But it looks clean so you can overlook the lack of character. Like most pubs in England you order at the bar and then take your drinks back to your seat. I noticed a lot of folks just drinking and given we're prone to early dinners we ordered right off the bat. The servers are ok for me, though they don't seem to do a really expedient job of cleaning off tables as my food had someone's pea left behind. (It was a nice looking pea so it gave me hope the food was fresh.) We both ordered the trio of meats which consisted of bacon, chicken and lamb - think. I thought it was good until we got to the chicken. The chicken was cooked to death. Now, who hasn't had their share of overcooked chicken- its so easy to do, right? Well... I've never had one that was cooked almost to the consistency of being chicken jerky it was that dry. I liked the yorkshire pudding but I'm one of those that can eat almost any kind of yorkshire pudding. And I liked the vegetables that it came with as well as the lovely gravy. It was a disappointment - the chicken- but outside of that it was pretty decent. We'd go again only because its a stones throw from our house and we can walk there and back in minutes. Not convenient for many but its got a car park so thats a plus.

Lots of places do that dish as a whole round brie, coated heavily in breadcrumbs - not the Town House; theirs was four decent sized cube pieces, in a light crumb/batter coating, fried until the cheese had melted, and served on cranberry sauce with a side of rocket. Really, really nice. A nice varied menu too, ranging from the aforementioned brie through fish and chips, and out into creme brulee. I'm not a drinker, but the prices seem to be in line with other pubs in the area, most drinks being in the £3 - £4 range. Tea/coffee in the ~ £1.50 area. Decent seating arrangements (that seem to change every week), and a wonderful open fire in winter.

The pub had been recommended to us by a friend so despite the 1 hour time limit we had we headed off to the quaint old building. It started well with the drinks arriving quickly and we ordered some basic lunch food, a ciabatta, pannini and some chips. Sitting down we were expecting a 15 minute wait maximum as the place wasn't busy and we hadn't been told otherwise but 35 minutes later we were still sitting there, drinks long finished with no food in sight. The bar staff stood laughing and joking whilst we sat there so in the end I had to go and ask where our food had gone to. We received a curt reply that they had served a party next door first as their order was larger and they wanted their food quickly. We were told another 5 minutes and our food would arrive. 10 minutes later, still smarting from being told our food was less important because we hadn't ordered much, and our food still had not arrived. I went up to ask for a second time explaining we were on a tight time limit. Again met with a less than pleasant reply we were told to wait a while longer. They finally brought the food out and our waitress, rather than apologising for the delay, barked out the food and slammed the plates down. We weren't offered sauces, condiments. Nothing. The only thing that redeems this place is the food. My chips were lovely and fresh, the ciabatta pizza was juicy with plenty of cheese and the tuna pannini had the right mix of Mayo and fish but unfortunately the whole experience was totally spoilt by the long wait, lack of courtesy and the food had to then be wolfed down, leaving half untouched and not even an apology offered. I wouldn't go back here, especially not at lunch time which is a shame because it would be nice to have a locally owned independent pub beating the big chains.

Lots of sci fi and trekkie items around the place. Well it has returned to its old name of The Plough now and has returned from its sci fi adventures unscathed. This has two bars, one of which I have only been in when there is a band on so not sure what it normally looks like. When bands are playing there is no sitting room at all, in fact think sardines! They also normally have a fireworks do which is well attended and good fun. Pretty much all of their events are free to attend which is always a bonus. The other bar is usual dark wood tables and chairs. The bar staff are friendly and the whole pub has a friendly feel about it. Not sure what range of beers they do as I am a juice drinker (always designated driver). There is a small car park at the rear which gets rather packed when an event is on.

My husband and I came here for dinner a few weeks ago after much anticipation. Let me just preface this with the fact that 185 Watling is probably the nicest restaurant in terms of aesthetics in Towcester. The decor is really fabulous and the energy in the restaurant is certainly bustling. There really is no competition for them, so now I understand why we had to take a 9pm reservation (we didn't book far in advance). Overall, service was great and attentive. We really enjoyed our time here but the food was just hit or miss. For a starter we decided to share the charcuterie board and to be honest, it was basically just like eating some ham slices from Tesco and some other meats. Overall it was a weak dish and typically meat dishes are enough to share - my husband and I were battling each other for the meat (literally two pieces of ham and two pieces of chorizo and then a chunk of foie gras). For the mains, they knocked it out of the park (excuse the expression, it's American for REALLY F'ING GOOD). My husband had the porterhouse steak and I had the fish special. We both were really happy with our meals and were basically licking the plate at the end. The dessert (which I can't remember if it was a special or if it has just been removed from the menu) was some weird merengue with rhubarb and it was just disappointing. It was our anniversary so they gave us a complimentary glass of Prosecco (which was very kind of them) and we were able to sit at our table and polish off a second bottle of wine without feeling rushed. I feel really bad giving them three stars and hope that next time we visit that the food has improved, because the service and the ambieance was really fantastic.
