Her voice had some juice behind it. I have taught customer service skills for many years and I notice these things. "That sounded like you really meant it." "I did mean it - I would not have said it otherwise." Me: "It's hard to do a repetitive job like this and keep your freshness. How do you do it?" Jennifer: "I just like people." Me: " I like you - and you are good at what you're doing. What kind of aspirations do you have for yourself?" J: "I would like to be an assistant manager in this store." Me: "I hope you get that. Too many people in retail get promoted because they are competent in certain ways, but they really don't have people skills. Then they make life miserable for the people who report to them, who may have good people skills." I'm betting that Jennifer would be a good assistant manager. She's smart, solid, hard-working and good with people.

Yikes. I pulled up to a pump to get gas and within a couple of seconds noticed a female employee at…read morethe neighboring pump SMOKING A CIGARETTE! This is extremely dangerous with gas vapors and even though my 4 runner was on empty, I stopped pumping early to leave. The employee was just wiping down the pump with some kind of cleaning spray and had the cigarette hanging out of their mouth with a giant ash at least an inch long hanging there. As I was leaving I pulled up beside her and rolled my window down "smoking at the pumps is extremely dangerous mam" to which she yelled back "I work here! I know what I'm doing!" Clearly. Smoking at the pump is actually illegal. I guess the danger signs on the pumps not to smoke and warning signs that it is in fact illegal do not apply to employees...because their cigarettes are magic. See photo attached and maybe pick somewhere else to pump your gas.

Prices weren't bad, especially when considering the competition. Really good for routine maintenance, inspection, oil changes, etc. I rented trucks on occasion, they were in good condition, and logistics were simple. I never felt like they were ripping me off, or nickle-and-diming me. Allen hardly knew me, but always treated me with respect, as did his staff. For a while I had leaking tires, but was in a hurry for an appointment. I explained my problem, and asked him if I could use his air hose. He loaned me his tire gauge, and said to help myself when I needed to. I bought my own gauge, and did that on a number of occasions, never was confronted by any of the staff. He explained the differences between synthetic oil and regular oil, and why it's important to use the former. He replaced my brakes a year and a half ago, but coming down the mountains, I noticed a grinding sound from the rear left brake. My local mechanic in Spruce Pine examined it, and said the brakes were fine, it was just the indicator. Well the sound got worse, and I did have a two year warranty. I contacted him, drove down to Woodfin, and repaired my brakes on warranty, pointing out there was a loose pin that got jammed, and was providing the sound. He explained that it wasn't dangerous, but it wasn't right. He fixed it rapidly, and sent me on my way, a happy customer.
