I've been training martial arts over 25 years and the only problems I've ever had have been with the IMB Academy. The head instructor Steven is a nice guy, but he simply has no business being the leader of such a school after the great Richard Bustillo passed. He's apathetic/oblivious and poor at communication and follow up. The final straw for me was when me and my training partner had a scheduled call to discuss our training and Steven completely flaked and never called. I then emailed him to tell him I'm done, and of course he didn't care or inquire as to why I'm done, especially after I had been so dedicated to the IMB. Look elsewhere if you are a serious martial artist and avoid IMB at all costs!

Let me start by saying that Professor Paul Lansang is an accomplished competitor and representative…read moreof the art, as evidenced by his countless medals displayed in the academy. Previously I spent five years at another school, but left when this school opened around the corner from my home. I have been coming here for over three months now and was welcomed into the fold right from the get go. No one has ever displayed any negative ego of any sort. To be honest, it is insanely refreshing to experience such a warm, welcoming atmosphere where you feel comfortable in your growth as a student. Paul is genuinely interested in each students growth, and gives the perfect amount of technical, detailed instruction, but with the right push to encourage you to get better every class. He teaches every single class and is extremely involved in each student's development. As a blue belt, I find it amazing how many little details I was not taught at my previous school, and how my game has improved tremendously in these past few months training here. But make no mistake, here, we work HARD. The evening Adult Classes usually run anywhere from 2-3.5 hours, and in that time, we jog around the mat to warm up, then perform dynamic warm ups that start with bear crawls, but can end with Judo throws, or various guard passes. We Drill To Kill here, which ingrains it into our memory and provides excellent conditioning. After that we break off into pairs and learn the sequence of the day, which can be a positional variation, submission or chain of submissions, guard, pass, or sweep. Paul takes extra care to make sure the students understand not only the technique and its required movement, but WHY this technique would be applied. The last hour or so is hard rolling. Here, we are encouraged to compete, not only to represent our academy, but to also show each individual student how they can improve by testing themselves. In dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic, they have been very responsible and in line with the State and County Directives, initially offering Classes in an appointed time window for small groups as to limit the exposure for families. As the restrictions relaxed, the schedule opened up and the academy grew. There is a required exposure and symptom questionnaire to fill out upon arrival, and your temperature is checked as well. There are also hand sanitizer dispensers available. The mats are cleaned and disinfected regularly, and are well padded. There is about 3inches of puzzle mat as a base layer, with a new Tatami textured roll up mat laid over top. We do takedowns everyday, and I have always felt like the mat can handle the impact. I've only been a student here for a short time, but the camaraderie and brotherhood I've experienced here, the technical expertise in the instruction, combined with the personal hands-on approach from Professor Paul Lansang that reflects on the entire school has made my experience there amazing & extremely special. I absolutely recommend Lansang Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!!

She had tried other martial arts classes in the past but couldn't get past the trial class because she was terrified of the instructor and the environment. Coach Paul is not only an incredible instructor but also very welcoming. My child had so much fun in her very first class, and now, almost two years later, she's still going strong and has even participated in two competitions. She's developing strong jiujitsu skills while having fun, which is a win-win for us as parents. Her training friends are also respectful and friendly. It really feels like one big family here.

When we first started dating, he told me about Lyoto, and it felt like destiny that our son would one day train at a place tied to someone we both respected. Back then, the youngest age accepted was 4, so I had to wait patiently. When my son was 3.5, I reached out to the dojo to plan ahead, and that's when I met Sensei Caroline the sweetest, most professional guide you could hope for. I also had the honor of meeting Chinzo Machida. He is incredibly humble and professional, even with a 4-year-old student, which immediately put me at ease. My son absolutely loved his time there. He would talk about it constantly, excited for every lesson, every practice. Unfortunately, after about two months, I realized he wasn't quite ready for the level of discipline and structure required yet, and I didn't want him or the class to struggle. I spoke with Sensei Caroline honestly, and she was completely supportive, encouraging us to return when the time felt right. This academy deserves every ounce of respect and recognition. The environment, the instructors, and the care they put into their students are truly exceptional. I can't wait for the day we come back and fully experience all that Machida Academy has to offer.

From the very first class, the instructors made her feel comfortable, supported, and excited to learn. They strike a perfect balance between discipline and encouragement, firm when they need to be, but always positive and patient. What really stands out is how intentional they are about teaching both skill and character. My daughter is already showing more confidence, focus, and respect at home, and she looks forward to every class (which says a lot!). The lessons are well-structured, engaging, and age-appropriate, and the instructors truly take the time to help each student improve at their own pace. The academy itself is clean, organized, and clearly run with a lot of pride. Parents get a great view of the classes, and it's easy to see how much care and attention goes into each session.
