Sometimes you just have to have Handel's. About a week ago, early March, pretty nice night. Warm. Was at Marc's and looked across the street. Yep. Handel's it is then! I got the large shake, wife got a large scoop in a cup. Used to be a splurge. But as high as Dairy Queen has brought their prices up for their powdered milk pseudo dairy-like products, Handel's is a clear winner every time these days! Let's see, let's see... Do I want the high milk fat super premium ice cream that is made on site as needed? Or do I want the stuff made of powdered packaged ingredients? And yes, I am aware that some DQ products come in liquid form in a large plastic sack. Delicious as DQ sounds, and I DO stop in occasionally since it is close to where I live in Lake Milton. When it comes down to just pure Taste and Texture, or TT's as I like to call them, the TT's are my go to choice for delicious dairy treats every time! Stopped on the way back from Chicago to Philadelphia and we all needed an ice cream treat. The line was long when we arrived, but moved fairly quickly. I had perused the menu online and was very sad when the woman in front of me ordered Key Lime Pie only to be told they'd just run out. I had been drooling over this option for 40 miles. Still, I ordered a NY Cheesecake scoop, and figured that would be fine. My friend was also disappointed that they didn't have all the flavors listed on their website. She has some food sensitivities and a lot of their lactose-free options were not in stock. She also substituted. Her son got the vanilla Oreo, which is just what he wanted. The ice cream was very, very good. Staff was friendly and helpful. Prices were super reasonable compared to our fancy ice cream shops in Philly. I got all three cups for a little over $10. But... My NY cheesecake tasted nothing like cheesecake. My friend tried it too and we agreed it was probably cookie dough instead. They were out of two thirds of what we wanted based on the website so we felt a little cheated. I will certainly go back if I'm in the area, but I'll keep this in mind. It's also the original - providing further evidence that the original is usually the best (much like with Back To The Future and, well, me. So won't the real Fox E please stand up?) It's located a little ways East of a major highway, in the NW suburbs of Youngstown. Austintown is the name of the burb, and perfect is the description of the products. I definitely have my favourite, and it's the heavenly "Chocolate Malt W/Caramel" flavour, which can be served as either the best ice cream, or best shake, you may ever have. Certainly the best I've ever had from a chain restaurant, although Cook Out's Fresh Banana shake might protest. You also should try the excellent homemade lemonade in the summer (not available when it's cold), and anything else that takes your fancy (such as me). With its recognizable blue-and-white colours and an enormous number of chain locations now throughout the country, especially in OH and PA, its really cool to visit this, the original location and best, with the wonderful tastes and dreamy creamy products. Youngstown is an often-forgotten part of the world, but it will always be the home to Handel's - the best ice cream and milkshake chain in the country. When I'm famous, I will still get products from here, but I won't come and buy them myself... I'll have my Handel-ers come here and buy them for me. read more

I'm not sure what Handel's can do wrong. Did someone say Pralines Pecan will make you (think about) slappin your mama. Notice I didn't say mine, my mama still puts the fear of God in me and I'm OLD. Handel's ice cream is TO DIE FOR and they have tons of flavors always at the ready. It's rich and made with quality incredients...no ice crystals here folks. This Handel's location is very welcoming, has ample parking available and the workers are very friendly. They allow you to sample the flavors to narrow down your decision. Be prepared though, they give you alot of ice cream and I think their prices are more than fair for the quality and amount of ice cream that you get. One tip, it's honestly better to just order in pints here. You save some money in the long run and (maybe) have some left over for another day. read more

Being originally from New Hampshire for the first 46 years of my life, then living in the Charlotte, North Carolina area for the next 4 years, moving up to Northwest Region of Pennsylvania for my late husband's job and living there for 5 1/2 years, finally we moved to Austintown, Ohio and I have been here just over 10 years now. So with saying that I can say without a doubt - hands down - no questions asked - that Handel's Ice Cream is the BEST Ice Cream I have ever eaten!!!!! Their Butterscotch Ripple is to die for! It is almost impossible to find Butterscotch in any store! If I was able to find it, I'm sure it would not be anywhere near as good as Handel's!!!! This is why Handel's has been around for so long! You can't beat the price and the quality! Everyone there is very pleasant to deal with and I've never had bad customer service! I usually go to the Austintown location but once in a while I will go to the one in Boardman if I am over that way. This is one of the first things I heard about upon first moving to Ohio!
