I was most surprised by the selection of roasting joints they have on offer here. I bought a large side of beef for a Sunday roast and some pork scratchings for the journey home. The pork scratchings were delicious and everyone enjoyed the beef on the day I cooked it. If there is a piece of meat there that is too big for your occasion then they will cut it down to a more ample size for you, no questions asked. I would be happy to come back here again because the quality of the meat is so good. I'm fed up with pre wrapped meats in supermarkets so I need a good selection of butchers close to my home. This place starts and finishes earlier than its rival around the corner, and if you go in after 3pm you are more than likely to find them clearing up for the day as they close at 4pm. Most of the meat is prepared on the premises and they even make their own sausages from time to time. Their beef and lamb mince is always of a really high quality, as you will see when you cook it and hardly any fat is created. Their best product, though, is their bacon, which is thick and very, very tasty. They also carry a selection of pies and pasties, smoked cheeses, plus sauces and condiments for cooking meat. In the summer they do an excellent range of meats for use on the BBQ. At Christmas and Easter time the queue is often out the door, and the shop is often busy on Saturday mornings, which should tell you that this is a place much admired by the locals round these parts. In these days of cellophane packaged supermarket goods, the market produce can seem very daunting. After some hints from Mum and watching her in action, I went for it at A P Doherty's. I wanted to write this review to recommend them because of the amazing deal we got. I think Ryan (the guy behind the counter) mistook my hesitancy for reluctance to spend, whereas I was trying to work out what he was talking about and whether I was getting good value. There are loads of butchers and poultry specialists but these guys gave great value. I got so much chicken and gammon for £20 that the bag burst carrying it to the car.
