When he came over for a consultation, he took copious documentation on what we wanted, including photos, measurements, notes on our discussion, etc. 2. His wife followed up with us via email on the quotes and contract. 3. Pricing is not too bad, not the cheapest we came across, but definitely not the most expensive. 4. He brought 1 worker with him, and came on time and on the right day as agreed, with all of the materials prepped in advance. 5. They finished up the 3 rooms in 1 day. 6. They brought and wore their own disposable booties to keep our floors clean. 7. They cleaned all of the mess before they left. 8. I was sent an email copy of the receipt following the engagement. All in all, a no hassle deal. Some of the things that could have been better: 1. The worker Gary brought with him left dirt stains on the newly painted wall which we had to clean. I'm sure if I mentioned it he would have made sure it was cleaned up, but I didn't notice until they were already gone for the day. 2. The finishing work (i.e. nail hole patching, caulking, painting) wasn't as clean as we would have liked, but I guess that's what happens in a one day job. That was passable. I've experienced pretty much all of the scenarios we hear in the all-too-common scare stories: contractors who disappeared in the middle of a job, never to be heard from again. Guys who muck it up or failed to follow specification(s). Guys who underbid & then ask for more money before completion. Guys who flat-out never show up, then call the following week to see if I still want the work done... I could go on, but, you get the idea. This is why I'm still pinching myself for having found a unicorn in the handyman world. Helpful Home Maintenance (HHM) meets or exceeds all the benchmarks of what one wants in a good handyman: - Responds quickly to inquiries (phone call, email, text). - Shows up at the agreed-upon time. - Bids the project accurately & quickly. - (Very) reasonably priced. - Quality work. - Attention to detail. - Does what they say they're going to do. - The guy that starts the job is the one who finishes it. I've employed HHM twice now, & have been delighted by the work they've done. In both instances, the results of the work have turned out even better than what I'd imagined. I don't know what to make of it. The above-mentioned benchmarks seem reasonable (they're the minimum expectation in every other trade), and yet, I've found only one company that hits the bullseye. Kephart Handyman is actually two brothers, Barry & Bill Kephart, and they just finished up a job for me. I had a list of the usual handyman-type tasks that needed to be done - replacing an electrical outlet, replacing the puck lights above my kitchen sink, replacing the weatherstripping around a door and painting a room, plus one bigger job - replacing an exterior French door. They did all of that for a reasonable price and they did a very good job, too! All through the process, they communicated with me regularly. They showed up when they said they would and they cleaned up after themselves, too!
