I ordered seed from Hancock seed. I had an idea of what I was looking for and wanted a product that was mostly seed and not less than 50 % seed. Well browsing through their site I found a common Bermuda seed. It seemed to be the ONLY one that had a picture of a product label. It stated 98% percent seed , great I thought. I will order this and prepare my own soil. I get my order and it is not even 50% seed. I realize that I ordered a coated seed but they clearly show a product that is different. That's fraud to a customer that is not familiar with all the ins and outs of grass seed. I called and the gentleman I spoke to was useless. A stock generic picture he said. No it's really not. If it's not the product you are supplying then don't group them together. So now they want me to pay to return the product and pay a 20% restocking fee. It's personally not worth my time to do so and lose the money in the process. Do yourself a favor and buy from a local farm store. They get a lot of their products from the same suppliers that Hancock gets their seed from. Very disappointed. I thought I'd support this business instead of a big box store. They treated me even more poorly and their return policy is a joke. read more

I ordered and received 75# of grass seed. My lawn service only used 50# When I inquired about returning the unopened bag I did not need I was advised of a 20% restocking fee us shipping. I had expected to pay for shipping but the 20% seemed more like a punitive deterrent. read more

I am very disappointed in the product that Hancock Seed sold me. The very nice and informative salesmen upsold me to a hardier variety that produced less then a 1% yield after aggressive prep work for over-seeding project, very careful application (warm days and warm nights in Charleston SC, daily watering for the first week and very other for the next 2-3 weeks.... NADA... nothing came in.. I even dropped above the recommend rate and used some Pennington seed that I had left over from last year and that stuff germinated and took off to fill the small area that used it. Nothing from the very expensive hauled and coated crap that Hancock Seed sold me. And to top it off, they never responded to any of my emails asking what went wrong, what should I have done differently etc...etc... no apologies, nothing...just like thier seed. After I placed 10lbs. of seed on properly prepared and fertilized turf in conjunction with a test pan, watered every day other than rain days for a month. You then have the audacity to imply it's my fault, that's absurd when not one seed germinated. Then to offer a 20% discount on more of the same, that's the earmark of extremely poor customer satisfaction. No doubt you'll soon discover there's a problem with that lot number although I'm certain you could care less. There's always social media for firms of this nature. read more

BOTTOM LINE IS DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!! This is my first truly negative experience with this company. I used their grass seed successfully the last 3 years and now I had zero germination in the 50-pound Titan RX Turf Type Tall Fescue Grass Seed, costing $220. I worked two days preparing the soil, raking, seeding the yard and spreading 7 cubic yards of top soil. After 4 weeks of watering, based on their instructions, I contacted Hancock Seed to let them know my zero germination issue. The representative sent me a questionnaire, see below. "Hancock Seed stands by its products, and is happy to assist you if you are dissatisfied with your purchase. Please fill out this brief claim form below as well as remit pictures of the seeded area to let us know what you experienced so we can better assist you with the issues you had. When did you plant the seed? About 5 weeks ago I purchased 10#'s of Centipede seed. With high hopes, I broadcasted the seed and uses a spring rake to get it below the soil grade. The weather was dry so I diligently watered. After three weeks I contacted Handcock technical support. I literally DID NOT SEE ONE SPROUT. I was told I planted the seed too deep the the grass died under the soil layer. I purchased some food plot seed from Hancock Seed for use on a small portion of my ranch. When I opened the seed bag to plant it, I was almost overcome with the dust within the bag. Closer observation revealed that the light brown dust prevailed in a copious amount throughout the entire bag of seed. Nonetheless, I went ahead and spread the seed. It was like spreading lime on a windy day with the dust billowing out in a large cloud. I have serious concerns whether this seed will even germinate but we can always hope. I sent an email to Hancock Seed expressing my concerns but they have not given the courtesy of a reply. I have used seed from many vendors and this was the absolute worse. As others have noted, I do not expect a favorable response and neither should you if you buy their seed. Fool me once....... read more

Something changed here as of 06/29/21 as I've previously bought from this merchant and had no issues. I even sent other's there to purchase from them. NOT ANY MORE! The customer service is lacking a little something, such as customer service. I canceled a pending two hundred dollar order for centipede [3" x 3" pads] after untimely discovery that the facts stated at the time of purchase [paypal] were at best unreliable as to when to expect shipment and delivery. Suffice it to say I'm not going to argue with anyone who don't want my money based upon their OWN terms of sale. I have also since informed those I previously sent to the merchant of this glaring disputable set of facts. I'm not eating anything about the order and I'm not going to dispute before the UNTIMELY (pursuant to their own statements made at the time of purchase) shipment and ultimate delivery. I urge you to be informed before you commit to buying a living item from them only to discover that when you get it that it isn't even worth the time to plant it. I ordered the Argentine Bahia Grass mix. The website says 75% coated bahia grass and 25% brown top millet. That is technically correct although misleading. What you actually receive is 25% bahia grass and 35% brown top millet. Because the bahia is coated, they are saying that it is 75% by weight. Only after receiving the package, does it show that the package is mostly brown top millet and inert matter. read more

Ordered seed from them the first time and all went well. The second time I ordered I spoke with someone from the company as I was making a large order. Got half way through the seed and it's dead- no growth. Called the company and they said there is a test date on the bag (6/21) and I ordered it in March 2022. It is only good for nine months after the test date- I had to learn the hard way even though they communicated with me and sent me a large order they didn't ask how soon I would use it or tell me I only had three months to finish it off. I use it to grow barley fodder for chickens so I use a bag every other month. They should have educated me. When I called to ask about the seed they realized I bought 100 pounds and have to throw half of it away since it had been tested six months before I bought it and they didn't care. I tried 5 lb of soybeans from Hancoc. it said 98% will geminate, but it turned out only about 20%.do not suggest

Purchased 60lbs total of the Argentine coated Bahia grass and used 50lbs on an area a little over 3200 square feet and got zero Bahia but tons of weeds I had never had before. I mean weeds that none of my neighbors have and I had never even seen before. Used 10lbs on an area next to my drive and covered with Scott's lawn soil and once again I had zero Bahia grow. This company with offer a "discount" next season but don't waste your money. read more

Not sure what Ray B. did wrong but I can almost guarantee its nothing to do with the quality of seed Hancock sells. The company was great to deal with start to finish. Before I ever even purchased any seed they talked to me over the phone and gave me plenty of helpful advice. I ended up buying argentine Bahia. It was either seed or sod and since this was the cheaper alternative I decided to try it first. I basically started with a lawn that was primarily weeds. In addition I had a few big uneven spots. So the first thing I did was scalp the lawn(mow it as short as possible). Then I dethatched it and leveled it. I spread the 16-4-08 starter fertilizer that I also purchased from Hancock followed by the seed. Prior to planting the seed I also repaired my sprinkler system for the area I was planting. I completely redid the layout to get the best coverage I could. This is important because these seeds need to stay moist in order to germinate. I started in early spring and the change in my lawn is drastic. I'm very impressed with the germination from these seeds. As a side note I didn't follow their instructions. I didn't rake the seed into the soil but instead I came back and top dressed it very lightly. Maybe 1/4" deep at most but you could still sort of see most of the seeds. 2 weeks later the seeds were sprouting up all over. The appearance of the grass is good. It's got a nice wide blade and is darker than my neighbors which I think is mostly weeds and pensecola Bahia. I just sent my before/after pics to Hancock seed so they should be on the web site soon for you to see for yourself the difference. I would highly recommend this type of grass if sod is out of the budget or you don't want all the labor involved with diy sod. And I would definitely recommend Hancock for the seed. Overall I'm extremely satisfied with the quality of the seed and the company. 5 stars for both. read more

After the bahia and burmuda grasses died because of the shade from my fences, Hancock recommended seville augustine plugs. When they arrived, the plugs were pretty and green. They were half dead when I finally found the time to plant them. 2 years later, there is a beautiful, thick, lush, green carpet-like covering where the other grasses failed, and they are spreading. Very poor quality seed, doesn't germinate, and conditions have been good for pensacola seed. Ordered 4 boxes (200lbs) put doen 125 lbs on an area of around 17000 sqft. Watered daily twice a day for 70 days, and not a single germinated seed of bahia. Company does not provide instruction on the bag, in the box, nor do they provide a 8.5x11 sheet of paper telling you to go online for the instructions. Basically put unless you hit exactly their latitude of how to sow the seed you are SOL on a refund, their gaurantee makes sure of that. Stay far far away from this company and their seed. Their cistomer service leaves a lot to be desired as well. Save your money and shop somewhere else. read more

My credit card was charged immediately for an item they didn't even have. I cancelled the order after eleven days, because I needed to seed the yard. Customer Service is very knowledgeable and very helpful and really, really nice! After reading their listing on the BBB website, it was apparent how much Hancock Seed was focused on customer satisfaction, so after my husband called them and sought their advice, he placed an order for 50# of Bahia Mix to fill in large areas of dead grass. Oh wait, I forgot to mention the FREE SHIPPING. We received the grass seed expeditiously, however it sat in our garage for over two months, while we waited for the stars to be perfectly aligned so my husband could aerate the lawn before spreading the grass seed. :D It's been 10 days since that magic moment arrived and guess what, the bahia mix is growing and growing, to the point it now has to be mowed. I purchased 480+ dollars worth of seed, mostly Yukon and Riviera trying to reno our yard. Unfortunately, the day after I seeded, we had a major washout from an unexpected storm. I remember the flood down the street while driving home thinking "I hate weather forecasters." The rain trenched out sections all over the yard and washed out and displaced 80-90 percent of the seed. Some has since grown seedlings in very patchy areas where the straw, seed and soil came to rest. I cannot afford to buy more expensive seed and my wife would kill me if I did so she suggested I email them and ask if there was anything they could do. Now I know this was not their fault in any sense of the word, however I have dealt with very respectable companies who take care of their customers and its been nearly a week and they have not responded. You would think they would at least email back with a note of sympathy for me. Its still a little early to judge the product by the service from this company was extremely disappointing. I really didnt think it was much to ask for a large company to simply send a little extra seed out to mix with the remaining seed so that I might at least get close to the recommended coverage in our yard. I ended up buying some Timber property in north Florida and decided that I wanted to put in some food plots. After doing all kinds of research and speaking to some knowledgeable hunters, I ended up buying various seeds from Hancock. The results have been spectacular. Their Deer Greens mixes, and various other seeds have done great. However, we haven't missed a step either in taking soil samples, putting down the proper amounts of Lime and fertilizer either. Controlling the weeds has also been critical to the success of the seeds. So, the results have been excellent and I recommend them highly. I ordered midnight Kentucky bluegrass and it was sent to Nebraska when i opened package they were out of Midnight kbg so they sent wildhorse Kentucky blue grass seed with out offering me a refund or a different product. I inquired about the characteristics of wildhorse seed and there was no reviews nor was there any of the seed even advertised on there web site, all they could tell me was that it wasn't as dark green as the midnight seed. It seems if you don't live near by they scam you with there no name grass seed knowing it will cost to much to send back. This is a dishonest company and i wouldn't recommend to anyone. read more

The Buffalo seed that I got from this company is phenomenal. I planted a week and a half ago and have excellent germination... the customer service on the other hand was terrible. I got a notification my item had shipped when it did not and was never notified the tracking number was invalid due to a mistake on their end. I called and talked to an employee that was rude about it and was told I would get a phone call/tracking number and was never sent to me, until I followed back up with them. I may give them another shot but my first experience was a horrible one. But got to give props to the quality of the seed. read more

One acre of dwarf corn planted as food plot, got four ears of corn, all the rest were just stalks. The corn planted next to it produced 220 bushels an acre. No refund , no guarantee. They sell bad seed and don't care if it fails since you have already paid. read more

I would never recommend grass seed from Hancock Seed Company. I bought your product Pennington Triangle Bermuda Grass Seed and had absolutely no results. I had two spots in my yard that I wanted to grow Bermuda grass in Spot 1 and Spot 2. I aerated, tiled, and fertilized both spots. I watered both spots 3 times a day for a month. I planted the seed at the end of May, which is perfect weather in Tennessee to plant Bermuda. In spot 1 which is in the main part of the yard, I planted the Triangle Bermuda Grass Seed and for over a month did not see a single seed germinate. In spot 2, I planted Scotts Turf Builder Bermuda grass seed, and I saw the seed germinate in a week. Additionally, after not seeing any of the Triangle Bermuda Grass Seed germinate after a month in Spot 1, I tried Scotts Turf Builder Bermuda seed and success after a week I started to see the Scotts Bermuda germinate. The Scotts Turf Builder Bermuda grass seed is also about half of the cost. Hancock says on their website that they do not hold a warrant on any of their grass seeds, which is very disappointing as I just threw away over $80. Not sure as this is your product if Pennington can do anything. I have been very pleased with other Pennington products (seed, fertilizer, weed killer, etc.) but just do not understand that lack of quality with the Pennington Triangle Bermuda Grass Seed I purchased. read more
