While here this past weekend for my 8th tattoo at Hand of Glory since December of 2019, a couple saw the studio's request for customers to leave reviews on Yelp or Google. Far be it from me to begrudge a couple's inside jokes or bits, but they went on a little too long about the type of person who writes Yelp reviews. So for them, and for Hand of Glory which has quickly become my tattoo home, I'll do my best to review both our experiences. The husband left to go get his haircut, and because only the person with the appointment is allowed in, because this shop is great at carrying out health protocols that make all of us that walk through the door feel safe. The wife, who was getting tattooed, worked with Dave - who I believe is new to the shop, but he was great at talking with her about her concept, and she seemed really happy with how it turned out! That's all for my creepy third hand review. For me, it was my 8th with the shop, and 7th with Jim Gentry. I love working with Jim. We have a great rapport and I probably have an even split of custom work, and work from his flash that I have pointed at (or digitally pointed at) and said "YES. This. I need this now." Jim has an amazing style, and is incredibly knowledgeable about the history of this art. Hand of Glory itself presents a great view of the history of the craft in its decor, while reflecting the modern safety sensibilities of tattooing during a pandemic. I've been in 5 times during the past year, and each time I've felt incredibly safe, without feeling like there was added stress on me as a client. Not sure if I'm updating/removing this review properly, (on the app, sorry!) In response to that: You can call it micromanaging, and I clearly hit a nerve, but the purple and blue blobs look awful, I know it was my first, but they're not even filled in. There are plenty of micro-tattoos that don't look like this. I used pretentious because "we stand by our reputation" is a little rude/passive for an immediate response to a first time customer, but I understand getting defensive. You said you have 30 years of the opposite rep and that's amazing! Good for you guys:) I guess that's why I was a little surprised by these results. I brought up my other experiences as a comparison. I was able to work with them using (what I considered) communication. Apparently in your case it's "nitpicking" and "confusion". Luckily I didn't "sabotage" my own tattoo with that. As another rebuttal to your accusation, they were able to change something halfway through too (by their own recommendation), from what I had originally wanted. But you're right, you should have absolutely declined if you couldn't do it and I'd have respected that. Luckily I found someone who did/could, so thank you for the half apology and retouch offer. I did thank you for being accommodating with booking my appointment so soon, I never said booking with you was ever an issue, and the appointment was nice, you were all super nice and I felt comfortable. I tried to specify that it's the results I'm not happy with, so no need to try and use that against me either :) I could have brought up how you wrote "I can see how that's not what you asked for" but there was no need. I was shopping around for a place to get my first tattoo done when my sister suggested Hand of Glory. I looked into the shop itself and was impressed with all of their resident artists, as well as the reviews on Yelp. I walked in the next day to see if I could schedule a consultation with Ron Mor, one of their resident artists. The shop is immaculate and run very well; I was greeted by two very nice staff members who helped me get a consultation and appointment for that afternoon. I met with Ron, who was incredibly nice from the start and more than willing to do my tattoo. He put my fears at ease and made getting my first tattoo not only a breeze but a great experience overall. Ron is a top-notch artist and it took him under a half hour to do my tattoo and it's absolutely gorgeous. While the tattoo I got is simple text, his other works (@ronmortattoos on Instagram) show his incredible talent for portraits and practically everything else you could think of. After the job was done, since my blood sugar was real low, he had me lay on the table for a little while, and gave me a piece of candy and a cup of water to help. After resting a bit, I went home with a beautiful piece of artwork on my arm. It's sort of tough to know where to begin with this review. All I can say is that I stood outside of the shop (was going to see if the team had availability for a walk-in) for about 20 minutes because I was so nervous to walk in. I think I had an unconscious bias that I wasn't "cool enough" or "tough enough" to walk in to a tattoo shop and just ask for a tattoo. It was the smiling faces and friendly demeanor of the artists inside (yes, I creepily popped my head in the window to try and muster up the courage to just open the damn door) that made me just go in. I was greeted, so incredibly kindly by Peter Vincent who was not only patient and made me feel comfortable being new to the shop and not sure that I was ready for my first tattoo but he was also so professional that I knew I was in good hands. I think we forget sometimes that a tattoo is also a medical procedure and the process Hand of Glory has in place really puts your mind at ease and makes you feel taken care of and very much safe. So lets get to the tattoo, Peter draws up what I was interested in, shows me and collects feedback from me (I LOVED it and didn't want to change a thing!) then kindly shared next steps through each phase of the process to manage my expectations and anxiety. I think there is a lot of impact in "I am going to do X now, it will take X minutes, then we will do X." Once he is all set up and ready to go, I walk back to a very welcoming (and I repeat, NON JUDGEMENTAL space!) and Peter directs me to our space and where I will lay down. Here I am, laying down with my pants down (tattoo ended up on my upper leg) in a space full of other artists and customers and yet I felt so incredibly safe. I think it goes without saying that there were no leering eyes or even so much as a glance that made an anxious person like me feel nervous. I truly loved that part of the experience. Tattooing is about to start, Peter talks me through the importance of breathing, how to make myself comfortable and of course, to let him know if I need a break. Somehow, once he started I didn't feel much pain at all. I was oddly so relaxed and so comfortable that I was more focused on that feeling rather than the feeling of the tattoo. It was obvious that I was in good hands and Peter really knew his stuff. Even though I didn't ask for it, Peter was thoughtful enough to ask if I needed a break and how I was feeling about halfway through. I was fine though so we kept on rollin! Tattoo is done! It is beautiful and perfect and everything I wanted and MORE. Peter gives me some privacy to get dressed and meets me up front to ask any questions I may have and pay. Again, an incredible transaction. Peter thoughtfully describes aftercare verbally, then provides me with a little card with aftercare directions, thanks me and shakes my hand. I have gotten a couple of tattoos done here, both of them by Ron Mor. Most recently, I got a half sleeve done of an Eastern Asian style Dragon on my left upper arm. Amazingly enough, Ron proceeded to show me a wide range of dragon art pieces that he had worked on, and they were all exquisite! Not sure if it's because I'm of Asian descent but I saw that his artwork showed a true connection to the cultural feeling behind the drawing (I hope that I'm making sense here, it's hard to explain!). After several visits spanning across a few months, Ron had finished my tattoo, and I'm totally in love with it. Though I was raised in a WASPy, Republican enclave of Orange County, CA... I learned that there are some experiences and sentiments that can only be worn on your flesh: tributes of ink and blood. And taxidermy - we'll get to that later. I visited both locations that Hand of Glory Tattoo has on a hip stretch of 7th Ave; both are intimate, irreverent and redolent with Apocalyptic imagery that was intriguing and also gave me flashbacks to Sunday School lessons + my fascination with Hieronymus Bosch in college art classes. I'm not sure if I had an epiphany or need to see a therapist, but Hand of Glory is provocative in a good way. The first location was booked with advance appointments and they politely directed me to their other studio, just a short stroll away. The studio is colorful but not kitsch, edgy without being obnoxious. The bench in the reception area is... Quaker-esque and while I appreciated the austere irony, my bum would have preferred a Stressless Recliner, in red leather, if you please. The artists are patient and technically exacting, which appeals to me. There was a little back and forth with what gauge needle and technique would be utilized... and an observant constructive (?) criticism of one of my existing pieces which made me bristle for a few minutes. But at the end of the day, I think we both decided that we were right... plus, I couldn't - nay - wouldn't revise that piece, under any circumstances. The artist was accommodating and went out of her way (I apologize for forgetting her name) to set me at ease and drafted several versions of what I wanted. The result was precise, sharp lines and sans irritation; minimal sloughing as to be expected. Okay: taxidermy - that did weird me out just a bit, but made the experience that much more memorable. I did see and smell food in the clinical areas, which I didn't love, but WTB: it's Brooklyn! I am pleased with the art and grateful for the opportunity to commemorate a significant event in my life. I wanted something from the artwork of my all time favorite record. I brought him the LP jacket - which he scanned into the computer, edited in Photoshop, and took exactly what I wanted from the artwork to create the stencil. The lines are crisp, the color is bold and it makes me smile every time I look at my arm. He was really patient, careful and put on an excellent selection of music for us. Second time around, I got one of HoG's $30 Script Specials. This is a fantastic deal that I've been telling all my friends about. You can get up to five letters done in freehand script (body locations vary, such as no hands or neck) for $30. Call them up for more details. It's a great deal if you're looking for a cheap, quality tattoo fix. Hand of Glory is a gem of a shop, conveniently located in my favorite neighborhood. Ron was such a cool dude, and it was so easy to remain calm despite the fact that it was my largest piece to date. He gave me lollipops and water and talked about my favorite movie (A League of Their Own) with me the whole time. Sure, it hurt but after it was over it wasn't sore at all. It didn't bleed. Cool guys, nice vibe and great work. Came to get my third tattoo from the artists at HOG/EIN because my sister had been to End is Near three times before, and we knew the place was clean and the artists were talented. My sister and I went on Wednesday last week to End is Near to talk with some artists. The person to greeted us (shop manager perhaps?) was brief but nice enough, and when the artists at EIN were busy, sent us down to Hand of Glory a block or two away, which is their sister shop. We talked with Nash, said what we wanted, and scheduled the two appointments for Saturday at 1pm. We each put down $100 (the minimum). On Saturday we came in at 1 and Nash was just starting my stencil. Angus, who did my sister's tattoo, was working on her drawing but was almost done. Angus started working on my sister around 1:15-1:30pm but mine didn't get started until after 2pm. Nash apologized for running late. When my drawing was done we got set up and ended up having to reposition the stencil on my arm four times. Once everything was looking good, the tattoo didn't take that long at all. My sister and I were the only ones getting tattooed for most of the time we were there, but there were four guys/artists as well, and we had brought a friend. The whole vibe was really chill and they were playing good music. All of the guys were super nice and welcoming. The reason why I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the wait when I arrived. It wasn't a huge deal, but I did go in a few days in advance and the tattoo was not that complicated, so I just assumed it would be ready to go when I arrived at 1pm. But, I am looking forward to getting more work done here in the future! read more

Hand of Glory is just what the name says. I went to HOG in the beginning of 2021 with the idea of fixing a 20 year piece that was in very bad shape along with scar tissue. I met David Sinor who goes by Wizard Shaft on IG & let me say he's earned that name! I'm writing this review towards the fall of 2021 and today I have two Bad Ass sleeves all done by the Wizard! I constantly get stopped in the streets of NYC to receive compliments about them; Colors, Styles, Images, etc. The Wizard is a true artist to his nature, he would listen to your concept (no matter what style of tattoos) of what you want and then he would do magic in a way that only a Wizard could do by incorporating the client idead and his artistic creativity. When I say vague, I mean it. I literally sent Dusty a song and random desert images that spoke to me. He came up with a stunningly detailed and truly original work of art for me. During the tattooing process, he was very considerate of my comfort, always reminding me we could take breaks whenever I felt I needed it. I felt very comfortable with Dusty and around the whole staff. Considering I laid on a table with my butt exposed for about 8 hours, that says they're cool people.
