I started years ago with Hanscom with a HELOC which I used to manage fluctuations in business merchandise inventory. I could get a better rate that way compared to a commercial loan. Later when interest rates started rising, I converted what I owed to a conventional 15 yr fixed rate home mortgage. There are a lot of hoops to jump through that are silly. For example, they forced me open a checking account that I didn't want or need as a condition of doing the loan. So for about 10 yrs now I've had a checking account with a balance of $1 the entire time, not a single transaction in 10 yrs, and they keep sending new debit cards which I immediately shred when they arrive. Likewise they required me to also open a savings account with a $25 min balance that I didn't want or need, so I've had an inactive savings account just sitting there with the $25 min balance. I wanted to set the loan payment up on autopay from an external bank account, and the first several years they didn't offer the functionality for that - they said if I wanted to do autopay, payment would have to come from the my Hanscom checking or savings account (which I never wanted). I refused to be strong armed by Hanscom into switching to their checking & savings accounts. In fairness, after several yrs, they did eventually change to allow me to set up autopay from an account at an external account. Now I keep getting unsolicited and unwanted USPS mail from Hanscom wanting me to sign up for some type of insurance they are offering. It comes in an envelope stating "we must hear from you within 14 days" to make it seem like it's an urgent banking issue to get you to open their junk mail. There is no "14 day deadline" because I've been getting the same junk mail stating that deadline for months. There is no option to opt out of their junk mail. How many trees do they need to kill and landfills do they need to fill up before they realize that if I haven't responded to the first 20 letters, I'm not likely to respond to future unwanted upsell attempts? All they done is drive me away from ever doing any new business of any kind with them in the future. read more

To whom it may concern: Phone call to HFCU RE: HFCU -Ms Prajida Bhattarai HFCU Phone Customer Service Representative Bank phone call Date 7/13/2023 (aprox mid day) I had some rather difficult tax and investment questions with respect to my husband's HFCU- IRA account. His account has a couple of CDs coming to maturity. Ms Bhattarai answered all my questions. She was so professional. Her answers to my questions were clear and consise . Then , I needed to have her speak to my husband regarding the most current interest rates to consider for a roll-over. After she politely identified herself to him, she listed for him the current Ira-cd interest rate information. Then she explained to us the HFCU procedures to follow in the event he reaches his RMD date. She mentioned that the Bank had current procedures regarding IRA accounts and the he would most probably would receive notice as the RMD date appoached. She gave us the current procedures the HFCU uses when calculating , handling, conferring and notifying him when the RMD may be be required to be paid out. The service itself isn't a problem, the problem arises whenever I have to call in to correct an issue. This is because whenever I call the number they provide I have to wait on the phone for a minimum of 1 hour. If you have a busy schedule or an active life then this isn't the place you should turn to for loans or banking of any type. read more

I Just bought my motorcycle and Hanscom funded my loan. Its only been a month into the loan and I hate their service. They conned me into opening a checking account by specifically guaranteeing that doing that will lower my APR and after I did open then backed out saying that you opened the account through a dealer and its motorcycle loan. She was so rude that she took 30 min to tell me this and then she started pushing that she have to go and she can transfer me to a call center which can read me the scripts handed out to them. Transferring of money from external account to saving/checking is so much pain in the ass. Its 2015 and their service is still in 1970's where you have to mail every request since online requests are seemingly forbidden. The only good part is they offered lowest APR among banks I talked to. But they are worst to deal with. Till date(almost 2 months into loan), I still haven't received the welcome package to set up online account. I had to call in myself to see when is my amount due and how can I set up payment and then they told me to write a letter to request my account number which they then sent in mail in 10 days through which I was able to set up online access. This bank needs to update their process to today's process and they need to honor their commitments and promises instead of ditching. I would not suggest anyone to deal with them unless they live right across the street from them. read more

Hanscom Fed. Credit Union is amazing (loc. 495 Summer St Boston) ! What is more amazing is the personalized service you get when you become a member. I have been with Hanscom for 4 years now; when I walk in each of the personal bankers, knows my name. Wired transfers, disputes anything that has ever come up they have resolved with great speed and efficiency. I also fully appreciate their industry knowledge, which helps make decisions easier. Every time I go in I am reminded of how special they make me feel not only as a customer but as a person. Chieko, Patti(branch mgr.) , Eric, Joanne...thank you for being so amazing-- you make banking a different experience. For years everyone and their brother has been telling me how great Hanscom is. But I have finally decided I have to part with them. The basic reason is that their security is too much. I know weird reason right? Every time I want to log on I have to get a "security" code. Even if I just did it five seconds ago. No chance at all that I can see this account on "mint bills" because you have to put in the security code (would argue this makes things less secure since you can't check your account frequently). Finally I spent about 1/2 a day trying to figure out how to transfer a small amount of money to another bank. (should have just done a check). Then I get a call from fraud review. I said, why did you think this was fraud? They said they always do that the first time. I said why did you not message me from my online bill pay, the guy is like we prefer to call. But that makes no sense because the online bill pay would have confirmed it was me. The call could have been ANYONE with access to my e-mail. Wayyyy too much hassle. I have tried for Mortgages and been spoken to very rudely. I don't think their rates are even competitive and there isn't much that I get from them. I am keeping the account because it is one of the only ones that doesn't charge you for not maintaining a high balance and it is convenient. But I won't have a ton of money in there. My banker is a delight and I got some great advice once when I used their financial manager but ... not what I am looking for. read more

Applied for a HELOC at Hanscom Federal Credit Union. They first didn't understand my deed so I had to hold their hand and call all of the land records depts in my area so they can explain to the loan officer how deeds are done in the digital age in NY. This took about a week. I thought, good, should be smooth from now. Now came the appraisal. Coincidentally, I just had an appraisal done 1 month ago, A FULL APPRAISAL - not the drive-by one they do, by Wells Fargo for a refinancing I was doing of my main mortgage. Since I am in NY, HFCU low-balled my appraisal by 100K from the Wells Fargo appraisal. The reason for the low-ball was "HFCU is more conservative than Wells Fargo". I tried to dispute but they said that there were foreclosures in my area. I asked for proof - they couldn't find ANY EXAMPLE. They said the appraiser wrote on the report that the area has decreasing foreclosures so IT MUST BE TRUE. No proof from the appraiser either and no comment why they wrote that. Alright, I saw I was going nowhere. So after the appraisal fiasco couldn't be resolved Hanscom Federal Credit Union said I can pay $500 for my own appraisal and they would consider it. Keyword: "CONSIDER IT", not accept it. You learn to read between the lines really well when dealing with this place. So I decided - hell no! The kicker was -- I now get an e-mail from my loan officer saying that given my original Wells Fargo appraisal (the one that gave a fair appraised value and one I told them when I originally applied for the loan) I never qualified for the HELOC rate I was applying for because the LTV wasn't what they wanted! Really, after 3 weeks of processing my application and them looking at appraisals from Wells Fargo we find out now that I never qualified for the HELOC I was applying??? Just speechless! read more

When my car crapped out on me, I needed an auto loan for a "new" used car ASAP, and Hanscom saved the day. I called on a Friday and spoke with Patty, who pulled up my credit report and within 3 minutes had pre-approved me for the loan amount I needed. I found a car the next day, called Patty first thing on Monday, sent her the appropriate documents, and she had the loan ready for me by Tuesday. One of the good things about this location is that it opens at 7:30 am, so I was able to grab the loan check before work. The downside is that they are only open until 3:30 pm, so after-work visits are not an option. Anyway, Patty made the loan process VERY easy and painless, especially considering that I didn't really know what I was doing because I'm a first-time auto loan taker-outer. Hanscom also offers great interest rates, better than any bank that I researched. If you live in Boston and need an auto loan, GO TO HANSCOM. And ask for Patty. read more

I've been a member of Hanscom Federal Credit Union for over 5 years (Virginia) and I absolutely love this credit union. I actually closed all of my other accounts. I got a zero interest loan through mass save for my furnace and this bank has been nothing but trouble. Absolutely terrible experience with this place, I would consider this place a borderline scam and would not recommend using this place in a thousand years.Their technology and website make it really difficult to make automatic payments to said loan, unless you deposit money in one of their accounts using physical check scans, which can take multiple days to go through. I think they have a service to transfer payments from an external account but you need to pay additional fees, which completely defeats the purpose of the zero interest loan. I was late on a payment even though I had front loaded it months earlier and they sent me a late notice (fine), but then immediately their customer representative reported me to the credit bureau without notifying me. At the same day he transferred money from the saving account to loan to make payment. read more
