    Our Farm Christmas Trees

If you're on the hunt for a live Christmas tree in the Oak Grove area of the Twin Cities, Our Farm…read moreChristmas Tree Farm is the place to go! A father and sons establishment, Our Farm has been 15 years in the making. The Ritcher family started planting trees in 1998 on their property with several varieties--Balsamic and Fraser firs or Scotch, White, and Norway pines. They offer cut-your-own or pre-cut! My family grew up with the lovely smell of pine in the house around Christmas time, and it has been a continued tradition to trek out into the woods and cut a tree ourselves. At Our Farm, you have the option to walk all around the 40 acres to hunt for your preferred tree, or one of the sons can offer to drive you into the back area (where all of the biggest and best trees can be found.) We were pleasantly surprised by the selection. We had trouble deciding because every tree seemed like the perfect one. I think the best part though was getting to enjoy the beautiful property. When we settled on the perfect tree, the Ritchers shook the excess needles off and bailed it for us. They even were kind enough to assist in tying it down to our truck's roof. The Ritchers were folksy and incredibly pleasant to chat with, telling the story of his grandad was a tree farmer elsewhere in Minnesota and they wanted to continue the family tradition. Pop Ritcher has big plans for the Farm, hoping to have hay rides, hot cocoa stations, and toboggans to haul your tree up from the back woods. Really glad too that they were open just three days before Christmas. Many tree farms are closed by now. Their prices are fair for their trees. We got a huge Norway pine for $60! Be sure to make it your tradition for Christmas, to visit the Ritchers for your Christmas tree.

Beautiful pine trees, hot chocolate, hay rides--visiting Hansen Tree Farm to buy our Christmas tree…read moreis an annual tradition our family genuinely looks forward to! As a former Floridian, we had never visited a pine tree farm until moving to Minnesota. We first came across this one after booking a family photo shoot, and our photographer set the location here. Hansen Tree Farm does not do professional photography sessions, but they do allow outside professional photographers to bring clients for shoots, with pre-approved permission by the farm. When we arrived, we were immediately blown away by the beauty of the farm and the warmth of the staff. We liked it so much that we came back the very next day to pick out our tree. The farm is HUGE! Upon arrival, you're given a map and a saw. The staff is incredibly helpful and patient, always willing to guide you and answer questions. I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed during our first visit when I saw all the different tree types listed on the map. I had no idea there were so many varieties. We took our time wandering through the clearly labeled sections of the farm, followed the map, and slowly got familiar with the different species. Once you find the tree you love, you cut it yourself using the saw provided. From there, you carry it to your vehicle and drive slowly toward the exit signs. Attendants are usually driving around the farm if you need help. It's a short drive, and that's where staff shake the tree and securely tie it to your vehicle. All trees are priced the same, regardless of size or species. If you have time to hangout, purchasing a tree includes one free hot dog or sausage per person, redeemable inside the gift shop near the exit. Free hot chocolate and/or apple cider is also included. During colder months, there are mini bonfires set up for guests to sit around and warm up. A hay ride is also included which takes you around the entire farm. I've visited on days when they've outdoor glass blowing demonstrations and local musicians playing inside the gift shop. The trees themselves are wonderful. With proper care, ours have typically lasted over six weeks. The fresh pine scent fills the house and, while it softens over time, the tree never loses its beauty. Shedding varies depending on the species, at least that's what I noticed, but we've never dealt with excessive shedding, bugs, or anything unexpected while having the tree in our home. It's easy to turn the visit into a full experience. Even if you don't plan to buy a tree, Hansen Tree Farm is still worth the visit.

We purchased a Fraser Fir as we always have at other farms, got it shook and baled and brought it home. When I unbaled it the amount of needles that fell was horrendous and I should have know it was a sign of what to expect out of this tree. The needles continued to fall in the coming days as we hung ornaments and lights. I watered this tree religiously to maximize the life of it and it continued to shed its needles everywhere. 3 weeks after purchase and the needles were turning brown, very disappointed in the quality of this tree... I will never buy a tree from this farm again!!!

There was another employee that was helping another customer. 10 minutes went by before we were even acknowledged. There was another individual sitting on a bench presumably waiting also. Another 15 minutes went by before the lady asked if we were being helped. Obviously, we had not been helped yet. She tried providing some information on some fruit trees but didn't seem real knowledgeable. She didn't really tell us what the process was for actually going out to look at the trees and eventually buying them. From the looks of it we had to wait for the other employee to drive us out to the field. Some additional customers came in and no one acknowledged them either. We ended up walking out after about 30 minutes of waiting. It was the first nice Saturday of the spring and you would think they would have had sufficient staff on hand to attend to their customers. I was ready to spend $500 on some trees but they lost my business. We ended up going to Nelson's Nursery in Zimmerman. We walked in and a lady helped us within 2 minutes. She provided us with great service, was knowledgeable and we were in and out with 15 minutes with our new trees. Not sure how Wolcyn's can stay in business..
