Peter Piper picked a peck of purple peppers…read more Wait? What did Peter Piper pick? Purple peppers? I kid you not! Okay, maybe it wasn't Peter Piper who picked them, but he could have had he visited the Nunez Farm. It's a fact that purple bell peppers have been around since the mid-80's, but this was the first time I've ever walked upon rows upon rows of them in a field. The purple bell peppers are just one of the crops being harvested at Guillebaldo Nunez' vegetable farm in Watsonville. Artichokes Basil Bell Peppers (Green) Broccoli Butter Lettuce Cabbage (Green) Carrots Celery Collard Greens Fennel Heirloom Tomatoes Kale (Green) Leeks Pink Swiss Chard Potatoes Purple Kale Puple Thai Basil Rainbow Swiss Chard Red Beets Red Cabbage Red Lettuce Swiss Chard White Corn Yellow Swiss Chard Zucchini That's just a fraction of the crops being grown on the Nunez Farm, and it's all organic! That's right! Pesticide and chemical free! When our bus driver missed his turn Guillebaldo jumped into his truck and drove out to the main road to escort our bus into his farm. We were there for the last stop on on our education-filled farm tour. The Nunez Farm is incredible in size, and all of the crops are sold in farmers markets throughout Northern California and at Whole Foods stores under the brand "ALBA Organics". Guillebaldo walked us out to his fields to show us the rainbow of Swiss chards that he has planted. Green, orange, yellow, red, pink - just a variety of colors. I had never seen the yellow ones before and I was fascinated by them. On the same field were green and purple kale. I'd never had kale before and sampled some right there as a leaf was pulled off a plant and passed around to sample. We learned about the nutritious aspect of the kale as well as planting techniques and even ways to cook them. On the opposite side of the field were rows upon row of gigantic heirloom tomatoes hanging on thin sturdy vines. We were told that the fruits had just been picked that morning, but Guillebaldo told us that if we found any other ripe ones in there we were welcomed to pick it. Some of our group got really lucky when Guillebaldo found a whole plant unpicked. I missed out as I had stopped to take photos of big green tomatoes. To the opposite side of the tomato crops was a huge eye opener as we saw a gigantic color-filled farm that seemed to stretch forever. Guillebaldo gave us a quick rundown of all of his crops back there and offered to pick whatever our group requested. His generous offer turned up big red beets, ripe artichoke and handfuls upon handfuls of traditional green and Thai purple basil. The hit of the farm was the beautiful purple bell peppers. Guillebaldo said these were a first-time crop for him and he welcomed us onto the field to pick our own. He cracked one open, broke it into several pieces and passed it around for us to sample. The meat is slightly thinner than that of a green bell pepper, but these were so much sweeter. I might have missed out on the tomatoes but no way did I miss out on these. Time wasn't on our side; otherwise, we might have walked off with a lot more fresh produce than we did. A big thanks goes to Guillebaldo Nunez for opening up his farm to us. My best friend loves strawberries! Her family loves…read morestrawberries! My friend's daughter loves strawberries! Did I miss anyone?! Is that all they grow? Absolutely not but, during summer months... well, it's all about the strawberries. Been buying from them at the Ferry Farmers Market for the better part of two or three years now and, hands down, I only need to come here when it comes to strawberries. The two ladies who are there, rain or shine, always know what I want. Shopping for the above and my family, I often ask them to save a case for me on the Tuesdays and Saturdays that they are there. For my family, one member likes to pair them with ice cream (is he British, strawberries and cream?) while the other is just fine with it as is. Just rinse, peel, the leaves, and prepare for a delicious bite or two or three. I am of the latter, putting them in a mug and snacking as I watch TV. I also buy their baby carrots which come in a variety of multi color (purple mix) and traditional orange. They also have squashes and varieties of green beans (Blue Lake, Romano, etc.) when in season. But, when you line up to shop here, most customers are there to buy none of the things that I mention. They are there to get their flowers which come in bunches and which they individually wrap. Sorry, I'm not exactly the romantic type these days being sheltered... kidding. Let's just say that I don't have an appreciation for flowers as much as I should. When you're at the Ferry Farmers Market, be sure to stop here for any of the items that I mention. Afterwards, you'll know why.

The limited jars are usually by the pay counter, so you have to go early to make sure you get one when it's tomato season. It's soooo scrumptious... I have to resist all temptation at devouring the entire jar in one sitting. I can eat it as a meal with tortilla chips. No exaggeration!

We almost solely buy organic in our household, and know that organic produce usually has a shorter shelf life. However, when we brought our strawberries home they were completely molded within 18 hours. As we are both microbiologists (w/ my fiancee specifically being a food microbiologist), we take the utmost precautions and steps to try to best preserve the quality of our produce. Seeing as this was our regular spot, my fiancee emailed them to tell them about the situation. The owner advised us to not buy from them again and insinuated we stored them incorrectly. He also mansplained what organic means as if I do not come from a family of farmers. Honestly, super disappointed with this farm and how they conduct business. We would've been more than happy to continue being a loyal customer if the owner wasn't so condescending and rude.

I was amazed that there was an entire shop dedicated to all things mushroom, and then I saw that they served food too! I love mushroom, and when I couldn't get this place out of my mind, I had to head here before leaving town in the morning. Once this placed opened in the morning, we were the first one in. Got to try their truffle oil and sit down for a morning brunch. This isn't your typical brunch place, it was just the time I was there to eat. I tried their empanada, mushroom soup, and then their truffle mushroom grilled cheese, and I have to state that it was the best grilled cheese sandwich I have ever had. My mouth is still watering thinking about that sandwich. I picked up some items to go such as truffle oil and dried mushroom and was on my way. The shop is small and there is only counter space to eat, but the shop is so cute tucked away near a neighborhood street. I can't wait to go back here if I ever have the chance again.

Be prepared to get misted on in the rooms/caves. They had a great potluck after. Definitely bring chairs, blankets and even a card table as there is very limited seating. Anything goes on what to bring for the potluck. Main dishes, sides, salads, desserts, vegetarian and vegan foods. Or bring wine or other beverages to share. Wine was much appreciated. I even saw kombucha there but it went fast. It was well organized and different foods kept replenishing the tables. There were close to 250 people there but there was plenty of food. They provided a big selection of grilled mushrooms and chicken. Also paper plates, utensils and napkins. We'll be back and will bring our picnic basket, table and chairs.

I meant to update this review, but forgot. In my previous review, I mentioned that I was keeping my…read moresubscription despite the decline in variety and service because I had purchased bulk king salmon which supposedly they were keeping in storage for me, and I was requesting deliveries of several fillets every couple of months. In March 2024, I received an email saying that they needed to clear out their bulk storage, and I had the option of receiving all of my salmon at once, or with each regular delivery until it's all gone. I was to reply within a week or the remainder of my supply would be donated. I replied saying sure, send some of it with each regular delivery, to which they replied: "Unfortunately, the season has been closed since last year but, we can definitely send Sockeye or Coho salmon instead." Turns out even though I paid for king salmon AND they claimed that they still had it and needed to clear out storage, they actually didn't have the amount all of their members had pre-purchased in storage, due to "quality concerns" beyond a certain period. Which they NEVER gave me any heads up about until this point. So when their email went out, the first handful of people to reply got the rest of the king salmon, and they wanted me to accept a different variety instead. A couple of months and over a dozen emails later, I finally received a refund for the rest of the salmon I thought I had bought. I'm very disappointed in how this situation was handled. While I see that they now explain the terms more clearly for their bulk sales, with the prioritization of ad-hoc sales over regular subscriptions for product variety and quality, I don't see the value of this service anymore compared to buying fish from my local farmer's market.
