We were in the area and felt like a visit to an arcade would be fun. This place has that and many…read moreother things under one roof. A movie theater, laser tag, an arcade, billiards, a bar, and even a Chinese restaurant! Hopefully I didn't leave anything out. We tried the billiards first, but all the per game cheap tables were taken. Only the per hour ones were avail and more than we wanted to pay. Plus the mostly male patrons did not make us feel welcome from the looks we got so we moved onto the arcade. You have to buy a card to play the games and the machine was confusing, even with asking a couple people buying one. Of course there wasn't an employee anywhere inside to ask for assistance, but we finally figured it out. Unless you want to play shoot em up games, most of what they have is for kids, incl a very short whack a mole game. We did play a pinball game that frequently shouted, well that's a real cow pie shot, or something to that effect! Long story short, for as much as they have to offer you're either going to find some entertainment value or not.

Another phenomenal dinner by Chef Lemar Farrington from Amaliea; this time a pop-up Valentines Day…read moreevent at The Nest in downtown Raleigh. The food was elegant and delicious. The perfect setting for an intimate dinner. Started with an appetizer of crab salad atop a round of crisped chicken skin. As with all the courses this one was beautifully presented, atop a upside down tumbler which encased a red rose. A nice romantic touch. Next, an appetizer of beets, strawberry, rhubard. The maple syrup infused beets were the perfect balance to the strawbs and 'barb. Sweet, tart and earthy with a sprinkling of greens on top. On to the tuna. Three slices of ahi are served topped with slivers of manzano pepper, crunchy garlic slices and adorned with cilantro greens. Manzano adds a touch of heat, garlic a little spice. The tuna is fresh, moist and slightly sweet and is enhanced by the unique crunch of cilantro. Wow! Another perfectly balanced taste. My favorite of the evening was the agnolotti stuffed with turkey and corn. Chef's prep of the agnolotti was dumpling size, stuffed with scrumptious rich and flavorful smoked turkey neck. The agnolotti was served in a pool of parm butter sauce, adorned by small slices of char grilled corn. This one has all the flavors and textures going at once. Sweet, creamy, smoky. I could have eaten 3 servings! But wait - there's more! A plump chicken breast, sous vide to perfection - moist and tender. It's served atop a mound of coconut butter beans and sauced with an arc of sweet squash puree and an arc of earthy, garlicky chimichurri. The art of this one is to get a taste of all of the ingredients in each bite. The combination is sublime. For dessert, a wonderful earl gray tiramisu. The tea is a great foil to the sweet whipped cream on top (or was is mascarpone??). Hiding under the tiramisu is a taste of red berry jam to add some fruity sweetness. It's served next to a dollop of roasted vanilla gelato, atop some crunchy chocolate crumbles. The ideal finale to a scrumptious meal. I cannot recommend Chef Farrington more. I was very impressed with Eurostoves when I visited on 7/16 to attend a "Fruit Cook Off" to benefit…read morethe National Multiple Sclerosis Society. One side of the store is filled with amazing cooking gadgets and the other side has a kitchen set up for cooking. If you're looking for a fun housewarming gift, check out the cooking tools side. The fruit cook off event was held in the kitchen side. The owners donated the space to a National MS Society MS Challenge Walk team so they could host the cook off from 11 AM - 2 PM. There were contestants who whipped up delicious dishes: appetizers, entrees, and deserts. The dishes could be sampled for a $2 fee (donated to charity) and boy were they delicious. The contestants were judged by a team of judges including Eurostoves staff. There were also 2 wine shops present at the event that had wine sampling, and lots of raffles with prizes from local businesses. I was very impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the fact that they not only allowed the charity fundraiser to be held there, but helped out as well.

Inside the culinary centre, you'll also find an an array of appliances to check out and play with you if you are shopping for high end stoves, grills, ovens, and refrigerators. Inside the store, we found lots of cool specialized kitchen gadgets and nice cookware. We did leave with some sexy new salad spinners. Yeah, that's right-they are sexy. We also were here for an Italian Feast cooking class and it was a wonderful time. There were only four people in our class, and we made six or seven Italian dishes and it was a really fun. The recipes were spread out on four stations, and everyone worked on different recipes and then sat down and ate together. We made fresh pasta which was fun and added to the pasta putanesca. The teacher was excellent (though I am blanking on her name!) and the kitchen assistant, Sunny, was also very pleasant and helpful. I really enjoyed coming here, and at $65 for a three hour class that includes dinner, it's very reasonable for a little adventure.

All of this for a whopping $10 a person, amazing! My favorite were the sweet potato fries (can't go wrong) and the pulled pork. The veggie burger was also quite tasty and the salad was really fresh and delicious. The staff was very attentive and friendly. Not the fanciest menu, but we had a great experience overall!

This large historical marker on the north side of US-58 at the intersection with Buckhorn Quarter…read moreRoad recalls a time before the Civil War and the Emancipation. It reads, "On 21 Aug. 1831, enslaved preacher Nat Turner launched a revolt that resulted in the deaths of about 60 whites and a similar number of African Americans. Defeated in a skirmish outside Jerusalem (now Courtland) on 22 Aug., the rebels came to this neighborhood, site of some of the largest slaveholdings in the area. They spent the night at Maj. Thomas Ridley's Buckhorn Quarter plantation, about a mile north of here. Local whites seeking refuge spent the night elsewhere on Ridley's property. Four of Ridley's slaves joined the revolt, but other participants deserted amid fears of a white attack. The rebels left before dawn on 23 Aug. and were defeated later that day, ending the revolt." Ona corner in front of a gas station and Pizza Hut, this marker points out the success of a former…read moreslave who definitely went on to do great things. And let's keep in mind - this is the South! The marker reads, "Henry P. Cheatham. 1857-1935. Born into slavery. U.S. Congressman, 1889-1893. Superintendent of Colored Orphanage of N.C., 1907-1935. Grave 8/10 mi. northeast" Online, there is more information. "Born into slavery, Henry Plummer Cheatham represented North Carolina in Congress during the late nineteenth century and helped establish and lead the Colored Orphan Asylum in Oxford. A mulatto, Cheatham--the son of a house slave and her master--was born on December 27, 1857. His father appears to have shielded the young man from slavery and saw to his education. After the death of his father, Cheatham was encouraged by another white man, Robert A. Jenkins, to attend Shaw University in Raleigh. He graduated in 1882 with honors. Although he read law in the office of Robert E. Hancock Jr., Cheatham never practiced. Upon graduation he was appointed principal of the Plymouth Normal School, but his career in education was diverted by the call to politics. "In 1884 Henry Cheatham was elected Vance County Register of Deeds. Rising to prominence in the Republican Party, he became the party's nominee for Congress from the Second District in 1888. In that capacity Cheatham defeated the white incumbent Furnifold M. Simmons. He was reelected to the seat in 1890, but subsequent attempts were not successful. In 1896, in a bitter internal Republican Party race, he was defeated by his brother-in-law, George White. "President William McKinley appointed Henry Cheatham recorder of deeds for the District of Columbia, an office which he held from 1897 until 1901. Cheatham returned to his native North Carolina and, in 1907, became superintendent of the orphanage that he had helped to establish years earlier. Under his leadership the institution dramatically expanded and improved its facilities and programs. He served the orphanage until his death in 1935. Cheatham was married twice, to Louise Cherry who died in 1889, and to Laura Joyner. He had five children. Henry Cheatham is buried in Harrisburg Cemetery in Oxford."
