Do not stay at this Hampton. The Hampton Inn & Suites in Ames, IA has a horrendous cancellation policy. I needed to cancel an upcoming stay for ISU graduation, for Friday May 10th and Saturday, May 10th. I reserved this room many weeks ago. Even though I'm a Hilton Gold member, the cancellation policy required a 21 day advance notice. At the time, I was lucky enough to get the reservation, since the hotel was filling up fast, so I didn't take this policy as seriously as I should have. This Hampton has ben sold out for these dates for weeks. The rate was nearly $400 per day. Right now, I'm out over $800 for this stay. I made this reservation for my son-in-law; this past Sunday, (May 5th), I found out he could not attend. I called the Ames Hampton Monday and was unable to cancel my reservation. I spoke to the desk clerk, a Hilton worldwide reservation agent, and finally, to Jeremy, the General Manager of this Hampton. Jeremy was polite, but immovable. It appears he has no choice in the matter. I asked him: if I were killed in an auto accident on the way to Ames, would my family still eat the cancellation fee? I checked this Hampton's cancellation policy by making some additional reservations online there. Most often, the cancellation policy only required a few days' notice. So: for these very expensive nights over graduation weekend - whose rates rival a stay in midtown Manhattan - the cancellation policy is atrocious. The hotel knows they could fill this room in a heartbeat because the demand is so high. This Hampton franchise is owned by Patriot Hospitality, which in turn is locally owned by Biren Patel. I wrote him and Jeremy an email asking to waive the cancellation fee. To date, I have not received a response. Mr. Patel is ignoring me. I'm a veteran; for someone to name their business "Patriot" and then force their customers into a ridiculous cancellation policy with an exorbitant high rate is anything but patriotic - it's unbridled greed. read more

Clean rooms and a friendly, helpful front desk staff - that's all I need in a hotel, and this place met my needs. In room amenities include a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and a nice TV. There are plenty of electrical outlets and USB charging ports to keep the batteries topped off on all my electronic gadgets. So, yeah, they got that goin' for 'em. Each room also includes a pullout sofa sleeper. They have a decent fitness room and an indoor pool for those cold Iowa days and nights. One little thing really impressed me. I haven't seen this before, but one day when I had the do not disturb sign on my door, they left a package outside my door with some clean towels and a restock of the shampoo, soap, etc. I thought that was really cool. ================ What's keeping them from five full stars? Well, not everything is perfect, but what in life is? These aren't deal breakers for me, but I thought I'd share for you weary travelers. The breakfast (like all the Hampton Inns) sucks. These buffet style omelets just don't make any sense to me. I've had them at other Hampton Inns, so I knew better than to try one. Omelets are NOT meant for a buffet - come on Mr. Hampton, get it together! The other thing to note is that you can hear your upstairs neighbors trouncing around above you. It's one of those hotels with loud floors above you. I could even hear the vacuum when housekeeping vacuumed the room above me. ================ I would stay here again, but if this isn't your brand of choice, there are five more hotels all within a stone's throw (and on the same side of the highway), and just as convenient to get to as this one, so do your research and take your pick. read more

Honestly, the hotel is fine. However, I was traveling for work and had an unavoidable change in my schedule the day I was suppose to arrive. I've been a Diamond member for 5 years. I've even stayed here before. This the first time and first location that hasn't worked with me on a short notice change to my schedule and insisted they were going to charge the night (I was only going to be there for one). Instead I had to drive an hour out of my way to ensure the non-profit I work for wouldn't be charged. There's sticking to hotel policy and then there's not taking care of a loyal customer who spends a lot of nights away from his family at Hilton brand hotels. read more

Don't understand why people didn't like their stay. For me, the front desk attendants were nice and accommodating, the business center is open if you need it, the breakfast wasn't anything exciting but it rarely is anything amazing at hotels. Wheelchair accessibility: We spent one night at the hotel and were happy with the accommodations. I'm a manual wheelchair user and so my evaluation of the room reflects how well those accommodations were met. Getting in the room was typical of many hotel rooms. The door was heavy and there was a good half-inch threshold into the room. It was difficult to open the door independently while going over the threshold, but many hotels are like this. The bathroom was roomy. The room was 2 queen beds with accessible bathtub. I liked that the bench was already in the bathroom without my having to request it. The counter had lovely pull-out desk-tops where I could more easily store my make-up bag. The tub shower with adjustable shower head was fine. Height and accessibility were good, and the shower head wasn't at the top of the pole where I couldn't reach it as it often is at most hotels. The beds were a good height for me to transfer over independently. The mattress was so-so, not as bad as I've had in other hotels, but not as firm as I would prefer. There is only really room between the two queens for a wheelchair. My husband got in and out of his bed in the space between his bed and the wall, it was a bit narrow but worked. All in all, one of the better rooms in terms of accessibility that I have seen - and I travel fairly frequently. If we were in Ames again, I would easily stay here. One unexpected highlight was El Azteca right across the street from the hotel. We didn't have high expectations as it seems to serve most hotels nearby. But the food and service were excellent. Highly recommend. We didn't have breakfast in the hotel but went to The Cafe, a short drive away. Again, highly recommend. Very delicious!! read more

Arriving late at night during a chilly February night, this hotel was a welcome sight! The room was clean and your standard Hampton Inn room. I was given a room with a sofa bed and mini fridge. Neutrogena amenities (shampoo, conditioner, etc) were provided. My only complaint about Hampton Inns in general is the breakfast, which is why all locations start at three stars for me. There is no full kitchen, so there is no stove in the kitchen. Therefore, all hot food is baked. This means bacon is limp, and omelettes are dry. If you don't want canned fruit, it's not uncommon to be served bruised apples and bruised bananas. Nonetheless, there is a wide variety of food available - oatmeal, cereal, waffle maker, etc. I will probably end up staying here again due to business in Ames. Be sure to sign up for the Hilton Honors bonus where anyone can earn an extra 2,000 points/day for all stays through April 30th! Stayed at this location last week, room was very dirty including fingerprints on interior entry door, counter tops, dresser tops, lamps, human hair in shower on walls and floor. I am not satisfied with their tag they put on the door stating the room has been sanitized! read more

I have very few complaints about my stay at Hampton. The building is spotless and the staff helpful. The breakfast was truly outstanding with many rotating items, hot and cold, meat and fruit. The breakfast was definitely the shining star of this experience. The fitness center was miniscule, but they have an agreement with a local gym that allows you to use the facilities there. I was surprised that few if any guests took advantage. My two complaints are regarding the price and the wifi. I came at a busy time, and the very lowest price I could get was $159 for a single person. Not too good, though the quality of the facilities justified it. The wifi was also terrible. You can use the wifi for free, but it wasn't enough to stream Netflix. They try to sell better wifi for $6 a day or so. But otherwise, everything was outstanding. read more

Folks behind the desk were very nice and helped to diffuse a bad situation we had with Expedia.com. We got a jacuzzi suite but the front panel of the tub was broken (seemed dangerous) and one of the lights didn't work in the room. Worse yet - the room key didn't work. It wasn't isolated with us, either. The front desk folks came down to replace keys a few times while we were there. Once, I stood there for five minutes trying the key before it finally worked and that was the third replacement. Pretty annoying. All that said, the nice folks behind the counter and the rest of the experience was pretty good. read more

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL. Not Hampton inn quality. Room was dirty looking, furniture was old and stained, carpet was dirty and stained, room smelled liked feet, wallpaper was coming off wall, walls had holes and chipped paint, room was humid, a/c was loud, ice bucket smelled like vomit, and on, and on, and on.... Looks like they took a lower quality hotel and upgraded it to a Hampton inn without doing any renovations. This hotel is on par with an old highway truck stop hotel. I stayed at the Hampton Inn on Sunday, January 6th in room 311 with my family while traveling through Iowa. The hotel was clean but service was less than exceptional. We were given issues when checking in which left us sitting in the Lobby for several minutes. It was sorted after a manager was involved and we had a clean room. The next morning, we went to breakfast. At breakfast I had a bagel with cream cheese which made me violently ill. The cream cheese was not stored in a fridge but with jellys on the counter. I assumed it would be ok, I was very wrong. As a gold member I've never had such a bad experience with a Hampton Hotel. read more

Not that great compared to other Hampton Inns. Front desk girl was nice enough. A little older hotel. Not much near it. Loses a star for the breakfast. The hotel had a lot of yougurt sitting out with expirations over three weeks ago!! HOWEVER, I told them about it and the front desk manager did something very nice and gave me a certificate for the old yogurt. Totaly unexpected - wasn't much but went a long way with me. This brand new Hampton Inn is perfect for the business or leisure traveler. With Hampton's new decor scheme it is very up to date. As expected, there are plenty of charging ports at the nightstands, a well lit bathroom and comfortable beds. Something is wrong here. Feels like the hotel was converted from a cheaper brand. No papers in the lobby. No envelopes or writing paper in the room. No wastebasket liners. Cookies gone whenever we walked in. Small dining area with paper plates and bowls. The rooms seemed very small even though it had a desk. Really soft, curved mattress which caused us to switch rooms. I know it was Iowa States's Homecoming weekend, but this hotel was not anywhere near worth $179. We left a day early. That should say it all. This hotel really needs a cultural make over as it seems to be run like a Days Inn. Ugh. read more

Was going to pick up my son from Iowa state for Winter break. The night before I was supposed to leave I started to develop some flu-like symptoms. before traveling to get my son I decided to get a COVID test. It came back positive. After making the alternate pick-up arrangements I called the hotel immediatley to try to cancel. I was denied. I am a Diamond member and tried to call the Diamond desk. They tried to get it canceled and were unsuccessful. I sent an email to Hilton's corporate office. They tried to intervene and were unsuccessful. I stay at Hilton properties 50-60 nights a year and have never been treated like this. They would prefer to have a COVID patient come stay at their hotel rather than cancel an $80 reservation? How does that make you feel like a potential guest? I was responsible not to put the hotel staff or its guests in harm's way but they didn't. It's shameful and unconscionable. All for $80!!!! If they treated this situation like this what else are they doing that puts you and your family's safety at risk? read more

This inn is dirty and old. Need to invest or close. They store all maid carts in the hallway to first floor rooms. This cause patrons to shimmy by. The workout room lacks workout equipment. It is a cardio room only. The staff is polite and helpful. Room had the soiled touch. Stained furniture and carpet is soiled. Breakfast area was clean and food, well ok at best. I would only stay here if I had to as a last resort. read more

I ALWAYS stay here when in Ames. I have for four years. The staff is out-of-this-world friendly. They accommodate my request for a quiet room when they can. The breakfast area is newly decorated and always clean, and the food is better than average. While it is not a fancy hotel, and a new one is being built as we speak, the linens are fresh and clean, and the place always seems to be in decent condition. The heating system is average, but I overlook that because I love the staff. They make me feel like I am one of the gang. read more

If I could give a negative star I would. This hotel two weeks ago was a Hampton Inn but is now a Red Roof Inn. I booked through Bookings.com two months ago. The location was the closest we could find to our destination but not ideal. When a closer hotel became available I cancelled our reservation, four days ahead. Two days after my scheduled stay the Red Roof Inn ran my card and charged my account for two nights stay. Calls to Booking.com and to the hotel have been frustrating. So much for free cancellations. The manager is never available to speak to me. Bookings.com says to be patient. Never will I use either location again. read more
