I love the Hammock Shops! It's such a peaceful and serene environment, and it feels like time stands still while you're walking through the village. I loved the all-white color palette, which included the buildings, walking trails, and obviously, the hammocks; which was complemented by the luscious green vegetation. In addition, I loved the many places that you could stop and sit, which consisted of benches, tables, and chairs, as well as a beautiful gazebo. Finally, there were so many cool shops that sold a variety of miscellaneous items, as well as a restaurant that I wish I could have gotten to eat at. All-in-all, I loved the Hammock Shops, and would consider it a must-visit while you're in Pawleys! read more

Had a good experience at the hammock shops. A lot of variety to see and experience. My favorite shop was the Olive Oil store. A lot of great varieties there. Also there is parking in the back lot so if you can't get a space up front, just go to the back parking. read more

One of our favorite vacation activities when we need a break from the sun on the beach. The playground is a great add for the kids to run off some steam between shops. We have been returning since the days of the Rice Mill Café. The grounds have lots of benches and seating for taking breaks and beautiful Carolina landscaping. What a fun. Over twenty shops and restaurants in a little oasis near the beach with beautiful plants and music playing in the background waits for you. The sign says it's been here since 1938. All the shops were fun to visit, browse and we found some great finds to take back to Indianapolis with us. We all had a fun time! read more

We were not impressed with this little shopping village. It's cute and all but the stores were pricey and mostly did not interest us. Some even had that strange flea market feel where they are trying to get rid of random stuff. The Olive store was nice and the staff was sweet and where we made our purchase. A family tradition for our family vacation. We sometimes drive and sometimes bike from Murrels Inlet. There is such a nice variety of shops from magic, candles, olive oils, shoes, wine, gifts, hammocks, candy, t-shirts, women's clothing, wine, Christmas,,and a few restaurants thrown in. There aren't many choices in restaurants here. Probably the weakest area. Location is easy to find off 17, ample parking available, chairs and a playground for those who don't want to shop. Parking is very limited, but if you circle around the complex a bit, someone will pull out and you can find a spot. There are a lot of very different stores in this open complex - clothes, jewelry, Pawley Island T-Shirts, accessories, shoes and a candy store to name a few; there is even an open restaurant to grab some food. I attended an Island Fest at this Complex, but it seemed to be geared more towards kids. However, it was still nice to check out the different stores and see what they had to offer. read more

Adoooorable! I collect bookmarks from all around the world, so on my trip to SC, I was on the prowl for one. Perhaps people are illiterate (JK), or they've simply taken to their Kindles, but I couldn't find a bookmark anywhere in Charleston. I found a lovely one in a shop here; I was so happy. We love the hammock shops. So many different shops to go too. We love the oil shop where we get the Tuscan herb oil that we use for many different dishes. Tastes great on spaghetti noodles. What a great way to spend a Sunny November Day, not crowded at all and you can easily walk at your leisure on the paved walkways (which by the way are pristine) through out the quaint complex which houses twenty-eight plus stores. They also have eating areas and plenty of benches and chairs to rest your weary feet. It's a perfect area for the wheelchair dependent or those who have difficulty walking. Parking was no problem today. This place is absolutely touristy but also a delight just to walk around and in and out of shops at your own leisure and desire. Plenty of ideas for home decor, beachy of course, clothing, Olive Oil store with samples and children's stores, wine and a Christmas Shop. I think it's the same as The Christmas Mouse Chain. I may be wrong but looked very familiar to that one. Anyway I enjoyed mulling through it all. They also have a little kids play area which is useful while adults shop. So if you have a day and you are trying to decide what to do, take a trip up here either alone, as I did or with a girlfriend. So much fun and well with the drive from Charleston. They are only closed four days out of the year and those four are the major holidays. Good to know. read more

Extremely rude staff EVERYWHERE except for the Christmas Mouse. Fudge at the Hammock Shops was dry and tasted old. Extremely dirty inside. Seems like it had been years since it was actually deep cleaned. They also had used disposable masks all over the place. read more

Shopping for a hammock has to include a stop in to chat with weaver Marvin. A delightful good will ambassador will share stories and demonstrate the art of hammock weaving. If you didn't need a hammock before, you will definitely want one to own a piece of art and history! The historic store is full of exciting treasures. I love this quaint little place! This is one of the many charms of Pawleys. Shopping, dinning and hammocks made right in front of you! A little bit of everything in this small area, and a little bit of everything for everyone. I'm not even a tourist, and I love coming here! Whether it's to get my hammock repaired, buy a new book, dining at Bisqit, find a nice little gift for friends or family... this place always offers so much. Don't leave until you stop by and say hello to Marvin Grant... the Hammock guy... he will entertain you with some funny stories and if you have kids, will apprentice them for a bit and you walk away form some goodies, like rope bracelets and key chains. ===================== Mr. Marvin Grant: The Hammock Guy Marvin Grant has deep roots in the Pawleys Island Gullah community. In 1991, after serving in the US Army, Grant moved to Pawleys Island and lived with his aunt, Evelyn Knowles. A longtime hammock maker, she began teaching Grant the basics and soon thereafter he got a job at the Pawleys Island Hammock Manufacturing Company. He soon became one of the company's most skilled hammock makers. In June 1993, he moved over to the Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock Shop and he still works there today. Established in 1938, this shop has been an icon for a Lowcountry tradition dating to the late 19th century. Hammocks have a long and rich history. Most sources indicate hammocks originated in the West Indies and were then introduced to Central and South America in the 1200s. Early hammocks were woven from the bark of the hamack tree and later sisal fibers were used. Animal skins or cloth were also used by many cultures. Spanish explorers noted the use of the hammock by indigenous people throughout the Caribbean and soon adopted them for bedding on board their ships. They provided a practical alternative to mattresses. Thanks to the widespread nature of mariner operations in the 16th and 17th centuries, the use of hammocks spread relatively quickly throughout the world. The use of the first rope hammock is attributed to Captain Joshua Ward in 1889. A South Carolina riverboat captain, Ward made a hammock out of cotton rope as an alternative to his grass-filled mattress. His refinements to the traditional hammock designs of his day have remained key features of the now famous Pawleys Island hammock - spreader bars and a double-thatch weave that produces the lattice pattern. The Pawleys Island community has been the center of the hammock making industry since 1938, when the family of Joshua Ward opened the Hammock Shop. Since then, a long line of skilled hammock makers have learned the craft and passed on the skills necessary to weave hammocks. Grant has taken great pleasure in teaching other people how to make hammocks - adults and children alike. He has been featured by numerous media outlets - The New York Times, Southern Living, NBC News, and the Washington Post - for his recognized skill in the art form. This was my first visit to Pawleys Island Hammock Shop. Marvin was working, I have heard many wonderful stories from my parents and grandma and I must say, I wasn't disappointed! The shop is small but interesting, there are letters, postcards and pictures everywhere from patrons who have visited. Mr. Marvin has left quite the impression on all ages. Marvin taught my 14 year old how to weave the beginning of a hammock, a bracelet for me and a key chain for my husband. He was witty and just a pleasure to meet. If you're looking to spend some time away from the beach, this place is a nice contrast to the sun and water. Lots of little knick-knack shops, and a couple places to eat. Parking can get a little crowded, so plan to arrive earlier in the day. You could spend a few hours just browsing here. read more

Adorable shopping complex to enjoy while walking around. We loved the wine shop where we tried a few new wines (most are imported rather than local or even US wines) and left with a bottle of Spanish red and a white from Hungary. was able to visit the hammock shops this year its been a few years since visiting. the atmosphere is wonderful and reminds me of a litle town called mystic, connectucut except this place is all about the southern charm. i would like to say there are boutiques that are higher in price than desirable but it is a must do at myrtle beach. read more
