Patrick took us to Sandstonia for a great day of top roping, getting a feel for the rock, and trying a variety of styles of climbing here. He also took us through ground school on setting up/cleaning anchors to help reinforce things we learned prior, but haven't really had a chance to put to use. He was super informative about going through the different bolting/cleaning/general climbing ethics of this area, since it's different from where we're from. He also showed us a great app for birding. He was thorough, educational, and overall really encouraging when I was trying to work my way up the rock. Cool guy and apparently a really cool DJ too. Note: we did not play music or sound pollute the crag. This was just a fun fact I learned. Nina took us to Lower Meadows on day 2 to help us practice lead climbing and cleaning routes. She also reviewed trad placements with us and we were able to practice a variety of things on Baby Trad. I'm now obsessed with chicken head rock formations because of her. Then we went to Junkyard to end the day top roping so we could just see more climbing areas. She also taught us a lot about the different plants/trees in the area here. Overall she was super energetic and really supportive. A great hype person. Everything you'd want when you're trying new things or trying to push yourself. You could tell both really love climbing and really enjoy guiding at New River. Would recommend planning a day with this guiding company and if we ever plan another trip here, we'll definitely work with them again

I can't recommend them enough. Nina, our guide, was a wealth of knowledge about climbing, and the area, and rock climbing in the park. She was great teaching and helping me and my teen climb - she's great with kids, asking good questions. The reservation, meet up, and day of climbing were all well organized and communication was excellent. It was great value for the money paid. We climbed some incredible rock faces and my teen was stoked to have accomplished so much in our day of climbing, Nina made it fun. The amount of time was perfect, about 8-4:30 to get a full day of climbing in and still have fun. The town of Fayetteville is cute and would like to go back and explore, including the NRMG store. Everyone is laid back and helpful. Like I said, their customer service it top notch, I hope they are in business for a long time! We can't wait to get back down to West Virginia and climb with NRMG again!!!

Since COVID-19 we were unsure of what we could discover that would be safe and interesting for them. We were amazed at our Outside In experience! Every level of climber is accommodated. The staff cheered on the young, tentative climber while also showing our "bell-ringer" how to reach all the bells at the end of the climbs. This facility was very safe. Again, the owners seemed to be concerned not just with providing a fun activity but doing it in a quality way. The trip was planned via email and they were really flexible with us rescheduling due to a rainy forecast. It did end up raining the day of our trip, but our instructor (Dave Wolff) was great and brought us to a place with overhanging rock so we could climb in dryer conditions. He was really great at explaining different techniques, how all the gear works and was very encouraging. We spent more time climbing than I had expected which was great! It was definitely worth the trip and I can't wait to get back out there.

We took a family vacay to New River Gorge National Park in August and we love chasing waterfalls,…read moreso we went looking for Butcher Branch Falls located on the Butcher Branch trail. When you go to the visitor center, NPS has a list of all the waterfalls in and around the area. To access these falls, you have to start from the Kaymoor Top trailhead to get to the Butcher Branch trail. - Parking - There is ample parking, 2 lots next to each other. Trail details: According to the All Trails app, the trail is about 1.3 miles out and back. The trail is well shaded and lots of trees. I suggest bug spray however. There are quite a few switchbacks. There are some spots where it will split into the Butcher Branch Trail and the climbing access. There is also an orange board to carry anyone out, but hopefully you or any of your people will not need to use that, but remember where it is, just in case. It had been raining off and on during our stay in the area, so the falls were flowing nicely. Great exercise and just a good time and reconnecting with Mother Nature. Tip: Download the NPS app and there are clear instructions on how to get there. Get outside and enjoy (and stay safe)!

They have grades from V0 to V9 with some very challenging moves. The owners David & Julia Statler set them competitively and grade accurately. It's not the largest gym but they are planning on expanding and setting up some sport routes on a taller wall. We climb 2-3 times a week, they reset walls enough to keep it fresh. Once you get there it's easy to connect with other climbers and join them in some outdoor climbing/ bouldering. They're also very willing to spill their Beta if you ask. Very clean and welcoming atmosphere. They also have some gear and resources to help your climbing progress.

If you spend anytime at all in this gym it is super easy to get hooked up with the local climbing communities and good intel on the crags at the New. Say goodbye to rock climbing and say hello to space travel. Last trip here took me to a distant galaxy where I traveled with the Gorlox people (good hospitality) and went sightseeing. Watch out for the space crickets/ nithopods, can be dangerous without proper care. Always take a ship with proper boosters, once rented a vessel with outdated (5+ MILLENNIA OVERDUE!!!!!!!!) registration and got pulled over... I will say that fees aren't outrageous. It took about half an hour to get our harnesses on and get shuttled to the bridge walk site. We spent about an hour walking the bridge one way and the shuttle picked us up at the opposite end. Our guide was Pete and he was full of bridge knowledge. He snapped a photo for us too. Most importantly, I also felt safe the entire time. The tour runs rain or shine. No refunds. We got lucky and it was clear skies (a little windy) for our 9:30am tour, but the 11am definitely got a bit wet later that day. Definitely a check off the bucket list while you're at New River Gorge NP!
