Someone knowledgeable is always there. It's a small walkable footprint unlike the big box stores where most of your shopping time is spent walking around. A very large space with an ample parking lot. They are so customer friendly that they sell the best bottled soda and fresh popcorn, as well as a few other snacks! I drive far to get there because I call in advance to see if they can help me and always find what I need.

The location was open until 6pm, the store was organized and fully stocked. I was able to grab what I needed and head home to begin my projects with ease. I went in trying to find CO2 cartilages for a plunger that my house had in the closet. While workers found my picture interesting... they didn't have any. I continued and ended up grabbing free seasoning, seeds and a free tote bag. Lunch and to some freebies made the visit worthwhile. The staff answered my questions, yet did not pressure me. Ego ? and yeti was on sale, but to expensive for me. The store looked clean and nice for the grand opening.

I love this place so much…read more I lived in Old North for five years, and was a frequent visitor to Marx during that time. I still stop by when I go back to visit St. Louis. There is no place like it. They still heat the place exclusively with the potbelly stove. They have hunting trophies and a roll-top desk. They still sell window glaze by the pound. Marx has been open since 1875, and has been in the same family most of that time. While their inventory may appear slightly underwhelming on the surface, ask them if you don't see what you need right away. They may have it in the back, or may have an alternate idea. If they don't have something, Steve can tell you another place on the Near North Side to get it. Several times during the renovation of my old house, I'd try going to Home Depot for something and discover that they do not sell things appropriate to an old house. So I'd go back to Marx and of course they knew where I could get an 36" chimney cap for an 1890s chimney, or where I could get push mower blades sharpened, or... really, you name it, and he always knew. Another experience I had with Marx while renovating my old house: Several times I would have a last-minute emergency, moments before Marx was set to close for the day, and I'd call over there and ask, "Hey, it's Claire on Sullivan Street. I just had a plumbing blowout. Can you please stay open for 10 more minutes so I can get the parts I need to have running water tonight?" and they would stay open for me. I don't know that they'd do that for casual customers they didn't know, but the fact that they do it at all says a lot. You can't build that kind of relationship or get that kind of service from Home Depot or Lowes. Steve even let me use the shop to film a scene of a short movie. Again, not a thing they'd necessarily do for any random person who walked in the door, but the fact that he did that says something about his generosity. Not only did he let our whole slew of actors-not-going-to-buy-anything traipse all over the store and change costumes, but he even volunteered to play the shopkeeper in our little movie. So, so nice. Worth noting briefly: Marx carries a handful of household goods. Detergent, toilet paper, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, stuff like that. When I lived on the Near North Side without a car, I was mighty grateful to be able to get these things a couple of blocks from my house. They might be cheaper elsewhere, but not having to cross town and keeping the money in my community, are worth it. Obviously this is not an impartial review, but this place has gone above and beyond for me many times. Detroit (my new home) has many great hardware stores in its neighborhoods, but Marx is still my all-time favorite.

There were plenty of shovels in stock, but i couldn't find the salt. I asked a gentleman stocking the shelves of there was any salt. He never turned around to acknowledge me, he simply continued stocking the shelves and said they were completely out of salt, but an emergency shipment should be coming in but he didn't know when. I paid for my shovel and left. Decently priced shovel and it got the job done removing the snow.

The customer service area for returns, questions, etc... the older & more experienced workers are top-notch, professional & have empathy to resolve customer's issues. The younger workers in customer service need additional training & experience in Home Depot & product manufacturers policies & procedures. The variety of selections of products is different based on the disposable income of the surrounding area codes. We bought a Rheam 75 gal hot water heater that we had to return based on the product's specs, lack of quality & numerous issues that we only found out via 'Reddit'. I would recommend buying any expensive products only after researching via Reddit. Home Depot has 'B' - not quality or the best products. We had a 3 month trial/error based on Rheam's warranty, faulty products/parts & spent/wasted money because Home Depot is not responsible & the manufacturer is never going to admit their recalls, returns & subpar products in the retail stores. You need to consult a licensed & reliable trades person,- research Reddit and find a valued 'affordable' trades person. We ended up going with our plumber to Ferguson Plumbing for an 'A' quality product which worked 100% and resolved all problems on the 1st try! Home Depot products are inferior, manufacturer's warranties are a joke = delays, faulty parts & you still have to go back to Home Depot to get a refund, gift card, etc...

I hit all the big box stores and even checked the web and could not find one I liked at a price I wanted to pay. I was at a point, where I was giving up and deciding not to have a Christmas tree. To my surprise, I found the perfect tree at a mom and pop hardware store. I came to St Peters, to pick-up some lawn bags and left with lawn bags and a new Christmas tree at a sale price that was cheaper then any of the other places I shopped. Lesson learned, shop local for the best service and value.
