Hampton Inn - La Crosse (South Hill), VA Room 300 Stay: February 17, 2026 Based on my highly controlled, peer-reviewed sample size of three Hampton Inn stays on this six-state + one-District crash-pad tour... I can confidently report: Beds = comfy. Pillows = a systematic failure. The mattress in Room 300? Solid. Supportive. No complaints. The pillows? Structural collapse. They flatten faster than airport bottled water budgets. If you're pillow-particular and have luggage space, vacuum-seal your own and bring it. We're traveling streamlined, so that was a hard pass. Now -- this room is unexpectedly spacious. Hardwood-style flooring, kitchenette with fridge and microwave, hallway separation -- it feels more extended-stay than overnight stop. Big enough that I briefly wondered if we were hosting the next TED Talk. Sink design: Faucet positioned too far back. Water doesn't cleanly clear into the basin. Small detail, noticeable every time. Shower: Water pressure acceptable. Hot water temperature range acceptable. No extremes. Middle lane performance. Towels: On a scale from zero to Brillo Pad -- 6. Enough exfoliation to wake you up in the morning. Also smaller than towels at prior stops. I can only assume the traveling population shrinks as we head north. Breakfast: This was the curveball. We expected the standard chain-wide lineup. Instead: plant-based sausage, rubberized egg discs, and Hampton-branded waffles. Fortunately, I had leftover Chicken Fried Chicken from Cracker Barrel the night before, so I improvised my own chicken-and-waffles situation. Adapt. Overcome. Jen ate enough to be fed and carried on like a champion. Check-in was friendly and welcoming. Whether that energy influenced the room assignment, I'll leave to speculation. Overall: Spacious layout. Reliable mattress. Serviceable shower. Ongoing pillow conspiracy. I must have had the same room as Rory who's room was also next to the back door, according to his review 14 days ago. There was constant traffic going through that back door which loudly slammed all night. That was only one issue. As Rory stated the maintenance was terrible. The shower did not drain and there was something going on with the AC unit on the floor above, I suspect, since I heard dripping water coming in the room and hitting the AC unit in my room. I thought it was pouring down outside and was shocked to discover that it was sunny outside. I'm a VIP with Hilton and feel like they gave me the worse room I'm the hotel. read more

This hotel is in need of an update. Very disappointing, worst carpet I've ever seen in a hotel room. We never got a good night'a sleep and they creak, so the beds need replacing. The location is great, the service and staff was friendly and efficient. The price was great. It just needs a facelift. read more

What a great place to stop off of the interstate. We were here for one night on our way to Asheville, due to its convenient location and great reviews for the price. We had a nice king-size bed, complete with a tub/shower combo AND jacuzzi tub. I didn't use the jacuzzi tub, but boy - did it look comfortable! When we checked in, we asked about a late checkout and were informed that was no problem at all. The bed was comfortable (we brought our own pillows), and the room was clean and comfortable. There's also free breakfast here (standard continental). Very quiet area and a good choice for a short stay in the area. read more

A coat went missing from our closet. We contacted the desk and they would not help. They said "if housekeeping finds it we will let you know." It literally went missing from our closet, so we know that housekeeping "found it." The office wouldn't assist in any way in locating the coat and has not contacted us even though they have our name/number/address and a full description of the missing item. read more

Decent hotel, complementary breakfast is a lot of carbs. Apparently only diamond members can get a late checkout. The front desk lady is going to ask the maid if I can get a late check out. The whole hotel is empty & it's not a weekend so I don't understand why the front desk clerk can't accommodate me. I guess only diamond Hilton rewards members are important here. Located just off I-85 exit 12B. Close to a variety of restaraunts, SuperWalmart Center, gas stations etc. This HIlton property is very clean with friendly staff. Complimentary WiFi and breakfast included with your stay. As a Hilton Honors member I was kindly greeeted at check-in with 2 complimentary water bottles to wet the palate. Pre check-in was available on line where I was also able to select my room of choice (recommended). The hotel was very quite, room was super clean and very comfortable. read more

Very good place. Clean. Breakfast is good on alternate days cause one day is omelets and the next scrambled eggs. You would think they were the same, but the omelets taste microwaved. Aside from that, the staff is cool and the accommodations were awesome and I stayed s week here. read more

This was actually our second or third time staying at this Hampton Inn. My hubs and I stayed here on a Saturday night during our trip to Martinsville for the race. When we visited last year, the first floor common area was being renovated so I was curious to see how it turned out. Looked clean and spacious enough and there was a gentleman at the desk ready to greet us. My husband reserved a room online using his Hilton Honors or whatever acct, and he mentioned to the gentleman (Bill? Bob?) that the reservation said that it was a handicap accessible room and that if we needed to be moved from there, that would be fine. Well, apparently there were no other rooms available since the Ms. VA pageant was happening in South Hill that weekend. Well, fine by us as long as the room wasn't needed by someone else. It was also mentioned that it was a smoking room. Eek. We're both non-smokers. Bob/Bill said that out acct stated "smoking preferred." Eeeeek. Nothing we can do about that now since there weren't any other rooms left. So we walked into the room and... The smell of smoke punched me in the face. I guess since it's a smoking preferred room, the housekeeping staff doesn't even try to make the room smell less like smoke. I really felt like the air was saturated by it. I'm not even sure a smoker would be okay with it. My hubs went to Bill/Bob and returned with a can of Febreeze and some other industrial cleaner. It wasn't working. We went out to eat and buy stuff at the local Walmart because I wanted to spend the least amount of time in that room. So we return from Walmart armed with a new can of Febreeze and some AirWick freshener. Let me tell you, I think those Febreeze commercials with the blindfolded people are all lies. I sprayed the room down--curtains, carpet, bedding, chairs. My nostrils still burned while I slept. Bill was kind enough to put an air purifier in our room while we were away earlier in the evening but we returned it before sleeping; my husband couldn't handle the noise. The bathroom for this accessible room was nice and spacious. There was no partition for the shower except for a curtain so when I was done using it, the floor was all wet, all the way up to the toilet. It was all dried up by morning. The free breakfast consisted of a waffle maker, biscuits, scrambled eggs, Canadian bacon, cereals, oatmeal, assorted bagels and other pastries. OJ, apple juice, milk (I'm assuming; I didn't look for milk). It was good for what it was. Bob was still there in the AM when we checked out. Apparently we don't actually check out to return our key cards. I guess they don't reuse them anymore. Overall, I think we'll use Hampton Inn again next year since it's halfway between Hampton Roads and Martinsville. It was our fault about the smoking room and Bill did all he could to accommodate us. I'm sure if the pageant wasn't happening the same weekend, he would've given us another room. Also, when we checked in he told us the password for the wi-fi network, but we didn't use it. P.S. When I unpacked, my PJs smelled like smoke. It was that bad. Lesson learned! read more

The hotel and decor is old but it's a clean place. The staff is friendly, and they never forget to acknowledge you as a Hilton Honors member --snacks on deck. Complimentary breakfast is completely edible and filling. Don't skip it. I'm reviewing all the chain hotels in hopes that others will return the favor, as I've recently found myself having to read TripAdvisor reviews because these places are so obscure and outdated on Yelp. Being out of nowhere land, this was the only hotel that I thought would be one up the others (i.e., Best Western, Comfort Inn). Our entire experience was awful. After traveling the red eye and flying for about 7 hours, then driving the 2.5 hours to get to South Hill, we arrive at 3:15 PM and the front desk guy asked if we drove here or flew since he wanted us to verify the home address. My husband said our daughter is sleeping in the car and we just flew and drove down, so it would be great if we can check in so she can sleep. He said your room isn't ready yet and check in time is at 4 PM. Are you serious?? I have rarely not been able to check into my hotel room early. Oh and as a bonus, we booked the most expensive room - the suite which is cheap ($125). Maybe I was expecting too much for booking the suite and wanting the royal treatment from the Four Seasons and wanting to check in 45 minutes earlier so my daughter can sleep on a bed vs in the car seat in the heat. So here's the breakdown: 1. Parking lot empty - so really the room is not ready? 2. This hotel is out of nowhere with 2 other competing hotels right next door (great start on the customer service - I mean I get it if the room wasn't ready but he emphasized that we could not check in before 4 which begs the question of was the room really ready and you just didn't want to break the rule?) 3. Check in time is at 4 PM (Understood, but seriously, no suite was available 45 minutes before 4?? Going back to point 2) 4. The most expensive room is right by the ice machine and elevator - Nice touch! 5. The suite was dirty - side of white fridge had stains on it where you would think someone would actually use a cleaning supply to clean it off. The napkins were available by the kitchenette and no cups either - besides the coffee cups. 6. The suite's master bedroom door doesn't even close! 7. Room wasn't ready with play pen - when I asked the front desk he said it wasn't noted in the reservation, but I talked to the HIlton 1800 line and she sent me my confirmation with a play pen, so not sure where the mix up is here but I have the email confirmation. 8. The next day our room was cleaned by 1... interesting on how it couldn't be cleaned by 4!! The maids wanted to clean it at 10 am but we told them to come back. Here's to the one star on why people probably like this hotel 1) cheap (but more expensive than the comfort inn) 2) free wifi, 3) has a swimming pool, 4) free coffee/tea and breakfast, 5) the front door automatically opens through a sensor vs the comfort inn, you actually have to use your hands to open the door. I was not expecting a Hampton to be so much of a dive. It's dirty and smells funny. My room where I had a king bed was cancelled and I got downgraded to a 2 queen room. The most uncomfortable bed ever. The complimentary breakfast was pretty standard, but in this case it had no taste and the bread was stale and the fruit was sour. Housekeeping didn't do that great a job cleaning the room. They left cobwebs on the lamps and there was hair in the tub and on the toilet when I got here. This is not what I expect from the Hampton brand. They are really not that great compared to other Hampton's I have stayed at. read more

The front desk reception person, Laurel, was friendly, professional and kind. She should be recognized for her her efforts and superlative job. This is an outstanding facility. It is very clean and comfortable. I have found Hampton Inn the best deal for the cost. I will always use Hampton Inn as my go-to hotel due-to the friendliness of the staff, and cleanliness of the several facilities that I frequented. Again, Laurel is an example of a true professional. read more

I am a frequent traveler for business (a Hilton Diamond member) and I have never seen such disgusting and poor conditions on a Hilton property. The photos speak for themselves, and the black mold was very obvious to the visual eye in all areas of the hotel room (#206). The mold on the ceiling and behind the peeling wallpaper definitely leads me to believe that it extends beyond one room. If that wasn't enough, there was also a dead roach in the bathroom that the front desk staff tried to justify as "probably just a beetle". Roach or beetle, I wasn't interested in sharing a room with either. I received no correspondence or response from the GM until the Dept. of Health and the BBB were contacted (over 48 hours later). It is inexcusable that the condition could reach this level of peril without it being reported and addressed. I regretted having to report the conditions of this hotel to the extent of calling the Health Department, however, this is incredibly dangerous and minimally unsanitary. read more

Hampton Inn in South Hill, VA has always provided excellent service, has spotless rooms and provides a palatable breakfast that changes each morning. Since it was renovated last year, the furniture is all new and guest rooms -even the exercises facilities - are all A+. Best of all is the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. read more

I waited over an hour to try to get a hold of someone who works at this hotel and was unable to. I am still unable to get through to someone. I work for the government and we give hilton a lot of busy and we use this hotel often whenever we have training out that way. I think it is very unprofessional to not have someone there to assist. I called the customer support line and they were unable to help either. I need to cancel reservations for an emergency and yet I cant find anyone. This will be the last time we book at this hotel again. read more

We have stayed here once a year for 3 years now and have always had a good experience. Our room is clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced ($85). The staff is friendly, and when we needed a toothbrush this year, they were kind enough to give us a real one-not those little 3" long throwaway jobs. The bathroom is a bit small but adequate, and we have a fridge, microwave, and a comfortable bed. Basic accommodations done reasonably well. We will stay here again next year. read more
