Very happy with the service we received at Hammer Girl Anime. Went to get a birthday gift for our son and we could not find the item. Showed the employee working a picture of the item and he went out of his way to get this for us. He explained some of inventory was in boxes due to returning from a convention, but he would look into it. He sent a picture to the manager who confirmed they had the item and he went into the boxes to grab it for us. He really made a huge difference for us, as this was the only thing our 7 year old wanted for their birthday. The employee was so helpful in answering any questions we had and made our experience pleasant. The selection at the store is great and we enjoyed browsing the variety of products. I have been frequenting Hammergirl Anime for close to 15+ years. The short and sweet of it is this, you won't find more variety, a more knowledgeable staff, and a more comfortable atmosphere than you will here. If we start with merchandise, you can find almost anything you could be looking for. Figures, trading cards, pins, international snacks, stationary, drink water, clothing, plushes, mangas, movies... should I keep going, because I absolutely can! The selection is huge and regularly changing. It can be a bit hard to find older anime/manga merch but as of yesterday I was able to find some Trigun(1997) items which I thought was fun! If you or your children like Pokémon, you're in for a treat!! The staff knows so much about everything!! Each of them are the human Wikipedia of their favorite genres. It's so refreshing to be able to ask if they know something like --- and be directed to something you will love! They are welcoming and warm, if you have questions don't hesitate to ask. You will be helped and educated! The atmosphere is comfortable! You don't have to worry about feeling out of place, this place is welcoming to all. The TV in the front is always playing a different anime which is a cool way to find new anime's to watch! My husband and I started playing in the Pokémon and Final Fantasy card tournaments just recently and everyone is so warm it's wonderful. We instantly felt welcomed. I really want to like this store but the unwelcoming staff make it hard. I've got young children, old enough to read, that are currently finding their way into the anime world. This store has everything they're currently interested in and they loved spending time here but when they're being looked at with disgust as they push the button next to the "Try Me" tag on the toys, being told not to do so passive aggressively in more words than are necessary is uncalled for. I get it, neckbeards are a part of the anime world. This is a cool place with lots of neat merchandise! The employees are passionate about what they sell and love talking with customers. I love that they have card tables and tournaments and events all the time to keep people coming back. I live in Buffalo but I always make sure to stop in and see what's new whenever I make it out to Rochester! read more

I don't know how or why I didn't think of reviewing this place until now... I come here all the time, in fact, just about any Saturday if you desperately need me, you can come here and find me playing card games with the other regulars, it's my favorite "Hang out" spot in the Rochester area mainly because of the staff and most of the regulars. Also the fact that I love anime all too much helps it in my eyes as well...y'know. But this is an anime store in Henrietta, close to home. As anime is a pretty niche thing, finding anime stores is rough. The fact that we have one here is a blessing in itself, the fact that it's easily one of the larger ones I've ever been to makes it that much better. They keep up to date with their anime and try to focus a lot of larger orders on whatever is trending obviously, however they do get some of the more obscure stuff in as well at times. For DVD's they have quite a bit of the obscure stuff I should point out. Obviously, as it's anime merch, some shows might not have plushes and stuff available but that's usually due to what is available for them to order. If it's available and priced within reason I think they usually get it. The selection is actually really large, up front there's a couple hundred anime DVD's, on the far right wall, tons of plushes & figures, and littered all throughout to make the most of their space they have a ton of smaller shelves and stands with trading figures, used manga, keychains, and little trinkets. The counter is covered with different trading card games, most notable being Weiss Schwartz (Which this store holds all of the national tournaments for, it gets pretty crowded during those, or when all the Canadian players come over). Up front on the right there's a comfy little lounging area with couches and a TV usually displaying the first episode of an anime, drama, or a movie occasionally. In the back there's some arcade games. They also keep the store stocked with drinks and snacks, and there's several places within walking distance to go grab actual food if you're hungry. (Okay, I'm a sucker for idol shows, and the amount of Love Live and Idolmaster there is never a bad thing :) ) Prices and competitive and let's face it, you don't often find a variety of merchandise for most shows. Large card gaming section in the store too, there were some busy and vibrant Pokemon games happening when we visited. (Yes, it's also a Pokemon gym for Go players!) The wife and I came here on the recommendation of a very lovely lady who works at an anime store in Vermont; we literally drove about seven hours to visit this place because of how much she hyped it up and it totally met our expectations. This place is AMAZING. It's like walking through Akihabara when you step inside and they carry so much JP merch/Weiss Schwarz stuff it's insane. They have SO MUCH from a spectrum of anime it's amazing. The guy who I think is the owner is amazing too; he searched high and low and went above and beyond to grab me character specific merch as well as promo stuff. He also recommended me manga based on what I liked which was really thoughtful. We spent our souls here and regret nothing; this place is worth every star. read more

Only stopped in to look around and I have to say there was way more in there then I expected. Tons and tons of collectibles from pins, buttons, posters, figures, clothing, manga, DVDs, sti let's, etc etc. Huge selection with so much to look at. Prices seem a little on the higher side for some things, and staff never really acknowledge I walked in. But besides that, it was a cool place to look around. read more

I have had much better customer experiences at the DMV. I brought my son here to pick out a manga. every time he opened a book to look at it the teenager at the counter was appallingly rude, telling him he was not allowed to read anything, despite signs posted saying he could look at the first chapter. The kid was obviously enjoying being a little Hitler to a nine year old kid. We left without buying anything. Will not return. read more

Yeah, as you have read elsewhere probably the staff definitely thinks they are superior to you... you are just there to pay for their steeply overpriced items. I would shop frequently when they used to carry higher-end items, not that they seemed to appreciate my return business. Now they focus on low-cost high-profit gashapon type stuff. You can find better options at Dan's Crafts and Things, that's right, an arts and craft store! A store packed with anime, manga and related products - what a great idea! (For the manga / anime fan, I mean. I still think it's unlikely a store with such a narrow, and probably short-term-trendy, focus could possibly enjoy a long existence.) Determined to bask in its awesomeness before it disappeared into the Chapter 13 folder, I visited soon after they first opened. No denying my disappointment. Then and unfortunately now. The place was / is small and poorly stocked. They keep surprisingly little stock on the shelves - hot new releases are frequently sold out, the back catalogues of the manga series are usually missing multiple volumes, and the anime selection is sparse. I'm assured they're happy to special-order titles upon request, but why should I do that when a) the title is almost always sitting on the shelf of a local bookstore or DVD retailer, and b) I can order the more obscure items online and have them shipped to my door faster than Hammergirl can get them for me? And things only seem to be getting worse. More and more they're taking a bizarre scattershot approach to merchandise - offering smatterings of manga (new and used - there's no sign, but the used stuff is shrink-wrapped), anime, junk food, how-to-draw-manga books, posters, figures, and knick-knacks. Check out their website - it portrays them fairly accurately, with the biggest difference being the online anime and manga offerings are even more meager. I also have to wonder about the wisdom of consuming relatively large amounts of floor space with a lounge / anime viewing area in the front and a couple idle arcade games on the back wall. There're always a small number of people in the store, but they never seem to be customers - they're just hanging out and chatting with the staff - gives the place a someone-else's-private-party vibe. Today's a sad day, because I've finally given up my long-standing hope that Hammergirl would improve, hit its stride and completely win me over. I almost certainly won't be back - it always kills me to leave Hammergirl empty-handed, take a short drive over to a big-box store and find the item I want on the shelf. Buying it feels a little like a betrayal, but it also feels like I'm taking my money to the store that's trying harder to give me what I want. read more

Hammergirl has been open for over 10 years and my husband and I have been going since day one! It's been awesome seeing the store mature over the years and it's really a fixture in the community for anime, manga and card games. It's well stocked with the latest manga, figures and anime toys. If they don't have something in, they are always willing to order. I'm often behind on series so this is a great value add. And items are always in fantastic shape. It's paradise for an anime fan. The store is organized and comfortable to browse and the staff are knowledgeable about what they sell. Their stuff is authentic too. No bootlegs or cheap knocks offs. The pricing is very fair for being import items. We hope to be shopping at Hammergirl for many years to come! read more

The selection and quality of the merch has severely depleted over the years and the customer service is god awful. The two owners have really let the place go. They have adopted a very bad attitude towards their customers and it feels like they will not hesitate to automatically yell at you for accidentally breaking any of their rules no matter how minor. Last time I was there, me and two friends of mine got screamed at by the two owners, who just happened to hear us having a private conversation, because they considered what we were talking about a violation of their "No Spoiler" policy (which I never knew about because the ONE sign they have up is on the front door surrounded by like 20 other big and colorful posters so you can barely see it). I've gone in and out of the store several times and it's as a few of the other lower star reviews say. People tend to hang out and talk which is fine it's in a college town and kids want to talk and enjoy their hobby that's fine. What's not fine is when you see signs everywhere saying don't talk about spoilers and when I go to pick up a book and skim through it I get yelled at for either how I'm holding it or reading it without paying. There was one time I wanted to give them my business since I love the genre and want to support local business. I preordered two voulmes of dvds one came out a month before the other first order simple they called said it was there went to pay and pick it up simple easy. Next order I placed never got a call. So I called two days later after the release of the dvd thinking maybe they didn't get it on time they said I never paid for my last order so they cancelled it. I was searching for a certain action figure and could not find it anywhere for under $50, that is when I came across this website deep within a google search.... Anyway, not only did they have the figure I was looking for, but they had 2 different versions for $14.99 each. I was skeptical but placed my order prepared to have my credit stolen.. I received the characters today, in perfect condition with no weird charges to my credit card and an extremely reasonable shipping rate. Well since FYE moved out of Eastview mall, this is the only store in the Rochester area if you want anime merchandise. I remember when it first opened back in 05 and was super pumped. I went in there not too long ago (last time was in 08) and was the same old same old mostly. They now have some MY Little Pony stuff in there (seriously?). THE BEST PLACE TO GO TO FOR YOUR ANIME NEEDS. OK i used to get some Anime merch from FYE,target,walmart etc. But when i saw a comerical for hammergirl anime i had to go. I do admit it was hard to find it. But when you do you're in for a treat! You can get much more stuff than at any of the stores mentioned above. As one person said "its small." Yes but its has alot of stuff. Also yes its pricey but that because alot of merch is from japan (import). Which makes it awesome. The people who work there are nice.
