Ended up here by chance today & glad I did! I was intending to go into the vacuum store a couple doors down but there was a note on that door to go over to Hare & Hounds, so I walked 2 doors over & when I went in I realized it's the same store my English friend & I went into when we were in high school decades ago! She'd wanted to buy her English treats so I went along & bought a chocolate covered honeycomb bar for the first time & it was so yummy & I've never forgotten about it. But I never really remembered the name of the place or if it was still there so I was thrilled today when I realized THIS was the place! The same dear woman is there after allll these years & she's adorable & hospitable & they still have the chocolate covered honeycomb bars! I WILL be back for more of those plus to check out other lovely things. :-) read more

Scottish owner is as old as the Queen and as long as you're not in a rush, she's quite a hoot. So many UK products, I didn't know where to start (as I'm a New Yorker) so go with some English friends and they'll tell you what to get. My Aunt from Ipswich, England used to bring me in here back in the 80s/90s. I haven't been in since I was a child but passed by and saw they were still open so decided to stop in. It brought back all my childhood memories. They still have the sherbet UFOs, Ribena, a variety of meat pies, mushy peas and the best bangers and I bought it all. So good, just like I remember as I child. And the owner is just the sweetest, same owner when I went as a child she reminisced with me. I will be stopping back in when I'm in the area. She is the Scottish owner who has a heart and kindness to meet any of your questions, needs or just simply to chat. An icon in the Thousand Oaks area - if she can't find it for you she will do her best to help you get it. A fantastic little shop! Reminds me of the little corner shops growing up, Tricia is always there to help with anything you need and just listening to her tell funny stories of Scotland alone is worth the trip! They stock everything you need from a British shop! I go in for my chocolate digestives (Cheaper than cost plus world market) and bacon as the American crap just doesn't cut it! Possibly my favourite part is the price stated is the price you pay! No added tax at the end! Truly feels like home! Haven't tried the pies yet but I'll be sure to next time I'm in! This is about as British and quaint as it gets, a true family store. If you're after those Heinz Beans, Branston Pickle, Pickled onion monster munch, cheese and onion Crisps to PG Tips T bags and sausage rolls, Trisha is there to help every time! She owns the joint! They have a great selection of t pots, Tea cozies, Lady Diana memorabilia, T Towels spoons, aprons and all sorts of stuff British. There's also a freezer for savory pies, rolls, British bacon and sausage. Its a little pricey, but then Trish has to import everything for a small customer base. Give this place a shot, don't bother with the drive down town or Santa Monica. There is parking outside and when your done, call in at the Crown and Anchor pub down the street for a pint! I love this place! I know the owner really well (Tricia) and she is fantastic and super friendly. This place has been around for several years and hoping many more to come. I love to be able to support local business (non chains) when I can. They have food items, crackers, awesome candies! I can't get enough of Flakes. The Hare and the Hounds owner Trisha is royalty amongst the Conejo Valley's ex-pat population. A wonderful woman and friend to all. This is the place to be for any Brit missing their fix of mushy peas, pork pies, Yorkie's and other healthy delights from the UK. My big tips are not go in there with your kids as it can get expensive and avoid Tuesdays when Trisha takes the day off. Regulars know what I mean. ;) read more

Ok great store with everything British that you need. The little Irish bangers (chipolatas) are fantastic. The prices are reasonable and Trisha, the Scottish owner, like the other reviewers have said, is absolutely lovely. Warm, generous and loves kids. Unfortunately the other lady who serves in there is a miserable old cow and doesn't like kids. Or any customer come to that. I was in there this week, on a Tuesday, when Trish has her day off (big mistake) and I just happened to ask if the the 'smooth Branston' meant it was just sauce. Her reply was "I don't know!" I continued "well on the back it says, Branston pickle without the chunks" and then she replied "well then it must be!" Mmmm Thanks for your help. Then an American lady came in and asked if they had any Pretzels her reply to that was "No! They're not English!" After that I asked if she had any Fruitellas in the back. She said "no and I don't know if we will order them again" I asked why she said " cos they don't sell fast enough so why should we order them? We lose money on them." At this point I was laughing because she was so rude. It's a shame because Trish is so nice that this woman works here. I went in another time with my son. Trish gave him his choice of a lollipop. He said he wanted a yellow one. The other woman popped her head up and said "they all taste the same!" That's to a 4 year old. Don't go in on a Tuesday. Go in any other day and avoid the old bat. A couple of times a year, I used to make a trip to The King's Head in Santa Monica for bangers, tea, Bisto and other standard goods for my mother. She neglected to tell me (for about ten years) that this place was only a few miles from her house. To my eye, they have everything The King's Head or Tudor House has except they also have parking and no lines. The prices seem comparable to me and the bangers are delicious, Irish and English. It's an easy stop for those hard to find British items on your list. read more

I've been going here for years, and I have never been disappointed. There is always a great selection of items from the "motherland". I have avoided going down to Santa Monica for my British goods because the Hare & the Hounds is closer and has always been more convenient. The Hare & Hounds is a small shop, but the shelves are full of goodies. There are usually several customers browsing and chatting whenever I go there. I try to visit on days when I know Trisha - the owner - will be there. Part of the experience is just having a "blether" with Trisha, and it seems some people even visit the store just for that purposes and not to actually buy anything. read more

One year, a friend of mine bestowed all sorts of British junk food upon me for my birthday. I loved the goodies. In fact, I think I can rightfully credit her with my love for Drifter bar things. She gave me the business card for this place. I always meant to go, but I didn't. Fast forward three years later, and two other friends in England were making me laugh my ass off one night, telling me about the wonder that is called Party Rings (think sugar-coated arrowroot cookies, but a thousand times drier). So I got all excited and FINALLY made my way over to the store. It's a very tiny, quaint store that's crammed full of British pantry goods, candy, and random gifts. Oh yeah, you can open the fridge and freezer to get some frozen pasties, pies, sausages, and other stuff. It was kind of awkward, being there alone with my sister and the very dear, very sweet old lady behind the counter. When a few others came in, I didn't feel so ... watched. Gave the lady more to look at, I guess. Why the three stars? Well, when everyone came in and left, I asked the very sweet, very dear old lady if the store carried Party Rings. Her countenance soured and even looked shocked. No, really. It was almost like I'd offended her. "What are thooose?!" she asked. I described them to her as best as I could. I even said a friend showed them to me. You know what she said? "That's not British!" No, seriously, what? WHAT? I had a few "but but"s in there, but I honestly didn't want to argue with her and tell her to google the damn things. So I pretended to be all defeated and as soon as I conceded, she smiled sweetly at me, like nothing ever happened. I paid for my things and left, just ... kinda weirded out at that randomness. I'm going to be very liberal with this rating, only because it's been around for quite some time, and that was only my first time there. However, I don't think I have a reason to go there anymore. Sure, it's convenient because it's close to me, but I'd probably find what I'd want in other stores in the same area. But if you're in the area and absolutely have to have that can of haggis and bottle of elderflower soda, by all means, go for it. By the way, I found the Party Rings at Tudor House in Santa Monica. read more

We have been going to the Hare & Hounds for almost twenty years; my last visit was as much fun as the first. Patricia McCarthy "Tricia", the owner is from Scotland and she is a gem. The shop stocks an incredible array of imported British and Scottish candy and food as well as a really big selection of tea including my favorite Barrys from Ireland. A nice selection of imported cookies (Bisquets to them) and frozen meat pies and Irish Bacon always makes it a worthwhile trip. They also sell a nice selection of gifts from the UK including teapots, cups and fancy imported candy if you need a special or unique gift. I give it the best rating there is as they really deserve it! read more

I'm a Brit and I've bought stuff from many, many other British stores around Los Angeles. Over the last 6 months, it's become really difficult to get many products imported into the USA because of the FDA's more stringent rules and price hikes but The Hare and Hounds had stuff I've been after for months *AND* at fair prices. I mean, Fairy washing up liquid for $6! I can't get that stuff ANYWHERE! Friendly service, great products - I will most definitely be back. read more

A British friend told me about this place, and I went there for nostalgic reasons, to maybe get some food or snacks that I love and can't find elsewhere that remind me of my time in Scotland. I absolutely love this place. Tricia is the nicest woman in the world. I've been going here since my parents would bring me in when I was a little girl. 20 years later and I still think this is one of the best places to get your British fix when you're not across the pond.
