The Latin pop singer Giovanna mesmerized the crowd at the Chula Vista HarborFest at the Bayside Park. This beautiful lady has some serious chops! My only regret was that I had to stand in line for the porta-potty and miss part of the performance! At the HarborFest, there was awesome food, margaritas, Dos Equis Amber, singing talent...and NOT enough porta-potties, which is the only reason I'm giving the event a 4 instead of a 5. There wasn't any soap or hand sanitizer either. So I'll happily come back next year if they have this again...but I'm bringing my own hand sanitizer next time! We also had tickets for the SeafoodFest Tasting, part of the Chula Vista HarborFest. Thanks to rad Brad, our tickets were complimentary. It was fun to taste samples of seafood from the many vendors! My 2 overall favs were the marvelous cannelloni provided by Savoie, and the excellent seafood bisque offered by Finch's Bistro and Wine Bar. I'm bookmarking these 2 vendors, so that I can visit their restaurants! (Finch's has a restaurant in La Jolla, and Savoie has a restaurant in Chula Vista. It was a gorgeous sunny day, with a breeze to keep us all cool in the August heat. Couldn't ask for better company when we ran into Jocelyn and Mark. (-; The views of the bay from the Bayside Park made me feel like I was on vacation! Woo-hoo for Chula Vista HarborFest!

    Deliciousness!

Even though the weather remained pretty gloomy throughout everyone seemed in good spirits (pun intended). While this is certainly one of the smaller beer festivals in the San Diego area, attendance was limited to 500 people, there was a good selection of local San Diego County Breweries, a few from further afield and even a couple from Europe. Everyone I spoke with seemed to be having a good time. My only complaint was the music was a bit loud and given the small footprint the actual festival took place in it was hard to get away from it. Admittedly none of the bands played music that was in any styles that I like so that may have affected my opinion here. However, I will say that at times having any kind of a conversation was pretty difficult. Bottom line: If you like beer keep an eye out for the Sophomore year of this festival around mid May of next year (and particularly if you live in the South County area this is the closest to home beer fest yet). Overall a great first try and a thumbs up to the people at the Third Avenue Village Association for putting this on. See ya' next year! Cheers!

The $12 tickets seems fair, until you realize all it gets you is in the door (after paying $20 in parking). There was not a significant amount of taco vendors and most were ridiculously overpriced ($20+ for three tacos) and had similar quality to what you might find at a county fair. As for the tequila tastings, its seems they instructed all the vendors to portion out .5oz shots to pour into your tasting glass and you only get six of these pours for the low price of $50! (+fees). Want a margarita? Well it seems like they may have whispered a bit of tequila into the sugary mess they poured into your cup. Well you know what you're getting with beer right? They'll happily sell you a Tecate for $12 and it wont even be on draft. Better value can honestly be found at Petco Park. Even finding a place to sit was harder than it should have been as there were way less tables in the eating are then there were people in attendance. We shared a table with some fellow festival goers, who were also disappointed in the cold, soggy carne asada fries they were served. No one deserves that. I would highly recommend this festival to anyone who hates money. And themselves.

I really liked how there were multiple stages with performances that range from mariachi, DJs playing 80s music, live band, and dancers. They were all very entertaining. This was a family event that had a huge section dedicated just for kids. They had arts and crafts, games, bouncers, slides, and many more! I liked how there were many props and backdrops for photo ops. Where the event fell a little short for me was the food. I guess somehow I was expecting to see a lot of vendors selling lemon themed food, desserts, and beverages. There were a few vendors who sold lemon cookies and cakes, but it was far and few in between. Overall, I had fun and would go again next year! Parking wasn't so bad since I parked in a residential area and walked a few blocks.

Overall, I really enjoyed the experience. Pros: lots of alcohol, super friendly vendors, San Pellegrino everywhere to keep you hydrated, nicely decorated with Day of Dead photo ops, fresh hot tacos (all delicious) with fancy toppings, restaurants from TJ, Mexicali, SD, variety of tacos from lengua to Thai to ahi to salmon, free parking, nice variety of alcohol from sangria to beer to wine to hard cider. Cons: long lines, waste of plates, no table tops/belly ups or seats unless part of VIP section, no dessert booths, lots of empty booths and/or vendors ran out of food before 2:00. But getting to go for free makes me even embarrassed to bring up the cons. Truly it was a great event. Liberty Station was a great venue for this because it was spacious for the amount of people in attendance. Tix were sold out. Parking is easy and free. Only caveat: I didn't check out restrooms or see them but I do wish there were handwashing stations around. Some vendors were eating with the same gloved hands they were serving from.

I was able to get a really solid 3 meat sampling of Chamorro (Guamanian) food for $25, which came with a red rice, 3 meats, and creamy greens. Lines could be pretty long for food and it can get pretty hot at the park; however, we had a good time as we were here in the morning before the sun brought down its wrath on the crowds. We parked for free at the Sun Runner Parking lot off Sea World Parkway, and they had shuttles that took you to the event from the lot for $2 per person. If you are coming to this event, then I think this is a great way to get to the event. The event is running through the end of this weekend. We've participated in Thrill The World, played zombie kickball, been featured on San Diego Living & Fox 5 Morning News, entertained Ocean Beach with undead caroling for the holidays, helped promote Zombieland (which made the front page of CNN.com), appeared in a music video for Rat City Riot, partied at the House of Blues, and in 2009 held our third walk at Comic-Con (a tradition we don't intend to break - especially since we were considered one of the "ten essential Comic-Con must-sees" for 2009, according to the LA Times) and helped take over Hollywood for a night.
