Unfortunately, we didn't have a cooler in our trunk to keep any frozen goods cold, so we had to forgo buying Marianne's. The market is bright, clean, and full of beautiful produce and other staples. It had amazing produce vendors with beautiful fresh spreads, including the best plums I've ever had! The ambiance was lovely with the backdrop of the mountains and a band playing Irish music (I think they were called Mountain Lark). There were food vendors, including pastries, pizza, and salami. It was a wonderful way to spend a morning and we will be back. Bonus, if you have kids, there is an area for them to run around and play and plenty of seating.

I love the yummy bites I can get there from local places, like Melrose Cafe, and appreciate that this market has Market Match for those who use EBT. There are also some tables and chairs scattered in the center of this square-shaped market, which gives Live Oak FM a more community vibe than some of the larger, more spread out farmer's markets I've been to. There is some parking right there, but not many. You'd most likely have to find street parking. That's the only downside. Another positive is this FM is right next to a little shopping strip. There are shops like a dollar store, a little tamale shop, and an antique shop. And the beach is only a few blocks away too! Bonus! **They are open on Sundays only**

The downtown market, while a long drive from us in Bonny Doon, is our favorite, by far. My primary objective at farmers' markets is the produce; vendors of meat and fish are convenience, and there are good ones both in Felton and Downtown. I rarely buy prepared food at markets. The downtown market is our favorite for the quality and greater variety of the produce. Parking can be a PITA, but I can usually find a spot within two blocks, often closer. I don't patronize markets for "the scene," or because it's cute, only for stuff to cook -- produce and raw meat and fish. All those folks wandering around, not watching where they're going, getting in the way when I'm dragging 20 lb of food around are a nuisance! :)

Yes, they have gas and a car wash, but that is just the beginning. Inside, there is a gourmet kitchen serving up locally harvested seafood and Harris Ranch meats. The burger here is hands down one of the best in the county. It is technically fast food, but nothing like what you would expect from that term. AJ's goes way beyond typical gas station fare. You will find organic produce and treats from around the world like English biscuits, real maple syrup, and a Southeast Asian spice rack. They also offer an impressive selection of local wines, baked goods, ice creams, and coffees. Owner Akhtar Javed, originally from Pakistan, opened the market in 1987 after falling in love with Santa Cruz. He became a local legend after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake when he let customers take what they needed and pay later during the power outage. Upon arrival, the price in the case did not reflect the sale price mentioned on their website. When I mentioned this to the guy helping me, he shrugged. Then another guy came out from the back (he must have heard the conversation) and said that the prices online were from yesterday (!) For the $5 off a pound that these two were unwilling to honor or even apologize about, they lost a customer. Good thing Shoppers Corner has great fish at better prices.
