This country pub is a slice of heaven…read more Hook Norton has a very good brewery, and there are several pubs nearby that carry its ales. The Pear Tree is the closest, and it's good enough that we've driven out to it from London several times. It's tucked in the middle of the village of Hook Norton, a very pleasant building. It's not overly large inside, just cozy, and made of the same raw materials that most un-renovated country pubs are. The area is great for rambling. We've done a couple of walks here on arriving, returning to the pub for our post-exertion refreshments. They carry several rotating Hook Norton ales, of course, all of which I find are worth a sample. The menu is broad and always tasty, and popular enough that they often sell out, so go fro lunch early. Illustrative story: The last time at the Pear Tree, we saw Hooky Pie on the menu. We asked what that was, and learned that it's locally-made beef and ale pie. It was, according to the woman behind the bar, very popular, and they usually sell out of it quite quickly. It certainly sounded like an appropriately hearty meal for a December day by an open fire. Then the couple at the table next to us each received that very dish, and the deal was sealed: it was huge, meaty, and tasty-looking. Three of our group of four ordered the Hooky Pie. A few minutes later the bartender came back with bad news: only two portions of pie left. One of the girls took one for the team and ordered fish pie instead. When our food finally arrived, it was as tasty as promised. Delicious. Thick. Oozing gravy. Huge chunks of beef, too, not a ground-up mush. Luckily, the fish pie was just as delicious an alternative for those that took it. A family with three kids came in just as we were finishing and tried to order the Hooky Pie. Sorry, the bartender said, we're all out. Without a pause, she pointed at our table and said, They took the last pies. Five pairs of hungry eyes glared at us from across the pub. We cast our eyes downwards and finished our pints.

This country pub is the best. The owners are lovely people. Nothing is too much trouble…read more The food is spot on. The accommodation rooms are perfect. They have thought of everything. Will definitely come here again when next in the UK.

Driving past the pub looked quaint and old, we were expecting a typical countryside small village boozer. Quite surprised then to find that it's actually been taken over and largely converted into a Greek restaurant, but still keeping enough of the English country pub features that you could stop by for a few beers and some crisps. It's also got a couple of benches out the front which catch the sun and it looks like they're putting together some more in the garden out back. The pub is divided into two rooms, with the larger being dedicated to food and the other being a bar area where you can happily drink or dine as you choose. The food was a bit mixed - all the Greek food was delicious but the English menu items we tried were fairly average though not bad. They had a couple of ales on and the one I tried was well kept and extremely tasty, a local amber ale. If you like Greek food and traditional pubs this is definitely would stopping into, and even if you're just looking for a country pub to enjoy some beer in it still does that very well too.

I had to laugh when I read the first review for the Peacock Inn!! We have had a couple of meals…read morethere and I have to say, the food is delicious and very nicely presented. The pub itself is in the lovely, out-of-the-way village of Oxhill and is a delightfully typical old-English place that has been nicely fitted out. The second time we went, we were squeezed onto a tiny little table for two but we didn't mind since the food had been so great. Now back to why I laughed at the earlier review We too were greeted by the other lady who must spend her entire life being grumpy! She was so quintessentially miserable when she greeted us that neither of us could resist a snigger as we turned away from her! She must take lessons in being fed up and she gets an A Star from me for her performance! That being said, the remainder of the staff were charming and very attentive which covered for her abruptness. Some might not be so amused though and I would just warn you not to feel too cosy as you arrive, especially if you haven't booked or you are in any way near to the time that they stop serving. All in all, worth a visit if you are in the area but watch out for the wasp-chewer!! I was tempted to give the place a 3 Star because of her but the food was too good for that it had to be a 4. It would have been a 5
