Especially when you haven't ridden a bike since you were a kid and you are currently a chubby American tourist. I wisely rented a bike from that strange bikingbox place that has absolutely no signage. It's a convenience store right on the same road as the Menen Gate and my favorite store in all of Belgium: Shop & Go! This yummy food cost only about 10 Euros. And it was delicious! The friendly lady who took my order recommended that I get the fries with mayo, because 'when in Rome...' I was pretty grossed-out by the mayo-dipped fries, but the fries alone were amazing. They were light and golden-crispy. Perfect! My burger had a bunch of toppings like cheese and bacon and such. I have never had a tastier burger. And the beer! I was so tired from biking, I went for the huge size. Thank goodness it was just a short walk back to my B&B. Great meal, great trip! I loved Ieper so much! I would go back in a hearbeat!

A friterie (Fr), frituuror (Nl), or frying place that serves ice cream. So if it's fried, this place has it. The beignets are to die for. Oh my. Great outer texture. Soft interior with the right amount of powdered sugar on top. Forget about the ones in New Orleans. You have to come here. The waffles? Oh so delightful. Crispy on the outside and delicate fluff on the inside. Even better than the ones in the Grand Place in Brussels. Although my family likes another place for ice cream better, this is my favorite in Koksijde. The right amount of cream and well flavored with more bits inside. So it's not a dining locale. Don't come here because you think you'll get fine food. It's fried, Belgian style. Maybe a quick bite at lunch. But for gouter or after dinner tasting, it's worth the trip.

This time however I found myself right next to a Quick, the Belgian McDonalds. All I wanted was a couple burgers and a couple coffees. This took about 15 minutes though! The place wasn't crowded. I got waited on 3 minutes after I walked into the place. The young lady was nice, took my order, smiled and brought me the coffees immediately. It was the burgers that took forever. I don't know if the kitchen staff/burger maker was on a smoke break but it took forever to get two burgers! Actually by the time they came the coffee was quasi-warm. I guess I shouldn't complain; customer service is not something that is important in Belgium. I just wish they would change the name to something that didn't make you think you'd be served and fed Quick-ly.
