You know, it feels a little weird to write a review about a gas station. Yet, I feel compelled to…read morewrite about this one place. I don't live in Asheville, in fact I live very far away. I drive to Asheville a few times a year (anything to avoid flying with those stupid airlines), and since it's fairly close to where I stay, I will go there to gas up. Often when I've gone there, the attendant was outside cleaning the pumps or chatting up people. I don't know, it's just that there were some general good vibes. Is that weird? To me, it is a little bit weird in that almost all gas stations are places that skeeve me out. People watching is often entertaining and horrifying at the same time. Most attendants at these places obviously don't want to be there, and most of the time everything is dirty, even in the new places. So, yeah, it's a bit weird that I'm writing this. But, I wouldn't be writing it if it didn't affect me in someway shape or form. It has. It's not an earth shattering experience for most people, but it something I always notice when I'm there.

By sheer accident of fate, I ended up going to two Hot Spots in as many days. While there are many…read moresurface similarities between this Hot Spot and the Ashland one, there are also glaring differences. Both smell of Pinesol and stale hot dogs. Both have rather primitive gas pumps. This one, however, does not boast an epic twitter feed and a wall-to-wall line of hookers trying to buy 5 hour energy drinks with credit cards. So it's somewhat less interesting than its Ashland cousin. On the other hand, it is selling a full line of Oscar Blues beer, including Old Chub, at 8.69 a six pack. Which is 2 dollars cheaper than anywhere else in town. It also sells non-ethanol gasoline, which is kind of a big deal to me on a philosophical level. If extremely competitive Old Chub and non-ethanol gas are a big deal to you, too, you're going to enjoy this gas station quite a bit. If not, stick to the Eblin--it's way more pleasant.

Prices weren't bad, especially when considering the competition. Really good for routine maintenance, inspection, oil changes, etc. I rented trucks on occasion, they were in good condition, and logistics were simple. I never felt like they were ripping me off, or nickle-and-diming me. Allen hardly knew me, but always treated me with respect, as did his staff. For a while I had leaking tires, but was in a hurry for an appointment. I explained my problem, and asked him if I could use his air hose. He loaned me his tire gauge, and said to help myself when I needed to. I bought my own gauge, and did that on a number of occasions, never was confronted by any of the staff. He explained the differences between synthetic oil and regular oil, and why it's important to use the former. He replaced my brakes a year and a half ago, but coming down the mountains, I noticed a grinding sound from the rear left brake. My local mechanic in Spruce Pine examined it, and said the brakes were fine, it was just the indicator. Well the sound got worse, and I did have a two year warranty. I contacted him, drove down to Woodfin, and repaired my brakes on warranty, pointing out there was a loose pin that got jammed, and was providing the sound. He explained that it wasn't dangerous, but it wasn't right. He fixed it rapidly, and sent me on my way, a happy customer.

Some guy who looked like he'd just gotten out of PRISON opened my hood and said, "You'll need to buy a new COMPRESSOR. He didn't even have me turn the engine and compressor on. I went to another place, they put some Refrigerant in the system, and it lasted until the vehicle laid down and died (about 5 years. . .. ) Red is a THIEF. Stay away from him. He delights in being dishonest. . . .

They also now have TVs, which makes the Penny Mart a nice quiet location to catch a game. They have recently added Foothills Meats, as the other reviewer noted, which really completes the experience for me--people-watching at their streetside bar while enjoying a meaty sandwich is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon.
