I made the appt with a reasonable deposit & received a confirmation call the day prior. When I arrived, I only waited about 10 mins. I was glad to have some time to look around since the walls are filled with artwork & installations. (The shop is gorgeous! - High ceilings, nice furnishing, wooden floors, 2 floors). Everyone i met was friendly. Cheeks is so nice! We played with the size of my tattoo design until we settled on what looked right and he went to work. Fourth time's the charm, apparently. Tattoo #4 was my first color one and the most detailed, so I wanted to make sure I got it right. Leathernecks got it all right. The space is super chill. There's a big old doggo lazing around, and they play loud hip hop. Everyone was pretty cool to talk to. Last August, I went to Dan Bones at Leathernecks with an idea for a tattoo. I wanted an anatomical line drawing of the top of a foot, around 3x4". Before I decided on Dan as an artist, I did some research and I really liked his style. I knew it was perfect for my art. We talked, Dan agreed to work on a stencil, and I booked an appointment for a few weeks later. Dan had the unique stencil ready to go. This was my first tattoo, and he put me at ease. He suggested a slight adjustment with the placement that I think was for the best. He did great careful work and was easy to chat with. After an hour or so of work, I was done. I got a spur-of-the-moment tattoo when I was 21 and I've wanted to get it covered since the day after I got it. That was 18 years ago. The tattoo was a thick black kanji and I was afraid that I would have to get more black put on top to cover it. I visited Oogie at Leathernecks because she did an amazing tattoo on my friend. I had told her I wanted a hot air balloon. Oogie came up with the great idea for a watercolor, steampunk hot air balloon and we quickly looked through some pics online for ideas. I left my deposit that night and made an appointment for 2 months later. When I got to the shop, the day of my appointment, Oogie showed me what she came up with and I loved it! It was colorful and she managed to blend the old tattoo into the new one so no one could tell it was a coverup. Even though Oogie did not have a heavy hand, I was shaking and spasming pretty soon after she started. I think the location on my back was just very sensitive. Oogie was really patient with me and assured me that it was ok. She moved me into positions that would help with the spasms and we took breaks when needed. I think this is my last tattoo but if I ever change my mind, I would definitely visit Oogie again. I've been telling recommending her to friends who are looking to get new/coverup tattoos. read more

I had been trying to figure out for quite some time now was I wanted my cover up tattoo to be. I was referred to Oogie by a friend and my God I was not disappointed. Her work is absolutely superb! They're awesome! By far the nicest, most accommodating staff of any tattoo shop I've been in. They renovated sometime last year so the shop itself is really nice as well. Also Ludo, the sweetest dog, is there pretty often, which is obviously a bonus. As for the one star review about wait time; some tattoo artists have waits (usually a good sign), I guarantee you someone else in the shop could have done it sooner if that's what they wanted, and how you can leave a one star review about a shop when you knew exactly what you were getting into when you spoke with the artist in the first place is beyond me. I got a tattoo here last night, it was my seventh tattoo and this was by far the best experience I had with a tattoo parlor. From the beginning, they were very professional. I had to schedule a consultation at which Oogie was incredibly thorough. The shop is beautiful, clean, funky and basically functions as an art gallery with some very cool pieces to admire while you wait. There is a gremlin in the waiting area. Extra points for that! The woman at the front desk is also very accomodating (And has a great sense of style). Everyone there is informative and communicative, which is so important and much appreciated. Great customer service. Oogie took her time with me at both the consultation and the actual visit. She told me everything I would need to know. After my consultation my appointment wasn't for another two months (& they required a $100 to reserve the spot.) but they let me know there was a cancellation and I got in around a month later. She worked with me in finding a good image, the appropriate size and the best placement. She considered all aspects so that I would love the final product, which I did! They had a great setup so that I could be tattooed privately. The price is well worth the investment. This is one of the few shops where I walked in without feeling uncomfortable because the staff was not pretentious at all. Now that I found a place I feel comfortable at I will likely be back sooner rather than later. Better to pay cash if you have it, but with a card you can add the tip right on and get the receipt emailed or texted you. read more

Followed G here from another shop and was surprised to find Leathernecks is a great set up with several spot on artists. When I lived in the neighborhood the name of the shop made me think it'd be a cheesy flash joint (Hellhounds was the original name), I get the military theme with the naming, but it just didn't inspire me. If you have any doubts from the outside, head in and check out the space and the artists and they'll soon disappear. G's style is true to his fine art work, water color with a subtle Japanese influence, bold lines and muted colors. He's incredibly talented and I'd trust him with any style of piece, though my suggestion with any great tattoo artist is to seek them out for the work they really love to do. Started a half sleeve here and I can't wait to finish it up. G's rate here is $180/hr, not sure if that's the shop norm or not. All walks seem to come here, flash walk in's to big custom piece people, and there are some seriously talented artists for custom work. read more

This experience was back in March but I am still incredibly happy with my tattoo work done here! I went in just for a consultation kinda thing but ended up getting my tat done that same day. Oogie was unbelievably patient with me and so helpful, editing the image I wanted and the font of the words around it. The process was so quick yet professional and not at all uncomfortable (as my past tat experiences were). Started my half sleeve outline only tattoo here with Marlo recommended by a good friend of mine and i AM IN LOVE WITH MY TATTOO! I'm going back soon to finish this in April. People here are really nice. I had an appointment right when the shop opened that day and seeing all the artists come in and talk to each other, order each other food- it gave me a really homey feeling. I went alone for my three hour long tattoo session so feeling comfortable is really important to me. Marlo is really good and super friendly. I have gotten so many compliments on his line work and so many people have asked me where and who I've gotten it from! I had my scaffold/industrial piercing done here in 2014. It was a total impulse decision and I was a walk in along with my friend who got an upper cartilage piercing to add her to her collection. We were seen to within 10 minutes with both done by the same piercer. We had a good chat with the receptionist there too, which was nice. I love the interior of this place, with the brick walls it just looks so Brooklyn. The scaffold piercing was pretty intensely painful, taking about ten minutes altogether from placement to finish. I can't tell you if this was appropriately painful, but from what I've read online this kind of pain is to be expected, so I think the piercer did a good job. There is a tiny scar on my ear from where the needle must have slipped and cut the skin, but it's quite unnoticeable. The threading of the jewellery itself is probably the most painful part, as your ear is seriously swollen from having the two piercings done at the same time. There is also the characteristic little pop from each entry. The healing of this piercing was pretty rough, if I'm honest. Aside from neglecting it the first three days or so (I was travelling home to Ireland), I did my best to take care of it, but it was really about 9 months to a year before it really settled down. I found the only thing to help it was to simply leave it completely alone, aside from very gentle cleaning of any clotting. The less you touch it the better. It's still painful if I sleep on it all night. However I don't regret getting it and I'm glad I got it done here. read more

First off, I have to say that I am not a "reviewer" unless absolutely satisfied. This review is for a spontaneous trip after brunch with my family. We walked in a little before closing and were welcomed by Mikey with the awesome 'stache (also a cutie pie, btw). He accommodated us so close to closing time with no problem. Mikey is super sweet and funny! He is also patient and creative. He took his time with all four of us. We never felt rushed and he took his time with each one of us. Even when we asked his opinion on what we wanted, he showed and mentioned ideas of what would look good. We all got exactly what we wanted. All 4 tattoos were clean and done beautifully. Came here back in January for a conch piercing. A woman with pink hair pierced my ears and she had such a fun persona. She didn't mind when I kept asking her to adjust the piercing angle. The shop was clean as I believe they did a new renovation and had sterilized tools. There was a family getting a tattoo in the chair next to me and it looked pretty nice. The price I believe for the piercing was 30 bucks, 10 dollars cheaper than what I paid for in Manhattan. I liked how she recommended how I should clean my ears and even offered to tighten my tragus earring. I would recommend this shop. Perhaps if I have room for another ear piercing or decide to have a tattoo I will consider this shop again. read more

So first time actually creating an acct for yelp , used it plenty of times before but Created it so I can leave a no b.s honest review of this business. No favors for anyone nothing ... I'm a real customer with more tattoos than I can count and about 80 % of them from leathernecks. Would have been all my tattoos had I know about this place sooner. Here's a list of what has impressed me and kept me coming back again and again : 1. Very clean shop ( this is huge... if you're wondering ) 2. The staff is very professional here... No pressure on getting you in or pushing you out the door , and your questions get answered 3. *** the work is well worth any wait from any artist ( if they're booked ) or if you can walk in and there's an opening ... take it !! Most of my work is done by @cris_element from the shop. Just 1 example of the staff they have there , the dudes work is crazy, he's impressed me enough I've had over 19 sessions at the shop from a full sleeve to small pieces to and entire chest tattoo ... ( yea i said the same thing when i actualy counted it up lol ) with him and still working on a new leg sleeve. I was disappointed in this place, since I was considering another piercing and live nearby. I came in to buy a simple replacement nose stud when my previous one fell out. The staff was preoccupied with a conversation amongst themselves when I came in and looked up at me, but didn't say that they'd be a minute nor verbally acknowledge me. I was generally ok with this, and waited around a bit. Finally, an employee came over and asked what I was looking for. When I told her, she offered a nose bone that I told her was a few gauges too small. She told me that all nose piercings are the same size (not only is that not true, but as if I didn't know my own piercing gauge), insisted it would be fine, and also said that "my nose would shrink". Maybe, after a long-ass time. But wouldn't I want to prevent that anyway? I unfortunately bought the nose bone because I didn't realize other and seemingly better piercing shops were nearby; it indeed fell right out and was a waste. I think it was a combination of her not caring, cajoling me into buying something when she knew other shops nearby may have what I need, being dismissive and acting as if she had no knowledge of something she is supposedly trained to deal with that will make sure I never get a piercing there. read more
