Hanalei Valley Lookout is a wonderful roadside stop for those folks making the drive to and from the coveted Kalalau Trail in Na'Pali Coast State Wilderness Park. It is 10 miles east of the popular hike. I actually stopped by here midday after completing Kalalau Trail. The surroundings were clear and full of lush green mountains, symmetrical farmland squares and perfect cloud covering making for a pristine setting. Just standing at this lookout conjured up feelings of that quintessential vista point you'd expect to uncover exploring the Hawaiian Islands. Hanalei Valley is such a quick and easy pullover. There's enough room off the side of the road for vehicles. And you're right there to soak up the views. Best of all is right next door to this Hanalei Valley Lookout is Hanalei Bay Lookout (1/2 mile from each other to be exact) so you get rewarded with two terrific observation points for the price of a single admission. You can take 5 minutes to admire the landscape or even 10 - 15 minutes. Come and go as you please and it's free of charge. I would mention that it can get crowded at any time. One moment I was alone and next instance strangers were asking me to take photos of their families. For those visitors and tourists exploring around the island of Kauai, I highly suggest stopping by this Hanalei Valley Lookout. You can also include not just Hanalei Bay, but I also had fantastic sightseeing perspectives at Kilauea Lighthouse Overlook Point, just another 7 miles east along Kuhio Highway. read more

Simply beautiful and amazing to see the Hanalei Valley from this vantage point. You must pull over and see it at least once. We did.. TWICE. We were staying in Lihue and had driven north to pick up friends staying in Princeville Resort and doubling back to Kapaa for a birthday brunch the day after 4th of July. We got to the lookout a little before 9am. It's simply beautiful to see the taro fields below, perfectly manicured with the mountains just behind them. Kauai is amazing for many things and the visuals such as this are one of them. So much lush greenery... And the mountains. Just amazing. Definitely worth a stop to take in the beauty, snap a couple of photos and just admire the valley. My good friend married one of the grandchildren on the taro plantation in the valley to the right of the river. It was great to see it in person because he has talked about it often. I hope that view never changes... It's absolutely a sight to see. read more

The Hanalei Valley Lookout is just off Highway 56/560 outside the town of Princeville. You will see a pull out on the mountain side of the road just past the Princeville shopping center as you're heading west. This is one of the most photographed viewpoints on Kauai. It is such easy access, just pull off the road to the scenic parking area. A patchwork quilt of taro fields dominates the foreground, with the squares of taro and marshes creating a unique photo opportunity. Taro has been cultivated by Hawaiians for centuries. Poi is a traditional Hawaiian dish with a unique flavor and pale purple coloring, often served with poke. Most of the poi produced and sold in Hawaii comes from this valley. The backdrop of beautiful mountains with waterfalls tumbling down the walls is almost too beautiful to put into words. Be sure to bring your camera for some fantastic photographs. Stop here for an out of this world view. I really felt like I was somewhere in Asia when looking at this spot. It's right off the highway, and people don't stay long as it's only a view. Not much else to do here. However, it's an amazing view and worth the stop. Kauai is a beautiful island and this view exemplifies that. read more

Any time we saw a lookout spot while driving, we stopped because we didn't want to miss out on the amazing views. They have signs along the road that indicated a lookout was coming up to alert you of when to stop. There was a small parking area on the side of the road that looked like it could accommodate about 6-7 cars maybe. This is definitely one you want to stop at and snap some pics. The views were amazing all over the island and this one did not disappoint. Seeing all the mountains, valleys, & waterfalls in the mountains was beautiful. Lesson of the Day: If you see a sign that says "Scenic Lookout" in Kauai, then by all means, pull over. It'll be worth it! I had no idea what I had been missing each time I bypassed those signs! It's right across the street from Foodland. After picking up my lot of fruit for the evening, I decided to stop for a minute, curious to see what everyone was cooing at. Whoa, wow. Gorgeous. Pictures don't do it justice for one minute. Beautiful, perfectly manicured taro plantation. Geez. Stop and take it in. Your soul will thank you. read more

Great viewpoint on the mauka (mountain) side of Highway 56 at Princeville. Much of Hawai'i's commercial production of taro, made into poi and chips, takes place here. It is believed that taro has been grown here since at least the year 700. Namolokama Mountain is visible in the background. read more

Free, quick, and easy stop along the main highway near the St. Regis where the mile marker resets to 0. You'll see a "scenic lookout" sign, and just after that, a turnout where you can park on the mountain side of the road. There were lots of chickens (and baby chicks!) hanging out in the parking area... they're all over the island! The view of the valley is gorgeous, with green fields (of taro I think) backed by sloping mountains. We took about 10 minutes to snap pictures and smile at the baby chicks and then headed on our way. read more

A small lookout (more like a a big turnout) with a beautiful view of taro fields. There's room for maybe 5 cars. Go around sunset if you can - while you won't actually see the sun set, the lighting at this time is gorgeous. Definitely stop on your way to Hanalei (or way back back from Hanalei)! read more

This is certainly one of the best "pull off the road" scenic views we've done but don't get this confused with a more complete experience on Kauai of the spectacular Waimea Canyon drive. As others have said pull off for 10 mins and snap some pictures since it is beautiful. read more

Love this lookout overlooking the taro fields! If you plan to go here just know that it's easy to miss! It's right across from the Foodland if that helps. There aren't clear parking spots and it doesn't hold a lot of cars, maybe 7 at the max. It's worth turning into if you are a tourist just passing by to get to another town though! read more
