I've been visiting Hampton Park for a few years and can't believe I hadn't reviewed it- until now. Hampton Park one of my favorite parks in Charleston, as it has both parking (free) and bathrooms onsite. A fitness trail runs inside the park with little exercises to do at various checkpoints, or you can run in the running lane on the road (Mary Murray Blvd) around the park. That run/bike lane is almost exactly one mile, so you pass your vehicle and water (and the bathroom) at each mile. Just be careful running/walking or biking and stay in your lane. The fountain is nice with ducks usually around, and you can feed them, and the Gazebo is a great place for pictures. I'm here at least once a week and often see photography sessions, including wedding photographers- although it is pricey to get married here. Mary Murray Drive around the park closes for pedestrians only several times a week- mainly on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings, so if you come during those times, prepare to park outside the park and walk over. If you haven't checked out Hampton Park, you really should! Lots of events are held here but it's fun to come anytime and walk, run, bike, feed the ducks, have a picnic, or just chill out. read more

Hampton Park is such natural beauty hidden in Charleston. It is great to visit almost any time of year, we stopped by in December (cold out) and walked the park. So many plants, shrubs and trees to admire and appreciate. The large oaks near the pond are a wonder. Picture perfect! The city maintains Hampton Park very well, in the spring the blooming color is awesome. There is a decent walking path around both the pond and the overall park. They have installed a bike rental place, you can use here and then go elsewhere in Charleston. Various times of the year there are planned 5ks, fun runs, and walks around the park and it can be very enjoyable. I use to run around the park as a Citadel cadet, and remember enjoying the shadow of the tree canopy as I ran around it. But as a local or tourist, stop by this beautiful park and soak up Charleston charm. Thanks Charleston! read more

We visited Hampton Park for the first time yesterday. It is one of Charleston's largest parks and offers free parking and restrooms. The park has a fitness trail so there were lots of people using that to run and/or bike. We walked the grounds and were really impressed with the beautiful trees and flowers throughout the park. I loved the water feature and pond because there were a dozen Canadian geese hanging out (they are so pretty though you should watch where you step when around them). If you are looking to get some walking or running in, have a picnic or just enjoy a nice book on a beautiful day, I definitely recommend Hampton Park! read more

I have a love hate relationship with Hampton Park. I train with a running group and we meet here twice a week. My workouts are tough and painful - and sometimes I can dread coming to the park. But once I get here, I see the beautiful paths and I start to feel better (just a little). The loop around the outside of the park is a mile, and many times we will run that loop during our workouts. My favorite part is at the end of practice, the sun begins to set and we do our stretches. The park is so beautiful at sunset. There is also a bathroom and a couple of water fountains if you need them. read more

There are a lot of places that I love to visit in Charleston and Hampton Park is definitely one of my favs. I try to come here at least once or twice a month and have introduced several of my close friends to this park. There's gorgeous flowers blooming year round, including azaleas, camellias, wisteria, magnolias, and gardenias. There's a nice workout area as well. This was where I had my first date with my now-bf. Hank (my one and only true love) loves the dog park and all the friends he makes every time we go. I love the park too as it's a decent medium size allowing you to keep an eye on your four legged friend and all their butt sniffing action. The fences also are great and sturdy compared to most dog parks I've been to which is great if your little explorer is also a Houdini. Did you know that Hampton Park used to be the location of a horse race track? And a former zoo, and the site of the failed South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition? A lot has changed in Hampton Park since the early 1900s, but it still remains a great place to enjoy nature, take a walk, have a picnic, take a nap in the sun, or get fit with the Parcourse FitCircuit. Hampton Park also hosts the occasional frisbee golf tournaments. Recently the City reconfigured the road around the park (Mary Murray Dr) to consist of one vehicle lane, a bike lane and a pedestrian lane. During Daylight Savings Time (Spring, Summer and partial Fall), the vehicle lane closes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 to allow full pedestrian and bicycle use of the entire road. It's a lovely park to visit for both tourists and locals alike. read more

A beautiful park that was once a horse race track. You'd never know though based on how it currently looks, but I'm very happy with my visit, and look forward to the next one. The park itself is beautiful and unless you did more than drive by it, you'd never know how much it has to offer. I came here this past weekend for a non-profit event, and I'll be coming back again for a 5k pretty soon, so I can't wait to get a different perspective of the park. I would go into more detail about the park, but everyone before me has already done that, so I'm just going to advise you to find a spot to park, get out, and enjoy a day at the park ... you won't be disappointed, and there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance too! read more

Just had moved to Charleston and was looking for a dog park. My dog is as friendly and social as they come. He plays with any kind of dog. A dog came in and instantly attacked my dog. Rushed him to the vet and the bill the patch the hole was almost $3,000. Won't be returning to this park and wouldn't recommend to anyone that cares about the pet they own. Hampton Park is such a gorgeous green space. The landscaping is impeccable and compliments the large live oaks with Spanish moss dripping from the branches. Depending on the season, you may be luckily enough to find explosions of azaleas or gardenias or magnolias. There are several types of paths for a peaceful stroll, a bike ride, or to get in a tough workout. Definitely worth spending a few hours enjoying the outdoors here. read more

I brought my dog to the enclosed bark park. There were a lot of dogs and my pup was really happy. All dogs need to have current vaccinations and wear their tag while in the park. I loved the fact that they have a water fountain for humans and one for dogs. Don't get stuck running the water for the dogs, however. You'll be there forever haha. It's really nice and big park for your dog to run around. This is the only part of the park that I visited but I'll be back to check out the trails. read more

This is our favorite park to take our dog to (mostly because it's the closest to our house). The Hampton Park Dog run is a large dog park that is fenced in with really high fences on 2 sides and a typical 4 foot fence on the other 2. When we first got our dog I was worried about how secure this park was, and I can assure you they aren't going anywhere unless they leap over the fence. This park isn't the most glamorous, but it gets the job done. It's mostly dirt with some patches of grass. We really like that there are woods our pup can explore and chase squirrels to her heart's desire. There is a large water bowl that you can refill, which is nice because it often gets dirty and gross from the pups. Definitely wouldn't recommend coming here after it rains because it's all mud! As with all dog parks, I would keep a close eye on your pup when they are here. This park can often become crowded and you never know which dogs won't get along with each other. We try not to go at peak hours (after 4pm) because when you have 15-20 dogs in the mix, things can get dicey pretty quick. We have never had anything bad happen to Tater, but that is because we pay attention to when a dog is getting too rough. Overall, a great place to take a very social dog. read more

We love bring our dogs to Hampton Park dog park. It's a great size and all fenced in so no need to worry when I let the pups run off the leash. My furbaby is deaf so I only like to take her leash off if it is completely fenced in. There are shaded parts as well as open areas. Plenty of benches for puppy parents to sit and hang out while the dogs run and play. It's free and all are welcome! And no need to worry if your dog gets thirsty there's a water fountain for you and for them! read more

Fantastic park with so much space for your pleasure. Also great fitness trail with workout stations along the way. The center of the park has a nice water feature and floral gardens that a in full bloom and floral aroma right now. Also some magnificent Live Oak trees, as well as beautiful Myrtles, Camellias, and two new stunning Peppermint Peach trees planted in honor of Joe Riley. Come here for a nice walk early in the morning before the heat gets to be too oppressive. If you're more interested in the fitness aspect, in addition to the trail on the park grounds there is a loop around the park that is popular for bikers and joggers. read more

This park is so beautiful & well kept, not to mention huge! It has a beautiful pond with ducks, bridges, small waterfalls, and trees. There is plenty of grass to play frisbee, run the dog, get some sun, enjoy a date, or take the kids out! Want to run? Enjoy their 3 mile length marked course through the beautiful trees and flowers with obstacle options all along the way. There is even a dirt trail to run for those with vibrams or who just prefer something different. There is so much to do here and so much space, it's a perfect little get away downtown. All it needs is a playground, who knows maybe there is even one there I haven't seen! read more

Great park to run. They have a mile long path that wraps around the park (mile markers in place as well). It's shady and covered with trees for those really hot days. For those of you that are super fit, they have obstacle course training along the path. Dogs are very welcome, and I like to bring mine for a short run. The largest park in Downtown Charleston. They say that it formerly housed a racetrack and a zoo, but you'd have to look that up somewhere else as I'm not the expert on that. I am, however, an expert at avoiding the duck shit around the pond and the Citadel Cadets that run around in the bushes playing army man dress up. I finally got to go walk around Hampton Park, and boy how I wish I lived in that area now! I decided to take a walk since I parked my car in Hampton Park Terrace for the STEM festival at Brittlebank. Hampton Park was so lovely, even on a "winter" day. The grounds are very well kept, and there seems to be some parking for park goers and street parking in the surrounding neighborhoods. I also noticed doggy poop bags available in case you left yours at home, which is nice (no excuses!) I can imagine it gets crowded during the warmer months. The lakes and bridges were so pretty, and the road circles around the park. I definitely will be adding Hampton Park to my list of drive by places for my visiting tourist friends and family. This place would be perfect for prom/wedding/family photos. I feel like this park is to Charleston as Piedmont Park is to Atlanta. I can't wait to attend an event here. read more
