We finally lucked out and ended up with a Jindo (a rare and expensive breed) from the most unlikely of places...the Clarke County AS in Berryville. Granted, you're not likely to find a Jindo there. What you will find is a hardworking and dedicated staff, and animals that are receiving the finest of care possible (it is, AFAIK, a no-kill shelter). Unfortunately, they are operating in a cramped facility, but they make the most of it and volunteers help stem the costs. The animals there need care and a loving home and if you can give one, I highly recommend this shelter.

The two gals that work there were super accommodating and helpful both days I visited. I took our very timid beagle to see how he would respond to a potential adoptee. The gals helped with each new request: dog and cat relationship/dog and dog relationship, dog and human relationship.... We left less than 24 hours ago and already know we hit the doggy JACKPOT! She's a five-month old St. Bernard-Mastiff mix, very willing to please, is comfortable in a crate, is essentially potty-trained and quiet all night, is quickly learning to come when called, and we don't even have her on a leash in the yard as she explores. We couldn't be happier with the adoption fees and ease of process in getting her chosen and home with us. Thank you for providing this great service and another wonderful pet!

All the cats are very friendly and were super affectionate. There are two floors to spend your time -- the first floor is all adult cats, and also where the gift shop is located. The second floor holds more space to play with the adult cats, as well as a separate, sectioned off kitten room. When we were there, the kitten room was very full of guests, so we stuck to the other areas with the adult cats. The staff was so kind and knowledgable. They will tell you about any of the many cats that are walking around, including their names, personalities, and story. The gift shop proceeds go to keeping the cats there at the rescue, so of course, we bought some small toys to bring home to our cat. It is so admirable to see a group committed to rescuing these beautiful cats!

A few interesting facts: - They rescue neglected/abused animals including dogs, cats, potbellied pigs, and more. - Their operating costs are $25k + monthly - Must make an appointment for a visit or group tour - Some of the rescues they take in are animals that were previously used for racing, fighting, etc. Some of the cats & dogs came from animal hoarders. You will find that a visit to the farm is very humbling. For many of us, it's out of sight, out of mind when it comes to animal cruelty. We just don't think about it on a daily basis but when you visit the farm & hear the stories & see firsthand the effects of what these animals have been through, it can be life changing. Overall, a wonderful place to bring a group of kids, adults or just gather some friends for a fun & enlightening afternoon.

Horrible experience -- truly at a loss for words…read more Our application was initially denied because our cat wasn't spayed. Fine. We immediately scheduled the spay for the very next morning. Then suddenly, they claimed our landlord said there was a two-cat maximum. When we called our landlord ourselves, he not only denied this to them but confirmed the lease says no such thing. So why lie? What should've taken one simple call turned into a series of frustrating and unnecessary hoops caused entirely by their disorganization and lack of communication. Their condescending, "we know best" attitude creates more barriers than bridges -- and ultimately prevents animals from finding loving homes. Despite knowing we lived an hour and a half away, they waited until 30 minutes before our cat was done with surgery -- meaning she would've waited over an hour for us to get there-- just to tell us the cat we'd applied for was adopted by someone else. Luckily, we were only 15 minutes away at that point. They insisted they "don't hold applications," yet somehow ours remained active during this whole process. And their excuse? "We couldn't guarantee you'd come back." While our 9-year-old cat was in their surgical suite. None of it makes sense. None of it felt fair. The lack of logic, empathy, or even basic organization was astounding. Save your time, money, and emotional energy. Go with Save Our Strays or literally any other rescue that's actually focused on matching animals with loving families -- not gatekeeping adoption with made-up rules and callous behavior.
