PLEASE BEWARE I have filed my federal and State income taxes with Hanks Tax Services since 2020 with the exception of 2023. I went in today to have my 2024 taxes prepared by Sam. While Sam was entering/preparing my 2024 taxes he discovered a HUGE mistake on my 2022 taxes which were prepared by the Owner Hank himself! I submitted my rental income to Hank at the time of my tax preparation in 2023. Hank did not enter the amount I submitted for rental income. The amount was clearly on the worksheet he provided me at the time of service. This omission by Hank caused me to get a refund that was overpaid so now I OWE the IRS over $2400 with penalty. When this was brought to Hanks attention today June 18, 2025 at or around 11:30am he became defensive and did not offer an explanation for the error and omission but proceeded along with Sam to tell me that Sam corrected the error and will NOT CHARGE ME for the correction as is customary. I stated why would you charge me for an error Hank caused? Hank was with a customer so He stated we will have to wait until Hank was finished before we could discuss further. Sam then offered to reduced my $360 charge for 2024 taxes which he had already completed to $300. I stated I should not have to pay for 2024 taxes given I paid over $300 for 2022 taxes that were incorrectly filed by Hank and will cost me over $2400 due to his error. He asked Hank if he could file for free and he stated NO make an appointment with her to come back and discuss this personally with me. Why couldn't he ask me to wait until he was finish with his customer then speak with me. Why ask me to make an appointment and come back? This is SERIOUS! I OWE over $2400 to the IRS due to Hank and Hanks Tax services Negligence. read more

Taxes like any government entity is rather complex. So why I ever thought in 2018 that I could file my own taxes remains a mystery. However, I did and subsequently created an error that I could not resolve on my own. Lucky for me a fellow teacher referred me to Hank's Tax Service and that is when I first met Sam Erwin. Naturally, for the last 7 years I have filed my taxes with the very knowledgeable and competent, Sam Erwin. Not only have I benefited from Sam's abilities in the tax world, but so have some families that I was in contact with through my job as a teacher. A major problem was the IRS indicating that there was potential misuse of the flier's social security number and they now required an ID PIN. The initial tax preparer that these families went to just made matters more complicated versus actually resolving the issue. Subsequently, I introduced the families to Sam Erwin and their situation was resolved. Listening to Sam explain the complicated world of taxes is like listening to a college professor. I really should have written this review years ago. The only benefit of the delay is that I accumulated additional evidence of Sam Erwin's abilities as a tax preparer. In all fairness, I am at a loss for words with this rating. In fact, I don't even know how to truly rate it for the most recent experience we have had and please take a moment to read and decide for yourself how you feel about the services I've experienced. Bittersweet, in my honest opinion... During tax season, we go out to Hank's Tax Service located in Kapolei to meet with a specific tax preparer, since we moved to Hawaii, we have always gone to Hank's Tax Service. Only one time that our tax preparer was overbooked and we could not meet with her, instead we met with someone else and a year later, our tax preparer found discrepancies and had to amend our taxes. She has given us many of the tax breaks we were entitled to as a military family that we just never really knew about (mind you I have been with my active duty military husband for 8 years now) I didn't know I was able to claim my husband's home of record as his spouse. I didn't know I didn't have to pay Hawaii state taxes, I didn't know that changing my home of record with my federal job will not impact my COLA, I didn't know a lot about taxes and that's why I don't do my own taxes. My husband and I pay good money and we learn a lot from tax preparer. Fast forward to today... Last January we filed our taxes early because my husband was deploying. Our taxes included our solar system install. As early as we met with our tax preparer in the year, it was already busy. She does service the majority of Hank's customers and the majority prefer to see her and only her. She is amazing at at her preparing taxes and she is passionate about it. February came and we had been the lucky ones to be selected for a state tax audit. Because my husband was deploying we rushed to get a Power of Attorney done for our tax person to get involved with the state. Several weeks later I received a collection notice and let her know, we had been told not to worry and it will be taken care of. I continued to receive state letter in the mail about having to pay some couple grand...I was confused because we were owed money for the solar system install. I spoke to our tax person and was told the same thing over again throughout months through the year. We have all our paperwork, not to worry, you don't owe anything and it will be taken care of even after expressing how crucially serious mine and my husband's job will react to any debts especially ones owing on taxes. Security clearances can be revoked and it is NOT A JOKE!! That worried me the whole time of receiving threats of wage garnishment for non-payment. I have reached out to the state myself and due to covid I got the runaround of trying to reach anyone who can help. At this point we are angry that we feel lead to believe everything will in fact be taken care of and we were so wrong. Finally I gave in to what my husband has been suggesting for the last month and that was to get Hank involved. The whole time I figured we went through Hank's Tax Service, trusted he was already involved after being told by our tax person that he would be. It is now December 30th and have been calling the different locations for all Hank's Tax Service and finally found Hank at the Waiakamilo location. He did ask why we didn't contact him and why it ended up this far deep into impacting our jobs and I told him that we didn't know we had to contact him directly because we have been told everything will be taken care of and thought that he had all those answers already. He stressed to me that it's the end of the year and if we are owed any tax credits we need to go in as soon as possible or it may be lost. So my boss gave me the rest of the day off to get this resolved, I get home to pick up hubby and all the needed documents and head back downtown. Perfect timing as Hank was just finishing up with a client. We explain all that we been through all year and to our surprise he knew nothing about it. We were now angry with ourselves for trusting the tax preparer was getting everything taken care of since February, took Hank only 3 hours to find more errors on our filed 2019 taxes. They were, however, understandable mistakes that was easily overlooked due to a flaw in the tax program they use. Numbers were placed in wrong fields also. Hank corrected everything and double checked all documents for accuracy and even called the state on our behalf to be sure it wasn't too late for us to receive any refunds owed to us and amended 2019 taxes to make right what was wrong. Hank was patient with us and we appreciated the time and attention afforded to us to resolve the stress we had been experiencing all year. With that said I give Hank 5 stars for putting out the fire in 3 hours what we have been trying to put out all year. Bittersweet 2 stars overall for the emotional rollercoaster and how our jobs were impacted. read more

Hank is amazing!! We came to him because we needed to have our tax forms corrected. Being in the military it was my first time filing with both of us having income. Hank is very informative and knowledgeable and has been doing taxes for many years. I would definitely recommend him to those who don't want to deal with the hassle and frustration that I experienced as when I sent in the appropriate paperwork required to the State of Hawaii they claimed it was incorrect even after I followed all the directions. they also have a office in Kapolei, I used autum for two years until I got a letter from the IRS telling me my taxes has not been filed for two years, I paid autum over $800 to do my taxes when I got the letter I contacted autum and she just kept lying with more lies and more lies. I went to the office on waikamilo and hank tried to cover her lies but finally admitted the taxes was not filed , he finally filed them but tried to charge me again. I really thought autum was a nice honest lady but let me tell you she is a pathological liar and cost me thousands of dollars in late tax payment fees . read more

Very friendly and fast service, but not a very good product. I have done my taxes on my own for over twenty years, but had an issue this year because I had worked a second job. I was hoping visiting a tax "professional" would have helped to reduce my liability. The opposite occurred as my tax liability didn't change and I had to pay for the service. Lesson learned. If you can do you own taxes on Turbo Tax/HR Block online software, just do it. Save yourself the money. read more

RED FLAG, RED FLAG DANGER Went down about a couple of weeks ago to see if Hanks Tax Service could do my taxes, wife taxes, and son. The lady that was standing by the front was nice, kind, and helpful. I asked if they could do my son's taxes with in mind that my son wanted to know if he could deduct some expenses for taxes. She asked what kind of work and pay. I also told her that he got money from school in a form of stipend. She didn't know what was stipend and just for coincidence Hank was in the area so she asked Hank what that was. Hank explained to her it was income shown as a W-2. A small red flag came to mind. Hank explained to bring in all the W-2s and his Hank Tax Service will take a look at it. Again he said bring in the W-2 and his Hank Tax Service will take a look at it. Now 4-3-2023 brought in all the information to the Hanks Tax Service. Again met a nice, kind, and helpful lady at the front (different from the original). She was about to get me started on the process of doing my taxes when another gentleman came and looked at what the questionnaire they provided earlier and seen that the total income was not filled. He asked to filled it out and I asked him which W-2s or which other form I should get the income information from. The gentlemen with shorts (another small red flag for a business) said Hanks Tax Service Does Not Know which forms or which W-2s income should be used. BIG BIG RED FLAG. So asked him again just incase I didn't make my self clear. He said W-2s are not the only place income are shown so I asked him like where for my situation he did said he didn't know. BIG BIG RED FLAG. If the person thats doing your taxes does not know where to look for income or ask the right questions or at least add W-2s DO NOT HAVE THEM DO YOUR TAXES. Again Hank himself said to me earlier to bring in the W-2s and any other form and Hanks Tax Services was going to take a look at it. The gentleman in shorts said Hanks Tax Services does not do that. RED FLAG RED FLAG DANGER . I decided right then that I was not going to do my taxes at Hanks Tax Services. Just remember everyone you are the one paying. Do not shop here. I had Hanks do my 2012 and 2013 taxes last year. All was well until I went back to Hanks Tax today to have them do my 2014 taxes. The Hanks tax preparer this year tells me the Hanks tax preparer last year did my taxes wrong, for both years! The crazy thing is Hank himself oversaw the preparer last year. I've lived in Hawaii for over 8 years and I manage to find Hank's Tax Service. Looking for a business that will treat you like family and will get your refund, Hank's tax service is the way to go. Dealing with other tax preparations, leave me with uncertainty and holes in my pockets because the "mainland" companies over price their rates. I been going to Hank's with his previous companies and I know that their staff is very knowledgeable compared to inexperience tax preparers.
