Here is a brief description of the traditional Hawaiian hale. I am pleased to be able to offer guests the opportunity to experience Hawaii--and particularly unspoiled Hana--in the footsteps of my ancestors. Our state motto is "the Life of the Land is preserved in Righteousness" and I have created the hale for people who can appreciate the traditions of the Hawaiian people and why they so dearly love these islands. I have created a comfortable, private compound for people to enjoy the outdoor garden lifestyle environment. Living in this traditional setting allows you to be close to the plants and smell their fragrance, to feel the gentle ocean breezes and hear the sounds of waves on the shore, and wake to the birds singing in the distance. Three years ago I became certified to build traditional Hawaiian hales, and it is the first time in over 100 years that the County of Maui and the State of Hawaii are allowing hales to be built again. Using my 30+ years of experience, I have combined today's tools and techniques together with ancient Hawaiian building crafts to make outdoor living practical and comfortable. Experiencing the hale merges traditional Hawaiian outdoor living practices with modern conveniences. And even though you will be dinning "unplugged", you will be able to appreciate the magic of the sunrise and sunset, the brilliance of stars, and hear the music of wind, waves and birds as they lull you to sleep and wake you in the morning. The Hawaiians have lived this kind of lifestyle in Hana for hundreds of years and hales were effective shelter for our tropical environment and climate. With this new innovative hale compound, I have tried to re-create a traditional outdoor atmosphere while providing the modern comforts that will make your dinning as pleasant as possible. A separate building twenty feet away houses the modern kitchen and bathroom facilities. It is up-graded with lighting in the kitchen service and bathroom areas only. I had tried to make the experience as Romantic and as comfortable as possible yet still keep the integrity of the Hawaiian architectural building tradition that combines with modern day living in an outdoor setting. Although the Hale compound looks rustic, it is adequate to serve breakfast or dinner to my quest for a small additional fee should they desire to have full serve with the rental of the main house. The road to Hana is an absolutely beautiful drive. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is visiting Maui. If you want to just lay back and take a drive this is the place where you want to be. If you're bit on the wild side and want to go hiking in jumping off waterfalls in swimming in amazing pools then you need to take this drive also. There's a bamboo forest that you can walk through that shows you how the bamboo grows from the ground up. There's a flowering tree park that shows and displays banana trees papaya plants avocado plants and big bamboo. You'll be amazed by all of the exotic plants here! Make sure you stop on the side of the road anytime you see a waterfall and make the trek up there you'll be glad that you did. The abundance of wildlife here is absolutely stunning I've never seen anything like it. As you continue to go up the Hana highway you'll see minimarkets on the side of the road and make sure you stop by and get some fresh fruit or some tuna salad it's amazing.
