We were in the neighborhood today and stopped to check it out. It's a good sized full supermarket with a very large produce department. We spot checked the pricing on a few fruits and vegetables and found them to be excellent! The quality was excellent too- we picked up a few avocados, a few tangelos and a bunch of scallions. We had just bought a few zucchini at Stop and Shop the other day, and the price here was significantly lower. read more

Harkens Market is close to a 45 min. drive from our home, yet we regularly shop there for fresh veggies as often as we can justify the trip. Since our family goes through lots of potatoes, we are hooked on their 50 lb. bags, and rarely purchase regular spuds anywhere else. Of course the Fall is prime time to purchase their regional offerings, but those coming from North of the border serve our needs just as well this time of year (Feb). Our shopping list usually includes a lg. bag of onions, their fresh jumbo eggs, seasonal veggies, and strangely enough, their (Dole) celery always seems inexplicably better than the rest! Having been going there for a number of years, we have developed other favorites too, so highly recommend other smart shoppers to give them a try. One of the interesting things about Connecticut is that there are a number of farms and local growers, but not so many good places to get fresh local produce and meat. Harken's is one of the few places in the area, and they do a great job. Harken's is a combination garden center and food market. My review will focus on the food market, although my wife really likes the garden center. The food market is larger than it looks from the outside, and is split into two sections. On the left is a butcher that has just about all of the popular options of meat (chicken, sausage, steaks, pork, etc.). The meat is fresh and affordable. I've purchased steaks, burgers, breakfast sausage, and homemade chorizo from the store, and all of it cooked up very well. there are even some pre-made food options (marinated meats, etc.). They even do "snack sticks," essentially a fresh home-made version of Slim Jims. Who wouldn't want something called a "snack stick?" On the right side is the produce section. Again, the name of the game is freshness; the produce looks like it was picked and brought right to the market. You can get anything from salad components (lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers) to spices (cilantro) to more unique produce (yucca, for example). The prices of the produce are great as well, at least on par with local grocery stores. Overall I'm a big fan, and I just wish there were more comparable markets in the area. read more

When I lived in the area, I would visit and shop here weekly. After taking a look around, you would be hard pressed to find somewhere else that provides the level of selection and service Harken's is known for. On a recent visit, I was happy to find Harken's serving up a great variety of fresh produce. The basics like butternut squash, yellow/green zucchinis, green beans, and broccoli were all cheaper than the supermarket. The same goes for my essentials like onion, garlic, cilantro, and ginger. They also carry produce you normally would find in an Asian grocery store like plantains, coconuts, and different pumpkins and gourds like chayotes and bitter melon. I try to eat a well-balanced diet, so it's nice to have a wide range to choose from. Veggies aside, heaps of nuts in canvas bags line the aisles. Mixed nuts in shell by the pound: almonds, brazil nuts, pecans, walnuts, peanuts, pistachios; it's great. A considerable amount of local fresh and dried fruits are also available. The butchery adjacent to the market is cool. Custom smoking, sausage making, home-made sauces, and an available deli are just some of the services they provide. That aside Harken's also sells beer & alcohol, pet food, and everything in between! Harken's is also very well known for being the area's one-stop source for contractors and homeowners. Whether you are in the market to build a new patio or looking for help on re-purposing a garden bed, Harken's Landscape Supply has a friendly and knowledgeable staff that is more than happy to help out. Hundreds of hardscape products, fully stocked nursery, and beautiful displays are only but a few of the services Harken's offers. I can't count the times I have relied on Harken's for bulk mulch and soil, and their large array of stonework. Long awaited review for this place. Have been shopping here from a while n am totally into their veggies. Few months ago a friend of mine mentioned about Harken's. She told me that they had a huge quantity of different veggies priced very low. Being totally vegetarian, I search for a bargain market so that I can pick up huge quantity for the same price. They have a market in the front and all other garden supplies behind it. They harvest the veggies almost everyday and you get fresh veggies every morning. A day or older produce is placed outside for really cheap. They also sell meat and poultry. I love this place, a great value for money! read more

My new go to farmers market. They have it all. Very fresh local produce. Prices are much lower than Highland Park Markets. The staff is friendly and the check out is efficient. Next door is a butcher shop too. They also have a mini grocery store and a huge beer selection. Plenty of parking. read more

From the street this place looks like a sprawling compound, but inside the market, it's less than impressive. I was hoping for a deli, sandwiches, pre-made foods to take home, baked items, and found nothing of the sort. Very small meat section with nothing catching my eye. No local items, except for some produce that was specifically marked local without listing which farm it came from. Some of the produce did look pretty decent, and they do carry beer, but it's nothing worth stopping back in again, especially the market part. The landscaping aspect is very extensive, with a huge selection of landscaping stone, bricks, blocks, and pavers. Biggest I've ever seen. Some rare and hard to find trees and bushes. The prices inside the store and out seemed very high. I've stopped in twice, and left empty handed. I find this place highly overrated. read more

This is one of the best places to get fresh fruits n veggies in Windsor. The moment you get out of the car, the freshness lingers in the air. Lots of flowers, herbs, fruits n vegetable plants are available for low prices to add variety to our garden. Being an indian, onions and tomatoes form a large chunk of the meals I cook. Have not found any other place around here to get quality veggies for this low price. The last time i purchased a 10 lb onion bag, I found some of them to be a little rotten. I have been coming here with my Popie since I was a little one. Now living in Broad Brook as an adult, this is my weekly stop for checking out what they have to offer in delicious fruit and veg! I will often try something new as well. Staff is so nice as well and you leave with lots of produce for little money. I am always shocked when I hear the low total! Also, sidenote, the butcher connected is fantastic as well. A little higher priced than the grocery store, but I consider it worth it to support local.
