behavior that should be unacceptable in a professional theatre setting. Audience etiquette is essential to preserving the integrity of live performance, and more proactive intervention would go a long way in protecting both patrons and performers. I want to emphasize that the theatre itself is beautiful, and the productions you host are outstanding. It is precisely because of the quality of your programming that I feel compelled to raise this concern. I strongly encourage you to consider stronger audience management practices to ensure that future performances can be enjoyed as intended.
