And under it, there are literal castle ruins from like the 1100s that you can walk through. Plus, the Danish royal family still uses parts of it for fancy events, so it's kind of like government offices + ancient history + royalty all stacked in one spot. Funny story. There's this extremely long dining table (see pics). You're not supposed to sit there but the tour guide said a family sat there to eat lunch one time.

We hadn't made a reservation since we weren't sure how jet lag would be affecting us, but the greeter was very welcoming and added the four of us to the English-speaking tour (it probably helped that we arrived 10-15 mins early). Weather was very nice and comfortable temps. Our tour guide, Wayne (I believe was his name), was very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. He walked us through many key spots around the city, provided lots of interesting points about the local history, architecture, and language, and helped us see things we never would have noticed otherwise! Such a beautiful city, hard to take it all in without some guidance. At the end of the tour, he pointed out a cute little establishment where we could get locally-sourced snacks, drinks, and trinkets, which I really appreciated since so many souvenir shops are just full of items made elsewhere. As many people arrived, they grouped people into groups of 18....2 here, 3 there...switching folks around randomly. When we realized the groups were 18 and not 6 we asked why we couldn't be together. Our tour guide Rekka asked Daniel and we were waved to the group with our friends with a bit of disgust. Daniel then came to us and said with admonishment, "you have disrupted the group, I'm very disappointed!" It was rude. We followed for a bit and left altogether. We chose the two-hour tour, which felt like the perfect balance, not too short and not too long. While it is a bit more expensive than some of the larger boat tours, the experience is much more intimate. With a smaller group, it was easy to ask the captain questions and have meaningful conversations throughout the journey. One of the highlights was a brief stop at a historic military base, where we learned even more about Copenhagen's fascinating history. Along the way, we admired the city's stunning and unique architecture and, of course, made a stop at The Little Mermaid. Our captain, Aske, was one of the best tour guides we've ever had--friendly, entertaining, knowledgeable, and full of great energy. First tip, book ahead. They will prioritize customers if you've booked so that they have a proper sized group. Second tip, don't go to the last tour of the day. I did that and unfortunately, it was a massive group of more than 50 for the English tour. This made for a less than ideal environment with too many people, too far from the tour guide and a slow progression through the city. I'm sorry to say that I left the group after the third stop. I still have high hopes for Sandemans and will be looking forward to using them when I get to Porto next month.

Our guide was not Danish but he knew a lot of cool and interesting facts about Copenhagen which made this experience much more interesting. If it's your first time in town and you are traveling solo this is a great way to meet people, discover Denmark's capital and main tourist attractions and, of course do some sightseeing. Don't forget to tip your guide accordingly to the experience you had. Their job is unpaid and they live off the tips they make with the tours. Everyone on our tour was quite impressed with his ability to communicate in 5 different languages. I really wish I had gotten his name so that he could get Kudo's. (English: Atta Boy or High Praise). He was very knowledgeable about history, architecture and a little culture. We arrived in time to hop on this boat and to take it all around Copenhagen. Some of the things we got to see was the Little Mermaid, Paper Island, Christiansborg Palace, Gammel Strand, Nyhavn and much more. The little Mermaid has been vandalized a number of times. This year it was painted red by someone. The city had to restore her. The Little Mermaid from Hans Christian Anderson is not as big as you would think. But it is an icon of Denmark. This tour was around an hour. My family and I loved seeing all the sights and having the ability to hop on and off at will was a nice added touch.

Charlotte Is Amazing…read more.. When my wife and I travel outside the US (about once a year), we enjoy learning about the Jewish connections in various areas. During early May of 2019, we stayed in Copenhagen for a few days before a cruise with another couple who frequently accompany us. After reading many positive reviews about tours offered by Jewish Copenhagen, the 4 of us signed up. Fortunately, our guide was the owner, Charlotte Thalmay, who is immensely knowledgeable about the history of the Jewish people in Scandinavia and other countries of Europe. Such a recitation of facts could easily have dulled the senses, but Charlotte kept the commentary entertaining with real-life stories, including her own, of the men and women who shaped events during the past 500-700 years. Just listening to Charlotte weave tales and put a human face on the dusty pages of history was worth the price of admission ($100 per person for around 4 hours. Normally, the cost is a bit higher. However, Charlotte brought along a trainee, Hannah, and lowered the price. To us, Hannah was a delightful addition so we would have paid the regular fee). Highlights of our tour were visits to the main synagogue and Jewish Museum near the Parliament building. The synagogue is attractive, well-maintained and even seems to boast of a religious school. The museum is relatively small, but showcased in a gorgeous setting and the story it describes of the Jewish people in Denmark packs a wallop. If you're visiting Copenhagen and have any interest in this community, we'd heartily recommend booking a tour with Charlotte.
