The new 3 Card Monte show was a great way to see different magic acts in one venue. Dennis Watkins always puts on a great show and this was a great addition to his repertoire. I would highly going to the Magic Parlour for a time full of amazement and laughter.

I had a great time at the Magic Parlor. A group of us went to a late night show & the experience was truly magical. The MC for the night was fantastic & provided us some historical context, which I enjoyed. The drinks were great, I loved the on theme names. I was called on the stage as well as participated in a couple up close up magic tricks. I don't know how they did it but it had me side eyeing my group.

Two words.... MIND BLOWING!! Dennis is an amazing showman. Incredible card tricks, close-up, and mental magic that left you amazed. Fastest ninety minutes of entertainment I've ever experienced! And the VIP Room was spectacular- I highly recommend it!

Mind blowing, must see event! When I was initially pitched going to a magic show, I wasn't sold. Dennis changed my mind almost immediately. His personality, crowd work and sheer skill captivated us the entire show. 90 minutes has never flown by so fast! If you're looking for an event to cap off your night, check out the Magic Parlour.

I love magic shows, but this one goes above and beyond anything I've seen. He combines some close-up magic tricks with astounding mentalist activities that shock and amaze even the greatest skeptics. It was shocking to see what he does with the most random inputs. Truly a mind-boggling experience that will leave you scratching your head for a very long time.

Amazing experience! Magician Dennis Watkins is a great showman, and you'll enjoy every second of it. Check-in is hard to find. You'll need to find Potter's Bar, which you'll have to go up a small set of stairs, go past the giant lobby, and go left. We originally walked the wrong direction (don't go past the restrooms or Starbucks, you're going the wrong way). Then we saw a sign that said to check-in at the lobby, but that was somewhere a floor below, and we got lost. Just ask for directions. Sign up at the guy with the tablet, and you'll get some cute little tickets and two red flowers if you paid for VIP. Check Groupon and you might be able to get the VIP tickets for normal pricing. I highly recommend the VIP package. Everyone gets to participate in the show. It's not that hard, and he doesn't pick on you. You'll probably just guess a number or have a yes/no question. Don't worry, it's not like a comedy show where you want to avoid being the joke. Everyone had a blast, and so will you. He said the show is going to change sometime in September, so make sure to see the show before then. He didn't explain how it would change, so just go now.

It's intimate, it's interactive, it's fun, it's magical, it's highly recommended. Because there isn't a large group almost everyone will participate. Don't worry they're gentle picking on you. These are card, dice, blade, rings and head reading tricks that will blow your mind. There's a sense wonder in all these since your so close you can't believe your eyes. Dennis Watkins is not only the magician but also your host extraordinaire!

Amazing! Went here for an event and I have to say I am so surprised by how good this show was. I love how charismatic Dennis was and he really cracked some good jokes there. I love how he tied everything together and the show just flows very well. I recommend this to anyone who wants a good time and the parlour itself is very neat as well. Love the bar area and the show area is also very nice. we got food there and it was pretty yummy as well. If you are around, definitely go check out!

Why is this experience not recommended more in Chicago?! Dennis Watkins was a phenomenal magician. His stage presence and engagement of the crowd had everyone on the edge of their seat, and blown away by the close-up magic occurring right before your eyes. His show was appropriate for all ages. I appreciated the recommended dress code, as it made the experience feel a little more elevated (however, I doubt they are going to turn anyone away if wearing casual clothes). Your entrance ticket includes a drink ticket to be redeemed at the bar. Lila, one of the house staff, was welcoming and helped ensure we were seated comfortably. Phone are not allowed during the performance, so no evidence of the amazing show, but I would definitely return and recommend to others!

A stylish and intimate performance space. The magic happens right in front of you!

Dennis is an amazing and entertaining guide to a truly magical adventure. The show was a rollercoaster of laughs, and the many amazing parts all came together in the end like an unbelievable puzzle that has been in front of you the whole time, you just needed someone to show you how to see it.

I've been and loved it, but it was awhile ago. Would the show be appropriate for children aged 9 and 6?

I like its ornate décor, the stadium style seats set-up which offers good stage view, the acoustics, and the overall aesthetics of this venue which makes it an ideal place to watch live events. On my recent (late June 2026) visit to see The Human League, Soft Cell, and Alison Moyet for the Generations tour, overall, I had a good experience. There were couple of issues that we had such as lack of cool air circulation inside the auditorium (it was hot and sweaty) and a couple of people standing throughout the show to dance, blatantly blocking other peoples' view and not caring about being inconsiderate and uncourteous to people behind them to which the theatre ushers had no problem with it. Otherwise, I have not had issues at this venue. So, 4.5 stars but rounded up to five. I look forward to going back here.

When we first arrived, upon checking our tickets, our tickets wouldn't scan/verify. The usher was getting frustrated with us for this, and made us go to the ticket booth to get our physical tickets. We showed the person the tickets on our phone, and she printed them out for us -- after several rounds of confusion on her part. She was so soft spoken (in a noisy theatre entrance) that it led to much confusion. After this, we had to "cut" back into the entrance line (the security guard was helpful here) and we got thru the gates, finally. Then this usher/ticket checker who scanned our tickets (the 2nd time) was literally yelling at us on which direction to go (not a yelling as in being loud, but yelling like we were stupid). I go the way he yells at me because he won't stop yelling at me to go the direction he points me in -- which is the wrong direction. We had orchestra seats and were headed there, but this usher/ticket checker was yelling at us to go up the stairs. Fine, maybe I'm wrong. We get upstairs, and the 2nd usher again points us in the wrong direction to go further upstairs. This is again incorrect. We are flustered and confused, and not sure what is going on. We finally reach the 3rd usher at the top of the stairs, and he finally points us in the correct direction. The ushers here (Sans the 3rd one) were incompetent and rude.

Somehow, I learned about a children's production presented through their educational wing. I'm not sure if their education & engagement was this strong in years past or perhaps I simply wasn't dialed into their offerings, but that's definitely changing now. We went to see Splish Splash. This was a 50 minute long story about a blue heron and friends who are seeking to repair the moon after it fell into Lake Michigan. There were songs, there was play, and it was highly interactive. The kids--fellow "sailors", along with three of the cast members--learned a song to sing along at various parts of the show. There were several times when the kids were invited onto the "stage" (it was in one of their lab/classroom spaces, so there wasn't a raised stage) to help or participate. It was so well done, and kept the kids engaged. I really loved how this experience was designed. Upon arrival we were checked in and pointed to one of the classroom spaces. I was surprised because I wasn't sure how actors could be safe there, but it was actually a room for the kids to color and read books or play with toys and stuff before we were taken into the room where the performance took place. I've only seen something that was meant to keep kids busy like that before showtime is at Filament Theatre, and we've gone to kids shows at two or three other theaters by now. It was a great touch. This production was specifically geared toward children aged 0-5, which is atypical and felt so special that it was written with the littlest theatergoers. One of the important pre-show reminders was for adults, reminding us that it's a no-shush zone! I'm so excited that one of the most important theaters in the city, and the oldest non-profit theater still in operation in Chicago, is so committed to developing young audiences in an exciting way and meeting them where they're at. I was reminded of the same issues I mentioned in my earlier review, issues that persist after almost a decade. Like many theatres, they make you wait outside (in this case, in the cold), while they get the theatre ready. Maybe they don't want to pay for the workers to be there for too long beforehand? It makes for a crappy experience. You are then funneled inside while security guards bark orders at you, even when all you're doing is trying to find your way inside in a polite manner. Luckily, the guard in our line was nice enough and joked around with the kids. The lobby is tiny, unlike the other major theatres downtown, so that is something to be aware of. There's really zero room to breathe, and the intermission bathroom line snakes up from the basement into the bar line. Luckily, I got there earlier on, but that's a bad experience. The bathrooms aren't that nice, sadly, and they could use extra care. There are a lot of stalls that don't lock, don't have purse hooks attached anymore, etc. Worse yet, the attendants are on a power trip, though they're not quite as mean as others in similar theatres, and the line moves quickly. I just don't appreciate them yelling "up against the wall!" It's a bit much. The orchestra seats were pretty comfortable and even have good sight lines for short people! From what I saw, the snacks weren't as expensive as one might imagine, though not cheap. Frustratingly, there is no public wifi here. What year is it?

I attended The Phantom of the Opera last night and unfortunately, the experience was significantly disrupted by a visibly intoxicated family seated nearby. They spoke throughout the performance and, most notably, sang very loudly during the final song--directly over the performer during what is meant to be a pinnacle and emotionally powerful moment of the production. This behavior was disruptive and diminished the experience for many audience members in the surrounding area. This was not an isolated incident. Last year, while attending Moulin Rouge at your theatre, I experienced a similar situation involving two belligerent and intoxicated audience members who talked, sang, danced, and cried audibly through much of Act I and part of Act II before finally being escorted out. I paid $250 for my ticket last night to see one of my favorite musicals, and it is deeply disappointing to have that experience compromised by behavior that should be unacceptable in a professional theatre setting. Audience etiquette is essential to preserving the integrity of live performance, and more proactive intervention would go a long way in protecting both patrons and performers. I want to emphasize that the theatre itself is beautiful, and the productions you host are outstanding. It is precisely because of the quality of your programming that I feel compelled to raise this concern. I strongly encourage you to consider stronger audience management practices to ensure that future performances can be enjoyed as intended.

Because it's BYOB you'll get the 20-somethings that feel they have to get loaded beforehand and then act the fool while attending (do you hear that "Neil"? No one wants the focus on you acting like it was your first experience with alcohol) but Aaron was skilled at bypassing them without causing tension or escalating bad behavior. Aaron's attitude is one of someone who has worked hard to make this little venture work, and he deserves respect and recognition for his obvious commitment and work ethic. His act included variations of tricks performed by other magicians, with his own twists. He is an expert at sleight of hand and distraction, which is considerably more difficult in a room about the size of an average residential living-room. He had an appropriate sense of humor aligned with an audience coming to Boystown, an overtly gay neighborhood in Chicago (if you're not familiar). However he wasn't garish, flaming, flamboyant, or offensive; he managed a perfect balance of innuendo humor and audience engagement without being cheap or ingenuine. The snarky one-liners will likely go over your young kids' heads (although bring them to an early show, your 9 year old doesn't belong in Boystown at 10 pm on a weekend), and he carries himself with class avoiding the use of profanity or graphic terms. Again, I can't overstate that his tricks were amazing, impressive, and captivating - as magic should be. You leave the show shaking your head and wondering how it's done - which truly makes it "magic". You would be hard-pressed to spend $36.36/person for an hour of live entertainment that can match Aaron's performance. Pro-tip: If you're driving there you will need to use an app to reserve parking, as there aren't garages like downtown Chicago and every street is filled with so many signs there's no way you will return and find your car not-towed or not-ticketed. Chicago does this on purpose to generate revenue; you'll see "street cleaning" on Tuesday from xx hour to xx hour, no parking when snow is over 2 inches OR any time from Dec 1 through April 1, loading zone, 15 minute stopping/standing with flashers, no parking, residential permit zone only, bike lanes, bus stop restrictions, etc. If you find street parking and think you've beaten the system, think again. Nobel Prize Laureates, Rhodes Scholars, Ivy League PhDs, Mensa members - you can meet them all at Chicago Central Auto Pound retrieving their vehicles. Stephen Hawking couldn't drive, but if he could and he parked in that neighborhood all the quantum mechanics in the world wouldn't make his towed car reappear from the Chicago Parking space-time continuum. The nice thing is if you do reserve parking and give yourself enough time you can walk to many, many restaurants and bars in the area that are open even after the 10 pm show ends. Thank you Aaron for a wonderful experience, you made my wife's birthday memorable for both of us.
