WARNING!!!!! Do NOT hire Joe for door installation. If you don't want to read the story, just look at the pictures below. We hired Joe to convert a short cubby-hole storage door to a full size/walk-in door. This required moving the header wood up and installing a pre-hung door. He did not move the original header up. He just placed a 2x4 as the door frame top which is not even supported by the "jack/trimmer" studs. He also did not use new wood for the "jack/trimmer" studs (see diagram below for proper construction). He left gaps where the old header was located and filled in with pieces of wood. Jack/Trimmer studs are supposed to be one piece. He also left a diagonal wall brace hanging after he cut it. All of this was discovered after he left when we did research on how this job should have been done properly. None of the frame work above would ever pass a construction inspection. He claimed we did not hire him to do frame work, only hang a door. However, the job and request clearly stated the door header needed to be moved up to install a new walk-in/full size door. As for the new door itself.... When Joe "finished" the work, I came over to review the job. The door was completely warped in the frame and not closing properly. He tried to blame this on the original framing. After having to press him on the result, he begrudgingly reworked the pre-hung door. Now the door closed okay, but the gaps around the door we're all off. He then blamed it on the "cheap" pre-hung door. Prehung doors are near perfectly aligned by default, the gaps were off because I later learned he did not use shims between the prehung door frame and the house framing. I pressed him again about the gaps and he was very agitated but used screws of various tightness to make the gaps look better. This caused the jamb to separate (shown in images). In the end, the door is still crooked and gaps are off, it's also not level. He also botched the door trim which was falling off the frame/not properly attached around the edges. To hide the major flaws, he boogered on a ton of caulk. I had to press him on these issues too. At least the trim was no longer falling off/insuffiently attached when he left, but it looks horrendous. Sanding and painting isn't going to correct the mis-alignment issues. At this point he was just in a great big hurry to leave. Bottom line, there was ZERO pride in his workmanship. He just did not care and was annoyed when clear problems were pointed out. We're not being nitpicky at all...everything was done completely wrong after talking to another handyman/contractor. As it turns out, Joe is a member of "Backed by Yelp Guaranteed"....we had to file a claim with them because he would not respond to any communications after the fact. Yelp is returning the money we paid Joe so we can have someone come out and correct the job. I'm not sure he has installed a lot of shower doors but the first time he came and installed it, he put the doors on backwards, left a few pieces behind that needed to be installed, and left a lot of silicone for us to scrape off. I would like to start by saying I REALLY hate leaving negative reviews (check my profile), but I guess I don't have much of a choice here. I reached out to several handy men to get an estimate for installing a prehung door. I expressed to Joe I wanted the door and frame replaced. He assured me I did not need to replace the frame if it was the same size door, which it was. I am not the handyman, so I took his word for it. Specifically, I told him I was OK with either option, so long as it was done right. He gave me a low cost (which wound up being more) and told me he could come out that weekend to do the job in a couple hours. I should have known he was trying to squeeze me in for a quick buck; however, against my better judgement, I trusted his opinion due to his great reviews. I was not present when he came, as I was out of town. He was mostly dealing with my wife in my absence. My wife was not really happy about the job, as she could tell it was off, but did not want to be confrontational. When I got back home I immediately realized the job was not done right. The door was in the frame crooked (see pictures) and, as a result, the deadbolt was not throwing correctly. As it stands now, you have to press the door into the frame to lock it. To me, neither of those things make it, "done right" and I am certain Joe wouldn't have installed a door like that at his house. I tried texting him several times to voice my concern, but he never responded. In the end, he did this job at an inexpensive cost, but an inexpensive waste is a waste all the same, as I will need to have the job redone the right way now. Did an ok job with patching my ceiling. I had to paint 3 more times over the spackle so the repair wasnt so obvious. I was hoping for better results. He patched my celiling from recessed lighting work as I asked and the paint matched, but needed more smoothing and painting to be less obvious, so I just did it myself to avoid the back and forth with Joe. He didnt do anything wrong, I just was hoping for better cosmetic results. I may need to have my ceiling resurfaced, but it looks much better after I touched up and painted 3 times. As far as him making effort in getting the materials, he did well. I felt he rushed the job, left me with clean-up and cut the closet door uneven. Very unclear communication at times. I was okay with paying more for things if it meant better quality (I.e. having another company cut the hallway closet door instead of him, see pic), just wish he would have told me options. I recommend having ALL of your materials ready to go and establish clear expectations upfront (I'll take responsibility for assuming). He did come back to fix a problem with the bedroom closet. Lots of rework, wrong measurements, and not very friendly. I had to redo a lot of his work. For example, the vertical blinds were too long, and he installed a vent cover that was too large. Measurements were what he gave, and instead of informing me so we could correct it, he decides to install everything. For what's it's worth , Joe took care of the hard part. The small defects he left behind are nothing to make a big fuss about , atleast for me .
