This is an adorable brunch place in Carbondale. Very relaxing atmosphere and warm colors. The servers are super friendly and helpful. I ordered their blueberry pancake and holy cow it was huge and cooked to perfection! Their side of fruit was fresh and their coffee is pretty good. They actually leave a pot of coffee on your table. Our party of 6 arrived at the crack of noon, only because our hotel kicked us out at 11pm. obviously hungover from staying out late the night before. Great waiter (can't remember her name, blond, sweet, funny) had carafes of coffee wine decanters of iced lemon water on the table immediately, what a godsend. Everyone's food was cooked to perfection; crunchy cheese that melted off the omelets, perfectly cooked toast, bacon that was crunchy without being overcooked; beautifully basted eggs that looked like jewels. Was also impressed with some of the original artwork (paintings and photos) donated by appreciative artists. I mean, some of the work was really fine, not that kitchy stuff people in most places will toss up on their walls and call it art. Obviously, there are artists around who have a lot of love for this place, and I can see why. No wait for us, food came in a timely manner. They hard-boiled a couple of eggs for me since I have celiac disease and can't eat in a lot of places; I felt very safe doing that since I'm extremely sensitive to gluten. The rest were eating like kings, though, and the coffee was great. Huge portions, and we were lucky enough to have cash on us. I have only ate breakfast at Harbaugh's, but must say they do breakfast right. When I moved home to Southern Illinois from South Texas I really missed my morning huevos rancheros. Harbaugh's opened and when I went in to check it out I saw they had huevos rancheros on the menu. They did it as good (maybe better) than any restaurant in San Antonio. Clean with a nice atmosphere. Must agree with the Kilo T Man, awesome and rad, because those coffee cups rocked! I had the Avocado and tomato omlette, and the coffee could not stop pouring. The service, great, the "cook" yeh, she's cool as beans and she came out and was about while I was visiting, a few tables down but she rocked! The décor was tops and the food just as well. Parking ample out back, cheery and visually appealing but not too over powering. Very expected for a "college town" type great breakfast joint. First time in Carbondale and I must say, the food, flavor and atmosphere of this little southern town has knocked my "birks" off....thanks to everyone who made my visit enjoyable, fun and extremely memorable. This place is famous in the Dale. Carbondale loves local businesses and the food has some variety, which I respect. However, it's packed on weekends and you best get there early if you don't want to wait for 30-45 minutes. This is hangover heaven and everyone you saw at Pinch or Tres last night will be waiting for a table. I have been here nearly each time I come into Carbondale. It's honestly the best breakfast place I have ever been to. Forget Denny's or ihop. This place has such good prices for the quality and quantity of food you get. The potatoes are the best damn breakfast potatoes I have ever eaten. Service is usually pretty good and quick. Not a lot of breakfast places in Cdale, so Harbaugh's often wins just due to default. The food isn't great, and they only take cash, so it's often an aggravating place to go. A lot of the food seems to be frozen or canned food service crap. Toast is often barely cooked, potatoes overcooked or limp after sitting too long. "Fresh" stuff, like avocadoes, are often too soft and brown. Coffee is burnt. Service is hit and miss, though friendly. I think they might suffer some from the new IHOP that opened, where, if the food isn't that much better, at least it's consistent and they take payments in the 21st century rather than the 19th. read more

So four of us came here for Sunday brunch on a friend's recommendation while we were visiting from out of town. There was a line out the door and one of us went inside to see about getting on the list. We found out quickly that it was cash only (should've checked Yelp first!) so we had to leave to find an ATM. The woman took our friend's name and told her she would keep our place while we ran to get cash. Some of the patrons in line with us were very unhappy at this arrangement. When we got back about 15 minutes later, we edged our way inside and stood for a few minutes until we caught sight of the nice waitress who had spoken with our friend. The whole time, people in line were complaining to people around them that this wasn't allowed, that they didn't take names. But the waitress found us a table within a few minutes and it wasn't a problem. The worst part was just that others were complaining. I was really happy that the restaurant staff was accommodating. When we were seated, we ended up getting the friendliest waitress I think I've ever encountered. My receipt says her name is Lara M. She quickly brought us our own carafes of coffee (!!!!!!) as we looked over the menus. The other three people I was with got the omelets, which were enormous and apparently quite tasty. I got the blueberry pancakes, and they were absolutely wonderful. One of the really nice things about this place is that they let you do a la carte, so when we saw that there was some fancy pumpkin french toast, we ordered just one slice and shared it between all of us, and it was absolutely divine. I wish I could remember exactly what the flavor combination was (it's been a couple of months) but it was one of the specials on the board. Also, it's not the cheapest diner, but for the amount of food you get, it's very affordable. If we hadn't been driving back to Nashville, we all would have had plenty of leftovers to take with us. The only other thing that I would say is that you might have trouble getting a parking spot when it's busy. They share a lot with the Gaia House and we had trouble both finding a space and maneuvering the car into it. read more

Buyer Beware. Beware of the signs around you when you first walk in the doors. If you don't, you'll soon realize after you eat that they don't accept credit cards. If they would post the sign BIG AND BOLD on the outside doors for you to see before you walked in, then I wouldn't have walked in. Its kind of a trap. Because they have an ATM machine, more than likely owned by them in the restaurant so that they earn $2 from every transaction you're forced to make on it. The food isn't that great either. Its a greasy spoon with no character. Its bragged up by the locals, but its by far not worth going to. if you want to park in the back, bring some change because you'll be putting change in a parking meter. read more

I am updating this review due to a recent visit. I guess I took this place for granted when i lived in Cdale. Its cheap and the food is good. If there is one thing I love, its cats. But Harbaughs is a close second. I dig the Ranch Potatoes as well as the omlettes. Thousands of unborn chickens is a small price to pay for the best eggs in town. The coffee cups are rando and that makes for an interesting conversation piece. The people in the booth next to me usually don't appreciate the conversation, but if they didn't want to talk they wouldn't have set so close to me now would they? Home fries are my biggest pet peeve of a breakfast restaurant, but even my general feeling for them was let down by the room temperature, rubbery, god-awful things they put on my plate. The corned beef in the hash was okay but the packet of hollandaise sauce they whipped up tasted purely awful. I don't expect fresh made from scratch hollandaise at a dive like this, but I've used packet hollandaise at home myself in a pinch and it wasn't anywhere near the level of nasty this stuff was. If I ever have the pleasure of being in Carbondale again for breakfast, I'll pick anywhere else. read more

The food is usually really great, especially when it isn't crowded. It that's the case, then prepare to wait for whatever table opens up next. The floorplan is awkward as well as seating. It's also very loud, I mean; it will make the hair in your ears move noisy. Go early, wear earplugs and enjoy breakfast. Cofee is average with no option of truvia. Carbondale classic for sure...atmosphere and service are a solid 8/10. However, I'm not a fan of the food...there's just no spark when I eat at Harbaughs. Do I eat the food, yes...but I'm never blown away by the taste. It's convenient to have someone cook for you, but I've made better in my own kitchen. I went as part of a group, everyone's dishes looked great and we all liked them. Plenty of options on the menu. The coffee definitely could be better, but they are served in individual mugs that clearly have been part of an eclectic collection for a long time, it's very charming to see what mug you and your friends get. This has got to be my all time favorite breakfast place!!! I've eaten here 3 times over the year that my son has been at SIU and every time was fantastic. The service is awesome and the food is delicious and very reasonable. The decor is eclectic and very comfortable. I love their mugs which are anything and everything. My son's mug today was one from a company that my husband used to work for. I asked if they accept donations and our waitress said Absolutely! Outside of the restrooms, the walls are covered in postcards from everywhere. If you're looking for fancy, this is not your place. But if you want good food and service in a fun atmosphere, try It! We enjoyed our Sunday morning breakfast at this local diner near the SIU campus. Picked place based on Yelp and desire to avoid chains. It was busy at 8:30 am but we were seated promptly. Service was good. I had the biscuits and sausage gravy with two eggs and potatoes. The B&G were good, eggs prepared as ordered, I was not a fan of the home fries. This is my favorite place for breakfast! If you are looking for a great breakfast with a laid back, eclectic vibe, this is the place! The decor features local art, mismatched, fun chairs, and coffee cups with a ton of different themes. They also take credit cards now, which is a plus.
