I just started Sam's program but I'm already in love. She uses a holistic approach so right away I realized that all areas of my life are connected to my health and symptoms. Some of the information seems obvious and simple, which is all the more reason to wonder why I haven't been doing it?! I've been watching my weight steadily increase over the years. I drew the line in the ground saying I wouldn't cross XX lbs. Low and behold I would cross it each time I set a new line. I finally hit 221 lbs and said that's it, I need to do something about it. That's when I stumbled across Sam at Happy Food Health Counseling. We set up a consultation and talked over my habits and goals. What I like about what she had to offer was there's no pre-made food to buy, no fad diets, no special vitamins or any hidden selling agendas, simply consulting in private or group sessions of which I chose the group for accountability reasons. I've listened to what Sam had to say and have changed my habits just enough where I can still eat the foods I love (I love food!) (in moderation of course) and have been able to consistently lose weight. So far, and this is only one month in, I've lost 10 lbs. I weighed myself today and was at 211.6 lbs, two belt notches less and the gym pants tie strings are much longer now. I'll be posting another review in about a month when I have more progress. What I thought would take 6 mos to a year has gone by much quicker than ever anticipated. So for the progress I have at the moment, THANK YOU Sam! I can't wait to get to my ideal weight. We were able to bounce off our experiences with each other, share our successes from the previous session, put forth new goals and watch each others' progress as we continued down the path to losing weight. I've been working with Sam for about 3 months now, and she's been awesome. She's extremely knowledgeable, and she's the perfect balance of holding me accountable (to my own goals), but also knowing when to have patience with me. :) For example, I have an extremely busy schedule & I don't like cooking (not an ideal client for a health counselor!), so Sam has gone above & beyond to bring me easy healthy recipes, and she's pushed me out of my comfort zone to try new things... but she doesn't freak out if I eat a cookie. I stumbled upon Happy Food Health Counseling on Yelp and calling Sam up for help was honestly one of the best decisions I have ever made. I've been overweight for most of my life and after working out for a few months on my own and gaining some confidence, I took the initiative to make an appointment and try out something new. Since starting Sam's program my entire lifestyle has changed for the better. We set goals and work on achieving them, Sam is an amazing motivator and she is not at all pushy. She has introduced me to many new foods (my favorite part of the entire program); I went from eating out almost daily to really becoming conscious of what I put into my body, not to mention my cooking skills have greatly improved under her tutelage. So far I have lost about 15 pounds in 2 months, I am in the best physical shape of my life and still getting better every day. I think that the changes Sam helped me make to both my eating habits *and* my lifestyle will stay with me a long time. She really opened my eyes to the lack of 'good' food available at most chain grocery stores, as well as the simple fact that a healthy diet does not need to mean that everything has to taste bad. For me Sam is more than a nutritional counselor, although she did share with me loads of healthy recipes, alternative food ideas, and interesting eating tips. I researched this program out of desperation. Before I linked up with Sam I was on high dose of oral steroids for autoimmune disease, binge eating, and had a negative self image. I wasn't happy. Fast forward six months and I haven't had a binge episode. Also, I'm down to the lowest dose of meds I've been on in three years. I met with Sam a while back. I was offered a "healing" and a "support" system for nutrition. I wasn't sure what that meant, but I thought I'd give it a try because she seemed genuine! During our meeting I received no answers to my questions. After she finished asking her variety of personal questions, I was still unsure what she offered or how she could help. I was then asked to sign-up for a paid "package". Still, I thought I'd give her another shot, so, I invited her to do a lecture at my office, but I noticed her doing the same thing, which is trying to get people to sign-up and pay for a package, rather than giving the information she advertised she'll speak about. During her lecture at my office she asked some questions on what people wanted, but, unfortunately she never gave any answers. She merely asked them to sign-up, and pay, in order to receive her information, or "healing", as she puts it. Since couple of years, I have food intolerance of which symptoms are really frustrating. I have seen several doctors/nutritionists before but they could not help me at all. When I learned about Sam's program I was skeptical at first since she said she did not work with someone who had this problem before and she could not give me a medication. However we wanted to give a try as her approached made a lot of sense to me. I have been working with Sam for 2 months; I am on a very strict diet (elimination diet) to figure out which food causes me all the symptoms that I have . This is very tiring and frustrating process, however it has been a lot easier with Sam. There were several moments that I was really frustrated and felt down but Sam really knows how to be patient and how to treat me during those moments. She is very supportive, understanding, listens her clients (not like other health counselors/doctors who think they know the best but have no idea how the patients really feel), she really wants you recover and she is really good at what she does. I learned how important it is to focus on primary food for a healthy body&mind. She definitely helped me to focus on primary food rather than the food I eat which is secondary food, I like this approach as I noticed all my symptoms are not only related to food but also exercise, mind, emotions, stress, relationships, career, spending some time just for yourself, relaxing&mediation, being happy,etc..She starts from the very beginning without making pressure on you and she really understands/ knows your limits (she is very good listener) and wants you to notice it. Every time I talk to her I learn sth new&helpful for me and I like when she brings samples/books/cds:-) From my own experience, I can say that once your body is out of balance, its really hard to get in balance again but not impossible, it just takes time. Currently, on this program I am missing medication/supplements which forces me to work with a doctor to get my body into balance again; however I now know that focusing on the secondary food wont help me alone. I looked forward to sharing my successes and hearing the successes of those in my class. I've learned to be more aware of what I'm eating by looking at labels, avoiding processed foods, and saying no to unhealthy options that others may be eating. I met Sam at a networking event. One of her former students interrupted us to give her a hug and tell her how well he was doing on his new food lifestyle long after his program with her had ended. I have been working with Sam for almost four months now. I am so thankful I found her on yelp! I have struggled with severe stomach pains for many years now and have always been confused about what foods are right for me. Doctors would always just hand me lists of good and bad foods and it was always very confusing.
