He was later than our scheduled times because: 1. His wife had errands to run and he needed to stay with their children. 2. It was hot and he took his kids to the water park. 3. He took his wife to the dentist. He left during the work to: 1. Buff a friend's truck. 2. Fix another customer's plumbing problem. 3. Meet his wife and son who was getting a haircut. Some of the repairs he made were OK, but much of the work was not professional looking. His painting was awful. Paint was dripped on the baseboards, slopped on the trim, and smeared on the floor. I had to repaint the baseboards and trim. The floors were not adequately cleaned. After he left, I spot clean the carpet and redid the hardware and tiled floors. He was not true to his stated prices. He exaggerated the scope and the hours of his work to inflate his bill. Jacob seems sincere and anxious to work, but he is more interested in over charging than providing good service at a fair price. Do not fall victim to this unethical handyman. I never met or spoke with her and to my knowledge, she never came to the home so her accounting of what I said or what was done is not first hand. The work was spread over a week, but none of the days were full days. The water slide work delay mentioned was not on the 4th of July. Her husband took the kids to Carowinds water park that day -- a different outing. His last work day was the 3rd. I never said do the work and I'll pay. There was no final walk through; no expression of satisfaction with the totality of the work. She is repeating her husband's exaggerated work claims. For example, "trenching" was scrapping some mulch from in front of a drainage exit: "screen repair" was replacing one screw that was missing for one of the screens to attach to. And the floor cleaning: I was going to hire Stanley Steamer when Jacob said he had a guy who would do the carpet for $69, claiming that I would get a discounted price due to the volume of work I was having done and the hope of establishing an on-going relationship. Jacob also said that his wife wanted to do the hardwoods and tiled floors at cost for the same reasons. He then claimed that the carpet cleaning guy could do the other floors for less that his wife. On the final invoice, he charged $550 for the floor cleaning. He claimed 5 hours of service. The cleaner was there for 2.

Rather than stating that they're great to work with (which they truly are) let me elaborate on my actual experience. Given I was seeking to remodel an existing porch structure in a pretty significant way, I initially enlisted the services of a structural engineering firm to create drawings for me. Thereafter, I began interviewing prospective contractors to perform the work laid out in the drawings and was quite surprised at the relative indifference and/or opposition shown by several contractors toward the existence of the plans - most claimed there wasn't a need for them or attempted to tell me how engineers just overcomplicate things. Paul, on the other hand, was actually delighted to know that I had these engineering plans in hand and went over them with me at our very first meeting. He was intelligent enough to realize that if he followed the engineering drawings, as laid out; he would have no issues in getting the project through the county code enforcement process which would be a win for both him, as a contractor, and me, as the client. Paul takes a lot of pride in his work and he works hard to please his customers. By nature, I am a very particular individual; and being a Realtor by profession, makes me even more so. Paul took all of my feedback in stride and did everything he could to meet my exacting standards. There were days when I literally hovered over him and his team; more so to learn from them (given my profession) rather than to supervise - but I'm quite sure this couldn't have been a lot of fun for him and the crew. In the few instances where my expectation on certain things happened to exceed the underlying project scope; Paul was very diplomatic in pointing this out to me and we quickly found common ground such that I wasn't compromising his profit margins and was able to fulfill my desires. I also wanted a proper estimate on the front end; as well as, a full paper trail of the project - including change orders - which Paul readily supplied. Paul's pricing was fair and the project was completed within the cost margins of error and project timeline I had planned for. I had a vision for what the porch would look like when completed and Paul provided a lot of good feedback in making my vision a reality. We talked through a lot of different things like material choices, design, electrical outlet locations etc. I'll conclude by saying Paul is just a genuinely good person....period; and anyone who opts to work with him is in good hands.
