Nice medium size grocery store. I didn't know it at the time of our visit, but this location has been in business since 1886. What!? For realz. Check out their website. Produce is the first section you see upon entering and it is nicely laid out. A bakery is next and across the way is nuts, beer and a few refrigerated good. The entire back wall is devoted to deli, meats, prepared foods and the like. There is a lot of staff back there. We had been on the road for quite a while and I needed the assistance of a restroom but could not find one, so I asked. Just in case you too need such help, it's in the back. Pass through the metal double doors by the meat counter and follow the yellow arrows on the floor. Seriously, it was kind of fun being in the back where 'only employees' are supposed to be. The shelves are very well stocked. I needed mirin (sweet saki), they had it, and ramen noodles, which they also had, and not the kind you eat in college, a higher quality version for which I am very grateful. Meat and seafood are top notch. Service is also great. Produce leaves a lot to be desired, especially since its more expensive than any of the other grocery stores in town. plenty of delicious prepared foods you can bring home or microwave there. This is a great local market with an amazing deli and an excellent meat counter. Service is great, and the registers are well staffed. They bring bags to your car if needed, and don't rush older customers who might be slow. I have never found an employee who was not helpful. Prices are generally higher than bigger stores, but there are store brand (for the oops I forgot to buy tomato sauce) and sales. I love having this store so close to me! read more

The meat selection is the mandime of Highland Park -- it's as close as you'll get to a butcher shop without the chance of catching a glimpse of what lurks behind closed doors. HP has no less than 6 different types of pre-marinated chicken, no less than 7 different kinds of burgers, and a handful of different kinds of sausages - among many, many other meaty things. Drool over every cut of steak imaginable, procure pounds of the pinkest swordfish I've ever had, and inhale buckets of fancy-restaurant caliber shrimp. Grab a slice (or a pie) of their freshly made pizza, or get some sushi from the guy that is physically making sushi behind a little counter near the front of the store. Dance down to the other end of the store and get some real, organic, local cold cuts, and the best potato and egg salad I've ever had. Just about everything is locally sourced and made in house. Also, they have Cooper cheese. NOBODY has Cooper cheese anymore. If you haven't ever had it, please obtain it immediately. That said, the rest of the aisles are pretty standard, you can find just about anything there in Stop & Shop for a little less -- I wouldn't go here for your big time Superbowl of grocery shopping, the price differences on things (cereal, milk, yogurt, etc etc) add up after a while. Sometimes it's nice to see a small grocery store doing things the futuristic old-fashioned way. This holds true at checkout, where you will see no belt to load your consumables, the cashier takes it out of your (very interestingly designed) shopping cart (8 inches deep, millions of inches long) so you can skip that boring step of revisiting everything you put in your cart over the last 20 minutes. Ohhhhh PAPER BAGS with HANDLES! Finally, I can purchase 12 items and they can all go in one very nicely sized (Whole Foods style) paper bag rather than 10 flimsy Stop & Shop plastic bags. The bagger even offers to carry everything out for you. What a nice touch! Alas, I'd rather walk out of there with my arms bulging and muscles burning, balancing a gallon of milk on my nose than accept help with my groceries...so that particular perk is of no use to me. :O) Moral of the story: Head here for meat & deli items...and there will probably be a line. read more

I am a lifelong fan of HP Market, but the grinder I ordered the other day went in the trash can. I ordered a Junior grinder that ended up on paninni bread. The person I ordered from forgot some items, so that when I returned to pick it up, it wasn't ready. When I got home, there were tomatoes on the sandwich (never requested tomatoes...I am allergic. ) Not a grinder roll and the panning had a strange flavour. My wife and I have been going there for 14 years now and continue to enjoy the fine food and pleasant staff, many of which we know on a first name basis. Highest quality grocery market around with the best service. Whenever I go to highland park I never have to wait in line not because it's not busy, but because there are the right amount of people working and they are efficient. Every employee I have encountered has also been very friendly. The meats are expensive but the freshest you can get. We like the marinated steak tips and skewers to grill. The different kinds of burgers and sausage are another favorite. I also enjoy their bakery- good pies and cannolis! Not a fan of the apple cider donuts though. read more

I have been shopping at Highland Park Market for many years, most often at this one, which is their original location, and also at their Coventry location, with occasional forays into the Glastonbury store. The Manchester location is the largest of the three as far as I can tell, and the one with the greatest selection, though all are very good. Their grocery prices tend to be higher than the giant stores, but they have a diverse selection for their size, and they also carry a good selection locally sourced and higher-end brands. Where HPM really shines is in their bakery, deli and meat departments. Each department is staffed by friendly, helpful, knowledgeable employees who offer fresh product and old-fashioned service. The bakery carries a large array of store-made and locally sourced items such as cakes, pies, rolls and bagels, that, in my opinion, are better than the big stores. Rolls, for example, are baked fresh in small batches throughout the day, so you may get lucky and get a warm batch. The deli carries a diverse selection of meats and cheeses, including products you don't tend to find elsewhere such as Lebanon bologna, and also store-cooked items, and they have a nice selection of store-made salads and prepared dishes. They sell a nice selection of prepared foods such as deli sandwiches, fresh-made pizza and takeout-style refrigerated entrees. In the the butcher section you will find a selection that is unmatched in the area for freshness, diversity and quality. Store-made items such as sausages and marinated meats vie for your attention alongside high quality, freshly cut beef, chicken and even lamb and veal, and the butchers will make custom cuts if you don't find what you want in the display. Go to the big places for plastic-wrapped, diapered hunks of meat of unknown origin and age, or pay a little more at HPM for freshly cut, high-quality meat, wrapped just for you by an employee you can talk to, the old fashioned way. The produce selection is diverse, and well curated by attentive, helpful employees. They carry many locally sourced items in season. The store has a lot of merchandise efficiently shoehorned into a small space, and their shopping carts are unique in my experience, tall and foreshortened to facilitate navigating in tight confines and also fit into their checkout counters. Another distinguishing feature of HPM presents itself as you check out and prepare to leave. All lanes are staffed by real humans, many of whom seem to be local students, and the store always has enough lanes open to meet the demand. No waiting forever at the two lanes with humans or being shunted off to the cold embrace of computerized checkout devices. Your groceries will be bagged for you, in paper bags with handles, and, if you wish, carried right to your car by a friendly employee who will not accept a tip for the service. In a time when so many products are dispensed to us by a small number of giant companies eager to replace quality products with cheapened simulacra, staff their stores with small numbers of low-wage employees, and supplant customer service with slogans, shopping at HPM is a refreshing experience. Local ownership, fresh, quality products and an actualized philosophy of customer service keep me going back, and I encourage you to give them a try. read more

The Highland brand of Pastrami is the best I have ever had. The Manchester store is the best one yet. The quality of fresh products is what I like the best. They make one of the best chicken salads around. The staff is super courteous and always upbeat. Even though this location is out of my way, it is worth the weekend drive. read more

I had to pay for a portion of my order with quarters because that was all I had. There were 3 employees standing there watching me like I was an Alien from another planet. But the manager just stood there shaking his head at me. He was being a bully. Plain and simple. He certainly let me know he wasn't happy that I held up his line for an extra minute. Okay, first off I'm not going to really bother spending a whole lot of time talking about the actual market. Basically the market is a small and upscale supermarket, it has a limited selection but generally everything you are looking for. It tends to have the nicer brands of things and there's also a PortONE movie rental kiosk (it's like red box). I did want to talk about the prepared food. Highland Park Market does a surprisingly good job at preparing different foods. For a super market, they make great pizza. They also package and sell up various things from chickens, to salads, to party platters. Highland also does an excellent job with deli sandwiches. In general Highland's deli section is pretty great, but beyond that they do a great job at putting together grinders. They usually put a ton of meat in there and have a great array options. read more

We will NOT be shopping here any more....they are OBVIOUSLY experiencing some real financial trouble which is such a shame, because this WAS my FAVE market, especially for some specialty items.... but the last couple of times we have gone here, we have purchased things only to get them home and discover they were past their sell by dates (yes, we usually check before, but this was a place we THOUGHT we could trust). The last time was last Monday, and we thought the shelves looked like there had had been some huge run on items, as if there had been a big storm...or i thought maybe they get all their deliveries on Tuesday....but alas, it looked the same on Wednesday when hubby brought back the two items that were past due. AND one of the items we bought that was a frozen thing, when opened later in week, it was obvious by the horrid freezer burn, that the item had been there for a very long time. This is very disappointing, and i have been a huge fan of this store ever since i started coming to CT to see my in laws, long before we moved here..... I am sad to say, we will not be going back. We cannot waste our limited time and resources shopping at a store that sells stale, moldy or freezer burned past due items. **** btw, I am referring to the store by the Buckland Mall area...I think it might be considered So Windsor, and not Manchester....but that was the newest store...and if they are letting that one be this bad, than I am thinking all of them cannot be very reliable..... read more

JPB and I stopped in here to get some grub from the deli. I have no clue what the rest of the store is like, but their deli rocks. I got a spinach and goat cheese salad with candied pecans and raspberries. They didn't skimp on ANYTHING. It was a great salad! I also got some roasted potatoes, and they were divine. There were tons of great choices: salads, pasta, sides, meats, all sorts of yummy looking food, ready to go. I had a hard time deciding and I was starving. This is the best grocery store period. They manage to have EVERYTHING you would ever need in an easy to navigate, quick in and out experience. All staff are helpful and go way beyond to ensure my satisfaction. Just this morning I was looking for a produce item and they told me they would bring it in from one of their other stores and hold it for me. Even offered to drop it at my house. Amazing!! Highland Park Market caters events!!! They catered our son's wedding for 50 people in Tolland; first they were very accommodating for our venue, date and time. There are a lot of weddings in June! Second they instructed us on the best set up to receive the food. Third they delivered hot food on time! We just popped the trays in the chafing frames. Everything was delicious, perfectly prepared. Perfect amounts-no one left hungry and very little left over. Everyone raved about the food: Shepherds Pie, Potato Encrusted Cod, Cheese Tortellini with pesto, Chicken Parmesan and more. They even threw in a pan of Eggplant Parmesan and an extra salad, no charge! We will definitely only use Highland Park Market for our next gathering! Wonderful job! Gets the job done... I've only come here a few times to grab quick groceries or go to the ATM, but from what I've experienced, this is a standard supermarket with pretty good availability of items and a nice ready-to-eat section with salads and sushi. The prices seem a bit high compared to the huge chain markets, but it's really close to my companion's house, so it's our go to when we're at his place. read more
