Always happy to bring my own picnic to a vineyard and choose a bottle of a nice dry red or white. This has been one of my favorite lunch spots since I retired years ago. The owner is always very friendly and helpful in choosing one of their wines closest to your palette. My favorite of their dry reds is a Tempranillo...it's great with dark chocolate. My favorite go to of the white is the Pino Grigio...it's good with everything else!The wines are comparable to commercial wines (often much better) and the shaded patio looks into the vineyards. During the week it's a great place for "book club"... Take a friend or two or three and share a beautiful summer breeze, a picnic and a bottle of wine in Happy Valley! read more

Small inside and very personal attention. We were the only ones there and it was cozy and delicious. I love sweet wines and Happy Valley winery has a solid selection, most are award winners. I loved all of mine and bought the sweet Riesling. My husband drinks dry red and loved all of his tastings, too. I was here once before and sat outside and it was a beautiful day with views of the vineyard. As you wind through the development you might think you're going the wrong way but you're not. There's something to be said about visiting a locally owned, Mom and Pop winery. There's nothing quite like talking to a proprietor, who has their blood, sweat, and tears rolled into the success/failure of an endeavor. From the moment you walk through the door of Happy Valley Vineyard, you feel like you're stepping into a very quaint, but classy establishment. I had the privilege of talking to the owners/winemakers, and picking their brain for an hour. Not only is their story amazing, it gives you a deeper appreciation for the work that they're doing. What immediately stands out with each of the wines at Happy Valley is the uniqueness of flavor. For example, the Autumn Wood has a smokiness that you don't often find in a white varietal here in the states. The Goldfinch hits you with the unmistakable flavor of honey. The pepper of the Noiret immediately brings to mind pairings including steaks and red meats. Each wine takes an undeniable path of flavor on your tongue. The choices distinct, unique, and complex. This was a tremendous stop and a way to end our day of winery tasting in State College with a winery named "Happy Valley" which is what the area is recognized for what I found to be a reference read locally "Even though we're hours away from the sprawling metropolises of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, it doesn't feel like we're stuck in the middle of nowhere. The whole town buzzes with this amazing energy, a contagious mix of joy, dedication, good times, and hard work. We really do live in the happiest of valleys.", According to a Town & Gown Magazine article entitled "The Origins of Happy Valley," the phrase started with one man: Pat O'Brien. O'Brien and his family came to State College so he could finish his Ph.D. in speech communications, and he was later hired by the university as a speech instructor. For O'Brien and his wife Harriet, State College was an escape from the chaos and commotion of their lives. In fact, Pat O'Brien called State College his very own "Happy Valley." He used the term informally, throwing it around with his friends and family. So there you go on how we got to "Happy Valley" Let's talk about wine. We were greeted by a nice lady who asked us where we were from and what are plans were. She was one of two of the owners. She was very sweet. When we drove on our way here we drove through a new home area and said I bet the winery came first and then the housing, else the winery seen an opportunity and said stay at home moms need wine, let's make a winery :) After talking to the owner she said they were there 10 years before the homes were built. All of the wines that we sampled here were delicious. As you look at the photos, I had the Dry Reds Flight, and the Mrs. had the Dry White Flight. I truly loved the Chancellor and Noiret, and the Chambourcin was fantastic. I made a Chambourcin from Pennsylvania grapes and damn was that a difficult one to make. I give them credit they did well. My wife's favorites was the Cayuga and Riesling. The wines here were amazing, probably our best stop next to Nittany Wine Co. This is a definitely a place to come back to and try more wine again. Wow! This winery was BEAUTIFUL! My boyfriend and I stopped by for a taste of wine as we were in town visiting. We tried several of their dry wine options. The scenery is absolutely beautiful. It makes for a nice place to go on a date or simply meet up with family or friends. They definitely make it hard for you to choose your favor wine, however, my favorites were the blaufrankisch and the autumn wood. We also tried their white wine slushies which were soooo good! Very pretty location. Large cabin style place to sit in and drink wine. In warmer weather it looks like outdoor seating is available. The wine was pretty okay but the presentation was so cheap. Literally a piece of wood with holes drilled in it and plastic shot glass cups stuck in them. I guess it's fine if you're trying to attract college kids but most people want to drink wine from a glass- even for flights. Oh my goodness! Good luck choosing your favorite wine from Happy Valley Vineyard and Winery. There are so many options from delicate sweet whites to robust dry reds and in all price points. I enjoy many wines but lean towards dry whites HOWEVER I thoroughly enjoyed several of their premium dry reds. The small farm/ vineyard vibe is incredibly relaxing and refreshing considering it's proximity to downtown State College. The patio is THE PLACE to be when the weather warms and the vineyard is lush and green. Pack a picnic, grab a few friends, and buy a bottle or two to share. Pros: -Really cute patio on which it is great to sip on a bottle in the summer months (you can bring your own food for a picnic). -free tasting of 5 wines, excluding premium wines. Cons: -wine is pretty terrible -tasting does not include premium wines, which are the ones you really want, and each tasing of a premium wine costs $1. This is not a huge deal in and of itself, but other wineries in the area offer free tastings across the board (of much better wine, I will add), so it begs the question as to why should we visit this place? My kind boss took all of us here as a diversion during a conference in this town. Very tricky to get to, kinda behind a development and past a cul-de-sac on a winding tiny road. But you will recognize all the grape vines around. Large array of wines. I asked to taste the dry ones, and you get 5 tastes for free -- just mark on the sheet what you want. Since it was so hot, we were more in the mood for cold whites, and I found the Pinot Grigio and dry Riesling very good. I also liked the light dry red blend. You can buy a cute stemless logo glass for $5 and bring snacks or a lunch to eat inside or out on their back deck. My always-prepared boss had brought along guacamole and sprouted pretzels, so nice and actually perfect with the wines. The owner has a degree in grape viticulture and is very knowledgeable. Harley is the winery dog, and I was sad to see that he stayed in the winery barn and not the tasting room. My colleagues laughed as I kept asking if Harley was going to come in (hint, hint, please go get him), to no avail. All I got of him was a portrait on the wall. Super close to town--most people could ride a bike there. Small, clean, unpretentious. AND THE WINE. PA wines get a bad rap, but this stuff is much better than other local wines I've had. I'm a red drinker, and the Noiret was fantastic--a bright tart burst that wasn't sweet and that had a great finish. So great that I bought two bottles on the spot for later. Three sisters is a great blend that is a little drier and more evenly a dry red. Also loved the Autumn Wood--an oaked version of the Dry Cayuga--was great too. Note that you can just walk in and taste 5 wines for free. That should be enough to convince you to get a glass there or a bottle for home. If you decide to go, follow GPS or you will think you just got yourself lost. While driving through on vacation I randomly found this place on the internet. You have to take a dirt road after you drive through a housing development, but then it is super cute. They offer 5 free tastes per person off of a long list to choose from. My husband and I chose wisely so we could sample 10 different kinds before settling on which glass we wanted to purchase. Premium wines are an extra $1 each to taste and totally not worth it, so just try regular wines. Another reviewer said the staff was rude, but when I took my wife's parents to visit this place in August, the young man who helped us was very friendly and helpful. Well- where to start? I love wine & small wineries. But not this one. We arrived for the first time to a harried woman rushing us through the tastings so we wouldn't have to pay the fee that starts at 5:30. The tasting counter is small. Tastings, wines by the glass, & bottle sales all kind of form in the same area. The man working the register seemed a little lost & the harried lady had to help him a lot, pulling her away from the tasting counter. They vocally stated that previous customers shouldn't taste, just buy. The harried lady also didn't describe any of the wines, just pounded us through our little tastes. The wine wasn't that good. First, it must be said that the wine offered during the tasting here is just flat awful. My wife and I didn't find a single glass we enjoyed among reds and whites, both dry and sweet. This winery makes heavy use of French-American hybrids such as Cayuga, which many people don't care for, so be forewarned. However, what vaults this winery into all-time-worst-status is the woman who did our tasting. While I hope she was merely a fill-in part-time employee, I fear she may actually be the owner. She clearly didn't care about what she was doing or showing the basics of hospitality. Most people who work at wineries are cheerful and clearly love their work. But here, each time she poured a wine, she mechanically read off the name of the wine and then quickly walked away. She refused to offer us the vintage, varietal, how the wine was made, etc. Absolutely zero educational value. When we asked the most simple followup questions such as "Was this Chardonnay made in oak or stainless steel?" and "Which grapes were used in this rosé?" she scowled, sighed, and offered the bare minimum of information. News flash: any pourer with one week's experience should be be prepared to provide this and much more during each pour. By the end, we were laughing to ourselves about how bad she was. If I could give this establishment ZERO stars I would. Aside from being the only winery on our tour to REQUIRE A DEPOSIT, they were the absolute worst and rudest. From the second we pulled on to the property the "OWNER" was uninviting and miserable. Standing outside the door glaring and with her arms crossed. We had a large group and she wanted NOTHING TO DO WITH US. We made arrangements ahead of time and had to pay a deposit and yet they STILL WEREN'T prepared for us. After being rude and starting an argument with one of our crew she told us to "GET THE F**k out!!" Not one person was served and yet we still didn't get the deposit back. Our crew who spent at least $100 a person at each of our two previous stops between wine bottles to go and glasses and shirts, are a fun loving and lively crew. If you can't handle a lively crew please consider turning away all party buses and limos. I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU DO NOT CONSIDER THIS WINERY!! read more

They will give you a free tasting of an assortment of wines that interest you. Great place to go when you have people in from out of town, the building is new, clean and has seating in case you want to stop for a glass of wine as well. This place is kind of new and a lot of the wines are way too sweet in my opinion, but it is still a very beautiful place to sit outside and enjoy a glass of wine and a cheese plate with friends. The younger guy who did our tasting was super helpful and friendly. There is also a really cool dog that visited us outside at our table- certainly a plus. However, the older woman who seemed to be in charge was certainly very eager to get us out as closing time approached.
